View Full Version : Who's Got The Heaviest Bit of Hi-Fi?

We got into this on the Hernia Hi-Fi thread earlier. We are now up to 100kg.

Can you beat this?

(speakers count as pairs. Not singly, so that could be the winner)

Big IMFs and Klipsch are in with a chance, but unlikely to win in my book.

Marco's speakers or Speedysteves horns - whoever has the physically largest speakers.

In diminishing order:

BTH K10A @ 100Kg each
Westrex 2326A @ 57Kg each
JBL Array 1400 @ 52KG each

Who's Got The Heaviest Bit of Hi-Fi?

Not me, guv. :nono:

It's years now since I imposed a 100lb (45Kg) -ish limit on any piece of hifi.

This was due to a Musical Fidelity F18 power amp - weighing in at 53Kg. Sheesh - with its razor-edged heatsinks that was a bastard to move around.

Marco's copper amp is quite heavy so I believe... not much for me in terms to weight really but my dac alone weighs in at 10kg.

40kg, dude. It’s always ‘fun' lifting it up from ground level, and then about 7ft up onto 16 levels of Mana!

My CDP and DAC each weigh about 20kg, which is exceedingly heavy for such items, basically because both are full of monstrously big PSUs, and internally clad in solid copper.

The Lockwoods are heavy enough, at about 65kg each, but not especially heavy for very large speakers. Modern, large floor-standing designs can weigh double that amount, especially ported ones stuffed full of lead shot! ;)

Oh no! I've just seen this, it's so sad. (speakers are of course 100kg each =200kg/pair)

Fookin' ada, I ain't slinging that monstrosity up onto mi shoulder... :rfl:

I was a bit of a sad git in my younger years and I used to wander about with one of these on my shoulder, SQ was pretty good actually and it even had Dolby. Many Top 40 mix-tapes were recorded on this machine :)

I've no idea about how much they actually weigh, but the combined weight of my latest toy, the Kavent SP310, and its torriodal step down transformer is certainly the most hernia inducing combo I've ever owned.

Effem now has a new piece of something poking out from his stomach area after lifting them.

These - http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/Jenzen-SEAS-ER.htm But with sand filled side cheeks and a steel cantilever frame for the top cabinet. There will be 15mm sandstone tops with walnut edging eventually, another few kilos. :) Of course if I'm not winning I can just add more weight. The floor is solid on granite bedrock so the sky's the limit.

Autograph copies with Monitor Reds...rear panels are double thickness, and all acessible voids are sand filled. No idea what they weigh, but never mind a two man lift, these take two people to rock them on their bases.

Why on earth have we not had a sesh so far, Nial? Especially as we’re so close….

You’ve got big Tannoys, so have I, and we both love music. You live in North Wales, so do I - so let’s get together sometime and spin some tunes!

Yeah we should, that'd be great. Aren't you in Wrexham or have I got that wrong?

Marco
22-10-2014, 16:27
Nope, I’m in sunny Wrexham. Based on my previous trips to Snowdonia (and what a stunningly beautiful place it is), we can’t be any more than about an hour and a twenty minutes from each other :)

One of my favourite haunts up that way is Beddgelert. I’d love to live there, as it ticks all the right boxes!

I'm not as far as Beddgelert - more close to Llanberis.

I know where Llanberis is. Send me a PM, and we’ll discuss some dates for a sesh (before Xmas)!

The old studio R2R's are built like battleships, my Telefunken M10 was well over 100Kg with the record and replay amps

Yeah, It's all relative - compared to say Cessaro 5 way or other multi-way horn systems. For those the wallet would def. be much heavier than mine:)
I can also sell mine for about or more than I gave for it, as the rare compression drivers are continually rising in price, good investment I think.

My audio analogue maestro came in at 52kg and was a nightmare to move due to heat sinks and no handles. It was a cracking amp though. My current amp comes in at around 40kg and is awkward to move due to the weight being mostly at the back end ware the massive transforms are. Cdp comes in at 25kg.

Macca

Big advantage with some of this kit is that even if your house got broken into it just isn't going to get nicked unless they've brought a big van and a pump truck with them. Even then they're going to struggle with some of this stuff.

Taking it one stage further you could encase all of your components in concrete, and anything else of value, and then cancel the insurance...
