Rega P3-24 upgrade

I have upgraded my P3-24 before with Michael Lims subplatter and dual pulley. Since that time I was using like that. After completing tube pre I decided to focus to analog side further.

- I want to change counterweight with tecnoweight, this is for sure and decided already. I am looking where İ shall find best price...
- I want to change the 3 feet not decided with what??? Open for recommendations !!!
- and finally I want to rewire the tonarm. .. İ looked through and found there are bulk wire and kits around. İ was thinking to buy 4 X33 AWG Phono cardas cable but İ am now confused.. open for recommendations!!!!

What would you recommend with this 3 items... Thanks in advance...

I would suggest you sell the P3-24 and put the money with the mods cost and buy an RP6. A proper upgrade.

Hi there,

For feet I can recommend the Cachafaz 2 adjustable feet from Tangospinner, Gus makes quaility gear for reasonable prices and these make leveling the TT really easy.

As for the counterweight and rewire you could consider an Audiomods Classic Tonearm. a phenomenal performer.
If not then the technoweight makes a huge difference.

One thought to consider. Rather than selling and getting an RP6 you could do the upgrades you want to and then buy an RP6 plinth later on to fit everything else to.
The RP3-24 and RP6 plinths are the same apart from the bracing on the RP6 and I can confirm that the bracing does make a difference.

It all depends where you want to go and how much are you willing to spend at one time. I got my P3/new in 2003. In the following years I had done every upgrade you could think of. But, I was just spending a little at a time, and the journey was very educational and fun at the same time. Now, I did the Cardas cable and I soldered on Rodium clips for my RB300 arm and used the Michell Technoweight with great success; and for feet I highly reccommend Herbies Iso-balls. Believe me I tried a lot of feet/balls, you name it.

Cardas seems reasonable for an update.

For feet İ will check herbies iso - ball. .
İ bought record Clamp from Argentinian guy, saw those feet, there was a bid, I quoted but something happened at the last second after 2 days silence. . Anyhow it made më little bit upset. Price he did not liked İ thought.

Could be an option but I am a DIY type of a guy... Like to play with components. At the very beginning it was the very main reason why I bought p3-24. Anyhow thanks for recommendation.

I know of people that have used them, but for better results they stuffed them with modelling clay - not for me. I went with a product that was a step-up from Herbies Tenderfeet. Before that was sorbothane, spikes/sorbothane, tennis/squash balls,sand, kittylitter, air bladders etc... Told ya I tried a LOT!

If you have silver IC's adding silver rewire for the arm could be a bit much. I took the copper route when I rewired my RB300 and it was a big improvement over the stock. I also chose the copper for my Audiomods arm as well. You cannot go wrong with the copper. And, it is cheaper!

At some topics around saw that to make cardas awg 33 wire to solder is PITA. As it is covered and solder is not effective to melt it and therefore we need to clean before (I did not understand how?) And then solder...
Is there a easy way for awg 33 wire to make ready for soldering...

Hi Yetkin. I am working out of town so I just checked in. When I soldered the Cardas wire I used a low watt pointy tip soldering iron. I am pretty sure / from memory, 25 watt. I used the iron to strip the wire jacket, then I blue tacked the clips on a support/a little box so it would not move. I then pre-soldered the clips, and blue tacked the wires so they are on the clips. Once you do this, it is pretty easy to solder these fine wires to the clips, lickety split. Now, this is done at the arm so make sure the platter does not move cause this is done on the plinth. Just do not forget to have the shrink tube on the wire before this operation.

Agreed. I recently had a demo of the RP3 Elys and RP6 Exact and was genuinely shocked how much better the latter was.

This is often the reported comparison. A more meaningful comparison would mean RP3/Exact/PSU vs RP6/Exact/PSU. Otherwise we don't know if we're hearing the better cartridge and/or external PSU on the RP6. I don't doubt the RP6 is better but how much better I wonder once we account for cart and PSU.

Yes more meaningful ref. sound quality, but for the price of getting the cheaper TT close to the other it might be more prudent to spend the money on the RP6 as the upgrade is a given factor, it looks nicer in the gloss finish and it will always be worth more money should you ever decide to sell.

Actually my plan on the rega p3-24 ( with external PSU) has 2 steps.
1) in short term upgrade the arm counterweight, vta adjuster arrange better feet ( not the most important but lets see alternatives)
2) long term changing plinth... focused natural wooden blocks without cutting and giving shape to much.just alining bottom and top. There are some diy works in the net. Plus isolation platform under.
İ received today tecnoweight and 3 point vta adjuster.

Kondo Ikeda are
- out of my budget
- I do not think to spend that much for RB 301, if it would be higher level arm then maybe to look kondo or ikeda

1) Could you please share your experiences with those above wires
2) dou you have any other recommendation for wire
3) finally based on your experience SUT should be close to tonearm or phono pre (based on this I will decide rewire kit length) my humble straight opinion put stepup close to tonearm immediately step up low voltage MC to MM then cary to phono pre. But I know rules of hifi are not that much simple always. :)
