How do I tell the difference between the Mission 751 and the 751 Freedom? How do I tell the difference visually and what is the difference in sound?

Horses for courses really.

Some prefer original 751 for the ''edge'' and others for more ''softness'' with the freedom version.

The original is front ported and uses a metal tweeter (I think)

Both great classics!!

The Freedom version is said to sound a bit woolly with the silk tweeter, compared to the original using a metal one.

Beware of dried up ferro-fluid on the original 751, I've had three pairs & all had gunked up resulting in severely reduced output / power handling. In some cases they can be disassembled & cleaned but one pair I had were so far gone removing the diaphragm was impossible without damaging the voice coil.

The original tweeter in the 751 and 753 was a waspy, tinny thing and not at all 'accurate' as it 'zinged' along with any music played through it. If anything, the fabric dome was too much the other way, showing the lossy and slightly soggy sounding polypropylene cone up for what it is (apparently, ALL polyprop cones do this and are not at all rigid, being very easily deformed from their 'cone' shape).

Beware of dried up ferro-fluid on the original 751.

I'd avoid any speaker using ferrofluid. Nasty stuff, just used as a cheap way of bumping up tweeter power handling and damping poor coil/diaphragm assemblies. It will dry up and leave you with a duff speaker.

I see the new ATC tweeter (their inhouse built one) does not use it.

Don't tell André that. Castle used to use it.
