Been a while since I posted a system update.

So, this is what I sit in front of now, makes very pleasant sounds, doesn't eat much and is just about as simple as it gets.

Thanks for the stands Dave; made a big difference :)

I have a pair of Castle Acoustics 'Conways in a 2nd system but they are my much prefered Mk.1 version. Never liked the Mid range unit in the Mk.II or the poor fitting cast alloy Bass unit basket.

I had the units fully rebuilt at the factory before it closed.

I have all the 1970's Castle models cos im a big sad old fanboy

They're really nice old speakers.

I might even prefer them to my Ditton 44's though not 100% sure about that yet :/

Get some Mk1' you soon will :eyebrows:

Mk.I have hard wired X-Overs..

Idlewithnodrive
05-11-2014, 16:13
The crossovers have been recapped and the speakers re-wired on my MkII's, so they sound pretty good to these ears.

The Barbarian

I can't remember tbh but do the 'Mk.II have any resistors on the X-Over board. The MK.I do not?

Oooo  I'd love to have a play with that Sony amp.

Doge 6 CDP - interesting. I'd like a play with that, too!

Nice speakers.

I'd bin the tt, but that's just me.

Lovely system.

Has the Sony been checked over? It's a truly wonderful amp (5650 and 8650), but can fail spectacularly, taking speakers with it. Something to do with some dry joint diodes I understand. After forty years, a thorough check over is mandatory, as an old friend lost his and some lovely Harbeth HL5 bass units along with it that can't be repaired now.

Idlewithnodrive

Yep, the suicide Diodes and resistors have recently been replaced, so hopefully OK for a few more heart :)

Lovely looking system and simple too. Ticks all the boxes for me.

I have to agree that the stands would look better in a n other finish but given the system it's a very very small gripe. Sweet.

The TT is in excellent condition and is exactly what I was looking for; the timing and dynamics of my Dual combined with the smoothness, refinement and detail of my TD125, both of which it comprehensively blows into the weeds.

Very pleased indeed :)

Thanks Frank; I think you'd like the TT. The Carbon arm is lovely.

I think the oil filled mat makes quite a difference as well, it just sounds so natural.

Congrats Mike - welcome to the six-seven-fifty club. :)

Fabulous turntable - I'll never forget the moment we plugged my first one in just for a quick try-out at Scalford, the 3 others guys in the room all did the same 'blimey' look as me when we spun some tunes on it.

Just for a quick try-out the other day, I hooked up my Dad's Rega P3 (using the Benz cartridge) to compare with the Sony. The Rega just sounded like a toy by comparison (and I'm a Rega fan, it has to be said).

Hi drSM, the TT is a Sony PS-6750, the speakers were Castle Conway I I's BUT a year is a loooong time in hi-fi, so the system is now a Sony PS-6750 TT, Amps are Quad 34 / 405-2 and speakers are Castle Kendal II's.

I guess the title is a bit misleading now and should read Current dumpers, Direct drives and middling boxes :)
