Glass optical cables vary enormously in quality, and are not necessarily better than well-engineered plastic ones, so beware of hasty assumptions. The only glass cables that I would recommend are these http://www.lifatec.com/toslink2.html which are modestly priced. Their construction means that they are very light in weight and very flexible, which I find helpful.

A friend brought round his Wireworld Supernova 7 glass TOSLINK cable yesterday - I was astonished at how good it was - way better than any plastic-TOSLINK I have ever tried and it saw off my own co-ax digi cables, which amazed me to say the least. I had dismissed TOSLINK cables based on my own experience with plastic ones.

He said he'd tried some other glass ones with mixed results, as you say.

I'd just like to try a few. :)
