best resistor type for cartridge loading

I need to change the loading on my phonostage and want to know which resistors are best for the job

The most neutral? Probably Z foils. I get mine here. http://www.texascomponents.com/store/viewItem.asp?idProduct=461 They also make them for Vishay, as I understand it.

If the resistor is loading a low-output cartridge then noise can be an issue. There's a paper here on the subject http://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1278251. What you have to remember, of course, if that these folks have foil resistors to sell, so unsurprisingly they concentrate on the very good job that's been done of making low noise foil resistors. But they are scientists at heart I think, so they do point out that for the ultimate noise performance wirewounds may be quieter. They make the very valid point that the inductance of wirewounds can be a problem. What they don't mention is that you can get non-inductive wirewounds (and that they even make them http://www.vishay.com/docs/30204/rsns.pdf !). I used some when I re-housed a pair of SUTs recently and as far as I could tell they were silent.

Sorry to be a total wet blanket, but what is used in most manufacturers' phono stages? Usually 1% metal film I believe, and these are many orders of magnitude quieter than any vinyl record, even a mint spotless one...

Mind you, the hobbyist has different priorities and if these Vishay ones really do the bizz, then why not if they're affordable :)

The answer here depends largely on how much the OP is willing to spend. My recommendation for a nice sounding and good budget choice would be Takman carbon film, but push the budget and Audio Note non-magnetic tantalum resistors would quite possibly be the best available at pretty much any price.

what value are you looking for?

Low values for speaker crossovers. Anything from 1R5 to 22R at the moment. Changing from Jantzen MOX to Mills wirewound was audible, so I am interested in experimenting.

Hi, thanks for all the reply's chaps, to answer a few questions , budget any as long as they are worth it, value required I need to change the loading from the current 150R
to 600R so either a 470R in series or a 600R and replace the existing. The current resistor looks very much like the Jantzen wirewounds but hifi collective don't have any values
anywhere near what I want in the Jantzen's , I presume any power rating will be ok for cart loading ,and by the way yes it is for a low output MC.

Yes, so have I. I've tried a number of resistor makes for loading and found the Z foils to be better than the rest.

Yes all from HIFI Collective, not cheap mind, but the wife says I'm worth it :D

If you buy Z foils direct from Texas Components they will make you any value you want at any tolerance you want. I don't bother with anything better than 1%. And it may actually work out cheaper than HiFi Collective.

Richard, thanks, thats a really cool tip! I'd go for the lowerst tolerance possible. I think the components in my paradise have been matched to <1.0% tolerance.

I have a load of Vishay Bulk Metal Film resistors i bought in the 90's to rebuild my 'A60' but never got around to it these were well expensive back then, i dont think they are available anymore. 'VSR' or summert like that.

I use 560R Schinkohs in my switchless hagerman Piccolo. None too sure about their true values mind. Will check them when I replace the PCB. It got a bit scorched during the nth de/resolder process.

I very nearly did a while back! There will prolly be a whole raft of updates to the paradise before I drag myself around to buying them ;)
