Had a hi-fi day out today.

Collected a Teac tuner, the last of the €12 bits. Unused in box :-) Also in box was a remote control that does the amp, tuner, CD player etc. Looked up the price and £63 new. It is new and unused.:)

Then on to see the woman that has bought my Teufel loudspeakers. Wired them up for her and almost regretted selling them once I heard them in her room. However the thick brown envelope was some consolation. First time I have met a 73 year old woman with more hi-fis than we have. Every room had a system and the whole lot was crammed with CDs. Bought home her Thorens to look at. It an electronic one so might need assistance. The arm lift doesn't go down, not sure if its a mechanical or electronic problem.

Got home and on the doorstep was a Quad 33/303. The guy whose B&Ws I am rebuilding left them as its an exchange jobby. Amp looks perfect - will get out some leads tomorrow and check. The pre looks a bit second hand around the case. Does anyone know the colour match?? Some sort of champagne but a colour number would be useful.

Bit knackered as it was a long drive but nothing like a few bargains and playing to make the day go with a swing.

Sort of. The B&Ws had been hit by lightning - not direct but I assume through the amp. Insides were fried. Tweeters exploded. Main driver voice coils melted, spiders burnt away. Half the crossovers blown. For some reason the sub bass units and coils survived. I've modified them to a true three way with the original bass, Kef B200 as mid range and Celestion HF1300 tweeter. The crossover is from a JBL pair that have been converted to 2 way!! They sound absolutely great. Sometimes accidents happen:lol: No science or knowledge involved, just suck it and see.

So he's getting some of my spare drivers and a good working pair of speakers in exchange for his Quads. I still suspect the value is on my side but he has to pay for all that experience and expertise after all:eyebrows:

I did post a pic of them before but here it is again. The front baffles are a hard plastic so I've front mounted the drivers. Bit strange having the mid bigger than the bass but it works. When the covers are on, you would never know they aren't standard - except for the fact they sound so much better of course:lol:

Made up some leads and tested the Quads this morning. The amp is absolutely fine, its playing away through the little Diamond 7 Pros and sounding good. The pre is a bit noisy on one channel but as it comes and goes with movement on the volume or balance controls, I reckon it probably just needs a clean. Are they sealed units or will a spray of cleaner do the job??

Took the lady's Thorens apart and the problem is that the drive belt on the arm lift is hugely stretched so the motor is spinning happily without turning the pulley. German eBay has come to the rescue and a set of belts - might as well do the main one too - is on the way. In the meantime, I'm testing it without the lift and find it totally underwhelming.

It's a TD126 Mk3 Electronic with a Shure V15. Very smooth but dull as ditchwater. Switched to my GUS special and the music comes to life. Rather surprised and pleased.

I remain unconvinced by floppy suspended TTs.
