dac for marantz cd 17 ki sig/pathos logos jamo concert 11

hi i have a marantz cd 17 ki sig player ,a pathos logos amp, and jamo concert 11 speakers . i have a behringer ultra curve 2496 dac/come sound shaper not fitted yet. im toying with buying a new dac and not using the behringer 2496 . looking at all second hand M1 ,rega dac or maybe a theta DS pro prime 11 dac or bel canto at about £200 to £300 mark, moneys tight as always the system needs to be turned up to approx half way the amp is 110 watts per channel so should be plenty of power on paper i t just seems to needs a kick up the pants thanks and regards john from sunny wales

Hi John,

You have a great volume control if it needs to be half way up for comfortable sound. Too many control laws cramp all the volume to 1/3rd of the control, with not a lot happening after this!

The CD17 wasn't a bad player in its day you know - a bit 'safe' sounding perhaps, but I remember back in 98 when I returned to KJW1 for a few months, the Theta machines and DACs were superb, with an effortlessly clear, uncoloured and involving sound. Now they're fairly affordable, I'd have a look to these and see how you get on :) Hopefully they'll give you more 'drama' in the presentation, which is what you're after I believe. It'll be natural drama that's supposed to be there, by the way, and not artifice!

OH YES EXACTLY more drama needed the cd 17 ki sig worked well with my quad esl57s and leak stereo 20 and croft pre amp SOLD IT DICK HEAD and also with jamo concert 8 and sonus faber musica the top end symbols rang like a bell YES YOU GUEST IT I PX ED THEM WALLY OR WHAT esl whent wife didnt like the size of them ,should have kept the speakers and got rid of the wife lol:scratch::doh:

Relax you are not the first enthusiast to make that mistake ;)

I can't really offer you any advice here, other than you have great amp and speakers so maybe a cd player with more 'pep'? Marantz house sound is very slightly syrupy, amp and speakers are now showing it up?

I have a M1 dac and it is excellent for the money. should get a good un for 200 ish. Nothing wrong with having the volume at midway; probably preferable tbh.
