View Full Version : SENNHEISER HD600/650 upgrade cable
Hi,
Just wanted to let members know about an excellent cable I've just had made up for my HD600's. If the mod's could please note this post is purely for fellow members information ..... I have no connection or vested interest in this guys products and I've not been asked by him to post this..... so I hope this is ok.
Anyway, was looking for an upgrade to the rather useless Sennheiser stock cable and came across a guy on ebay offering a Sommer cable upgrade.... he goes by the name of Redbandmusic. I got in touch with him, a nice guy called Mike, and exchanged a few messages regarding different options he could offer. We agreed on a 4.75m Van Damme star quad cable using Cardas earpiece connectors and a Cardas 6.3mm Jack for just £40.
Received the cable in less than a week and it is top quality, very well made and sounding great from the off...... now after 3 weeks burn in, it sounds immense.
I can highly recommend this guy, he's very helpful, happy to discuss your particular requirements and he'll custom make any kind of cable of whatever quality you want, at a very reasonable price. I'll use him again most definitely.
Just thought I'd share this with you all.
Steve
This is his link to his ebay ... he doesn't seem to have anything listed at the moment but he's probably just redoing his listings
http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/redbandmusic ....... his name is Michael Weipert and his email is basstubes@gmail.com

Thanks.
I couldn't find him, and wanted to have a look to see what he was offering.
I guess I'll wait a bit. ;)

I'm sure he'll be back up soon, I was looking at some Klotz cables he was offering, only a couple of days ago. He had about 20 items posted then .... he sells a lot of recon headphones as well, though mostly Skullcandy, Beats and the likes.

Steve, how did this cable compare to the stock one?
I'm tempted by a new cable, would be interested to see how much more can be eeked out of the 600's. I'm also using a Lehmann Linear.
Cheers,
Bill

Just to double check it wasn't just an 'over exuberance/new purchase' scenario, I've just spent the last hour swapping them about. The listening results were the same as I previously concluded.
That is....... 'out the box' the improvement over the stock cable is immediately apparent with a fuller sound .... after two or three weeks burn in though, that improvement becomes quite considerable, the detail seems to have 'tidied itself up' and an occasional top end brittleness I was getting with the stock cable, has gone. I'm hoping you understand what I mean by that Bill, using the same combo as me.
Or to put it simpler, I upgraded from a Graham Slee Nova to the Lehmann BCL followed by the cable upgrade. The cable upgrade seemed to make a bigger difference to SQ than the HPA upgrade.
Mike seems to have gone awol on ebay this weekend but if you email the address I posted previously, he's quick to get back to you.

Steve, thanks for your reply, emailed Mike yesterday, but not heard back as yet.
Cheers,
Bill
I have e-mailed Michael today, and he responded within an hour.
Very helpful chap. Seems to be recommending me the Klotz TP414 or the Sommer Onyx, fitted with Cardas plugs. I don't think I could buy all the bits cheaper than the fully made price.
I have ordered a 4m Klotz TP414 cable fitted with Cardas plugs at both ends for a total cost of £32.90.
Seems like a bargain to me.

I ordered a 3mtr Van Damme cable with Cardas connectors an Neutrik
1/4" jack.

I went for the same in the end, but with a Neutrik jack, as Michael was out of the Cardas one. Has yours arrived yet?
Not yet.
It was supposed to be posted yesterday, but being in France it can take a few extra days to get here.

The cable arrived this morning. I've not had a chance to listen yet, but it certainly looks the part and appears extremely well made! The Klotz cable is a lot finer than I had imagined, a definite plus for me, as I don't like a heavy cable pulling on my ears.
Will give it a go in the morning when I have some time to myself, its all strictly and X Factor on a Sat evening in our house.
Mine should be here early next week. Hopefully....
Mine arrived today.
It looks well made, and it's a definite improvement on the standard Sennheiser cable.
I am happy with it. Thanks for the recommendation Steve.

Another tweak that's free and easy to try is to remove the foam pads - LINK (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mM2Cb0De1Y8).
Won't a lack of pads allow dust into the drive units?

It lets a bit more music out....I have been running without foams for a couple of years. Simple effective mod/easily reversible-well worth a try.
Has anyone tried HD700s? Just out of curiosity !!!!

My new cable has a few hours on it now and I have just whipped out the 'foam' from my HD600's, I also have a pair of HD800's on home demo for the weekend. When I had the 800's on home demo a few months back, they were streets ahead of the 600's, but now they are a lot closer, in fact very close!

I pulled the trigger on a pair of 700s, my logic being it should be an incremental step from the 650s. I have Emailed Michael to see if he does an upgrade cable for the 700s. All going well I should get a few hours over the next few weeks to make some impressions. My 650s took about 200 hours to settle down dare say the 700s will be similar.

I haven't been home for the bells for 22 years.....ho hum!!! Some new shiny cans and some JM will cheer me up no end---and maybe a couple of halfs!
I ordered and received after a week, 5m sommer /cardas replacement for my HD650's. Using a Capella. Sound appears to improve upon the basic HD650 cable.
Have only used for a few hours but will report again after a few weeks. Excellent service from Michael.
