View Full Version : floorstanders or stand mounts?
Just after some advice. I was going to build some new front speakers for music and movies in my theater room but decided to buy as I don't feel I have the experience yet to do them really well.
Looking at floorstanders but I keep reading that some people prefer stand mounts.
With a budget around $1000-2000 in Australia. I have been reading up on the wharfedale diamond 10.7 and the B&W 683 S2 floorstanders.
At this sort of level, is it worth spending this sort of money on a set of stand mounts and good stands instead or will there be no gain in quality.
Any opinions on these or any other speakers in this price range would be great.

Go second hand mate. You should get hell of a speaker for that. For music and movies I personally would go with a floor standing speaker. Not a big fan of new B&W but your budget could get the 802 matrix. They are superb monitors that will suit music and movies. If you want to build a speaker get a kit speaker. Wilmslow audio sell some superb kits. The stand mount HSM is a big stand mount with a big sound superb speakers. Easy to build up as well.
See if you can get wharfdale opus over in Australia. Again second hand should be no problem. The are far superior to the speakers you are looking at. Ignore the mags and listen to as much as you can.
Epos es 22 and 25 are worth a look and the 30 is even better.
Thanks for the advice. I've started looking at second hand. We are limited to stuff close by and most people here don't like posting big items.
I was leaning towards floor standers for the larger bass drivers for movies.
I might look at kits in this price. I built my seas idunn bookshelf speakers and was looking at building the troels graveson jenzen kit but don't want to mess them up. Plus I will never have heard a kit before building. I'll head to some local shops and get a short list together and ask again on here what people think.

I don't suppose anyone would know if the kit builds would compare to buying a brand name set of speakers.
I have looked at building the troels Graveson jenzen CA transmission lines and also the zaph audio revealator 2.5 way towers that madisound do. These kits are both under $2000 for parts. Do you think they will be a step up from a purchased set of floorstanders. If it is a massive improvement building a kit for the same price, then I may still do this.
If you spend necessary time and effort for cabinets + make the crossover with good quality components and not try to make the economy at crossover. Definitely yes.
Even you will be suprised with the result and beginn to compare upper level commercial speakers.
Before the decision for kit, better to dig deep to characters of drivers. What you want here from speakers, natural or more alive or Shining treble or perfect mid range. .. for example my personal experience, seas is generaly open but, colored and bright. Scanspeak is more natural especially tweeters are very good, Revelator midwoofers are very very Hifi.
İ made nearly 3 years ago Jensen 1071 from Troels gravesen. As you are looking better bass and want to use both stereo and cinema İ shall recommend ekta grande.

The B&W 683 are very good for the money, both for 2 channel and HT. Need a 'chunky' amplifier, though. But if you can woodwork you will get more value from a kit.

I'm confident with the woodwork side and can solder well. I just don't have any experience building crossovers or reading driver characteristics. I can't look at a driver specs and know how it will sound. But a kit with crossover layout/parts list and box plans would be fine for me to do. Just dont want to spend big money and then find out they don't sound any good.
Your 1071's look very nice. I was looking at the Jensen's as they run seas drivers and troels said they will match my idunn kit nicely if I use them together for home theater.
I have heard great things about scanspeak drivers too. That ekta grande kit looks really nice.
I suppose if someone can recommend a kit and help out if I need some tips about the crossover, then this will give me the best quality.
Would there be anY issue using scanspeak driver if I currently have seas idunns that will become rear speakers.
I did not work through home theater systems to much, solved this part with a bose acoustimass set, but based on my humble knowledge, during movie, center speaker deals with almost 60-70 % of the whole sound, then subwoofer then front and at last rear. İf you will not have subwoofer, receiver seperate this duty within center and front mainly.
Therefore İ believe it will not be a big issue.

I'll get a sub too. And need amps still. Basically building a new house with a dedicated theater room and will get all the gear together for it.
As far as the center goes, I suppose whatever kit I build, I just need to make sure there is a design for a center speaker using matching drivers.
What do you think these will be like as front speakers? I really like how my idunn kit sounds and this is the kit I was originally looking at building.

İs a matter of taste. As you already like seas sound and for home theater you will add subwoofer, jenzen will be a very good speaker.

For satellites i recommend Dali Zensor 1's. They have exceptional tonal balance and musicality
Within your budget range absolutely go for second hand standmounts. It costs a lot of money to avoid the "box colouration" and "boom" of cheaper floorstanders.

I would imagine Usher speakers are available in Australia, so try and get a listen to their S520 compact standmounter. It's a well liked speaker at a sensible price.
