Brother in law bought a new CD/Radio for his old BMW, cos the old one had a broken switch, but otherwise worked fine.
New one powers up and tunes in, but no sound.
Thinking he had a faulty unit he tried the one from his daughters car, which didn't work either. However, the new unit worked perfectly in her car.

He says the connections are the same for both new and old units.
He also says that he's wired speakers directly to the back of the new unit and still no sound.
The old unit was a cheap std item, the new one is a cheap std item.
Does this make any sense to anyone?

With their proprietary plugs and sockets I've opted to take my last 2 car stereo's down the road to a professional fitter. I know this is a cop-out but it's worth the saved hassle and trial and error.

That said, has your friend checked any/all the inline fuses. They'll be inline with the cables going from the car to the socket that goes into the head unit. Make sure the fuses are good, and the connections to them sound. Sometimes just opening and closing the fuse containers can solve a problem like this.

Can't be anything else...can it?

Well if the thing powers up ok, i'd assume no problem with fuses.

Just make sure there are none protecting the speakers.
