This always winds me up.....
Is there anyway we can get this up to a nice round figure of 500 ??
How can we get this to be 500 ?
497 is just a boring number to me... and 500 is just a nice round figure....
Well if we were a soap on the telly we would have a plane crash or an explosion or a mass murder. Some thing really awful. That always gets the viewing figures up. Not sure how that would work on a hi-fi interweb site though...

Martin I have no idea how we can get to the magic 500.... but 497 just winds me up some how.... :mental:
It has been 497 for some time now. I'm trying not to lose any sleep over it, but, you know, it's difficult.
We could always start a new cable thread... :sofa: :D

Glad it's working out Dave. Next time I'll bring the 507 over. Then you'll be putting pennies in the money box for one of those. :)

There's only one way to achieve those sort of numbers, and that's a massive inter-forum war, with bannings, flouncings, threats of legal action and locked theads.

Looks like the Rega DAC is on Dave. Are you using the 206 through it?

But nothing like that was happening when the current record was established...

Nah it's always on Geoff as is the rest of my gear. Uh oh.... FIGHT!!!

I did have a Meridian 506 but I do believe my current Pioneer dvd/cd player through the Rega Dac is an improvement... the DV-717 was only about £45...
The 506 was very good though....

Rega DACs are OK, but a Meridian really comes to life with something like a Theta or (what I'm now using) a Monarchy Audio M22 series unit. I'm sure Wadia and Mark Levinson DACs would offer even more (at a price). Meridian players used as transports just seem to be as good as whatever DAC is used with them. The 506 18/20/24 are each excellent. I rather fancy getting a Meridian 500 Mk.II transport actually.

How much are the Monarchy M22's ?? I don't know anything about Monarchy...

Live and learn! :)
I have a couple of Monarchy Audio DACs (and power amps). I was using excellent Theta DACs, but the Monarchy Audio units just take things up a level (check out the reviews. On the amps too. Not a bad one anywhere (bit like ZYX cartridges) they are superb). The going price second hand seems to be £350 to £500 for a DAC. Don't rule out a Theta though, they sound great.
497 not interesting?
497 = the sum of five consecutive primes (89 + 97 + 101 + 103 + 107). Now that's interesting to a mathematician.

So do you think the Monarchy and the Theta dacs are better than the Rega Dac??
Which Theta dacs have you tried ?

I don't want to be rude about Rega DACs. I know they are popular here and they're good at the price. But to my ears even the tiny Theta Cobalt will outperform any Rega comfortably. Then you have the Chroma, a step up. Then the DSP series which are all great. In my view the Monarchy Audio DACs better even those.

Nothing that can be suggested publicly.

Many of them were eccentric and some even went mad with their discoveries: Gregor Cantor being one such. Cantor discovered mathematical entities (sets) that were bigger than infinity. That was bad enough, but the fact that the mathematical community of the day didn't take him seriously probably pushed him over the edge.

I actually like mathematics and have a great respect for the discipline. I'm sure great mathematicians like many geniuses can be borderline bonkers.
Maybe this thread can be stretched to 497 posts?
