VLPS-1 Phono Stage

Well, for the last few years, I have been using a Musical Fidelity VLPS-1 phono stage as over the years, I have tried others but none significantly improved on the VLPS by a large margin. I used a Heed Questar; not much better, I used the original Firebottle; significantly worse and so I am still using my old faithful. A couple of days ago I thought I would try a VPSU-II power supply to see if it could make any difference. Well, it has. The background is now much darker and blacker than it ever has been and the whole sound is a lot drier. Not a huge upgrade but then it only cost me ninety five quid. So, until something comes along that is so much better for not a lot of money, I am happy to keep on using old faithful.

Excellent Shaun, you certainly get more satisfaction from good SPPV. (Sound per pound value for the uninitiated)

I did also try a Graham Slee Gram Amp 2 SE and this was amazingly better than all that I tried but of course it was significantly more expensive with the beefed up power supply. Maybe one day I shall be in a position to audition some amazing units with the intention of buying one but so far those I have tried have been disappointing. I might just go back to a Croft preamp with built in phono stage, who knows...? I have plenty of time to decide one way or the other.
