Nikon SD card assistance

Hi all, a camera/technology numpty needs your help please.

In an effort to improve the quality of the pics I post here and E-Bay etc, I have dragged out my Nikon D90 camera. I put this into moth balls when I found out that all I could do with it was snaps of the kids. I am hopeless with technology.

Anyway, my question is - are there any problems with me using two SD cards and swopping them around ? I want to keep one with family pics on and the other for Hi-Fi pics. Is there anything I need to be aware of ?

Also, what is formatting for ?

You can use as many SD cards as you like. Formatting erases existing data from the device and prepares it for new data to be stored.

If you're going to use your Nikon for Hi-Fi photos you may find the 'Macro' facility useful for close shots (normally indicated with a flower symbol). The flash may be too intense for close shots though. I sometimes diffuse it with a bit of tissue kept over the flash with BluTak. (that can upset exposures on some cameras though).

good camera. and as geoff says you just pop one card out and put another in. always good idea to separate your pics like that. the use of a decent program to adjust them is advisable as well. i find zoner a good easy to use program. as long as u dont go for the latest version it is not expensive either. you can also directly upload them to zonerama to keep them safe and for viewing either on pc or by using their app an androud type device like tablet or phone. you get pretty high quality pics

I don't rely on SD cards to keep large picture files intact. I have had a few issues over the years if I left the pictures too long in there. So always back the up.

I worked for a few years in an Asda Photo Centre and in that time, the only cards we constantly had trouble with were SD cards. My advice would be to shoot your images and get them on to your computer as quickly as possible. With huge capacity cards these days if it corrupts you lose everything. Once again, my advice would be to use smaller cards but more of them, that way, you don't lose the lot.
