Someone has passed on their stinking cold to :steam: as they come into work and say don't come near me i'm full of cold and then walk right passed you breathing through their mouth NICE mind you a very pretty lady :stalks:. which means i cannot play music because my ears are blocked and it doesn't sound right :doh:.
I love winter just colds kind of come with it JOY.
Anyone else having the joy of this at the moment.
Sorry for the gibberish bit zoned out as not sleeping well.........

Haven't had my flu jab either - I forgot and the surgery didn't remind me. I've had something bubbling under for a few weeks now but it seems to finally be easing.

I had my flu jab yesterday. I'm just starting to feel a bit achy. When I've had them before, I usually feel a bit rough for a few days...Oh well, here we go again.
Still it beats the real deal.

Ah same as me. I went in for my annual 'MOT' on Thursday and had my Flu jab at the same time. I never feel the jab when I have it. Unlike the blood test they did on Friday. Ouch! And they wanted rather a lot of blood. Left me feeling a bit odd all day.
I don't think there's much about yet in the way of Flu in the UK.

Enjoy it, dude (and I know you will), but I wouldn’t thank you for that type of heat. I’m enjoying snuggling up to the log fire roaring away just now, as it’s blowing a wintry gale outside. Nice and cosy, as I’m spinning some choons! :)

We have my wife's elder brother and sister here for a week, so we have started lighting the fires in the kitchen and the front room. With the doors open, the whole house keeps comfortable. Although we don't actually need them yet, there is no doubt that it makes the place cheerful and cozy.
The big decision will be when they go home. Do we keep the fires on or wait until it gets really cold? Its only around 13/15 degrees during the day at present. Usually, we just put another jumper on or start with the thermals before burning wood.
Maybe we'll just switch the blankets on at night.

For me, rooms must be cosy and relaxing, and nothing is cosier than sitting in a room, lit only by the glow of a log fire (listening to the gentle cracking of the logs), and enjoying the natural, healthy heat it gives, as opposed to the stuffy/oppressive, headache-inducing one generated by central heating systems and/or gas or electric fires.
Consequently, we light the fire now every day from 3pm onwards (it’s warm enough here before then without it), and cold, dark winter nights become wonderful! :)

Even at this time of year, the sun hits the front of the house with enough strength to warm the rooms we use in the evenings. The walls are almost a metre thick and once warm, it takes for ever for the temperature to drop.
I rather enjoy wrapping up with several layers. Perhaps it reminds me of my childhood. You know, fifteen kids to a room and a lump of coal to last the day, that sort of thing.
Too damned hot this evening. I actually had to open a window to get the temperature down to something reasonable. Jotul woodburning stoves are extremely efficient.
I do agree about central heating though. Can stand it and always used to send up with constant sniffles during the winter.

Yup, I hate the ‘dry' type of heat central heating creates with a passion, and so only switch it on when the temperature drops below zero. I also hate stuffy rooms. Somehow, with coal or log real fires, you can have a lovely warm room, but the heat is never stuffy or oppressive :)
Fifteen kids and a lump of coal? Lol, as an only child, such things are beyond my comprehension! ;)
Our walls here are about as thick as yours, but as we have leaded windows (the house is listed), they’re not 100% draught proof, in the way of modern double glazing, and we have original tiled floors (with rugs on), rather than carpets, so although the walls retain heat from the sun, it doesn’t take long for the room to get cold without any heating on.
As I said, up until 3pm it’s fine, then it’s bring on the fire, baby! :exactly:

As usual there are several common colds going around this year it seems. One of them's the proper job though. I've known people off work and in bed with it, and a guy round the corner from me had to cut his foreign holiday short (he's still deaf in one ear from flying with the plumbing in his head swollen shut and/or plugged with mucus). It does come with the full suite of symptoms - runny eyes and nose, sweating and shivering fits, aching, fatigue followed by the inevitable cough. The sore throat is the piece de resistance though. With normal colds these show up at the start and disappear on Day 2 or 3 to make way for the remaining effects. I went into my local pharmacy after 18 days on paracetamol, which was the only way I could suppress the pain sufficiently to force food down the tiny red-raw hole which my throat had become, and was told that I shouldn't have taken the paracetamol for more than a few days without checking with my GP. So I called him and he simply said that that's what this year's cold does and I should just keep taking the tablets. It would eventually go away, and sure enough within a week or so it did. Two weeks on and I'm still coughing though. So if you can I'd recommend giving this one a miss. Fortunately it doesn't seem to be too infectious. Mrs VB didn't catch it (she did sleep in a different bed for a couple of weeks though while it was at its worst).

It's not noticeably better here.
Had quite a bit of snow today(first of year). Fortunately the ground was so wet as was the snow and sleet so it never got a hold on ground. Its back to rain now.

Headed to Florida for the Christmas. Last time me and her had any time off was in June for the festival so we're overdue. Looking forward to visiting some of my favourite haunts in the keys and enjoying a bit of warmth again.

Strangely enough, a good few years ago. I was responsible for overseeing the snow and ice treatment of much of the road network in West London. 8ft snowdrifts are not unheard of here (though not so recently).
Well, the snow has been dissolved ( pity this parliament hasn't:eyebrows: ), and replaced again by torrential rain and high winds. We are certainly having a bashing since the turn of the year. was out n the studio today for first time in 3 weeks and all is well. warm, dry and solid... great shed that.
Been blowing a gale here for the last week. Not desperately cold though, like it can be in January, so I'm not complaining.
Still raining and blowing here. Not even been out to the bucket today; I am becoming a hermit, reading books and listening to tunes.
Well, it is still bitter cold here, and what snow thats on ground is here for a while. dont think it got above 0. To remain cold all week apparently and a little chance of more snow. Roads are fine(well gritted) apart from some parts of schemes etc as was out and about in car.
Remember that our resident southerners won’t have a scooby what ‘schemes’ are…! ;)
Try ‘housing estates’ instead.

Rain just started here (London) and it's not that much above freezing. Could turn to snow.
This morning I woke up to find there had been a hard frost overnight. It's been very cold here all day: cold, clear but even when the sun shines, it's still bitterly cold. Brrrrr!
Never mind, after doing some shopping I made a pot of tea, toasted some crumpets and settled down to do the crossword and play some tunes. :)

Used to like a bit of crumpet too :eyebrows: Daughter has been good to me lately; she has brought me soup 2 days running plus a nice scone yesterday and a slice of lemon cake today...all homemade and yummy.
Snowing again....:steam: thought i'd seen the back it...ah well did shopping yesterday so will just wait it out with some tunes.

Snow didn't happen at all. That's the second time this month the Met Office have predicted 12 hours of snowfall in this area and we have had at best a couple of minutes worth. Not that I'm complaining.
lucky you. not so here. need to go out as well so somehow going to have to clear a foothold and the car. ....im going out...i may be some time :eyebrows:
We have now had a bit of snow but roads look clear. I'm guessing the worst of it will happen overnight if it's going to happen.

I hope it does pass, any sign of snow on our roads the Bus service wont run & i'll end up setting off for work in the morning at 4:00am
If I get the bus to work it is two buses and takes almost an hour, plus a ten minute walk to and from the stops either side. Cost one way is £4.80. A taxi is £7.60 so I get a taxi. Ten minute ride door to door, no walking.
Same as you any snow at all even a dusting the buses stop and they are not that reliable in the first place. And their engines are mostly knackered, they trundle along laying a smoke screen behind them that would be the envy of any Royal Navy destroyer. And filthy dirty, both inside and out.

Yeh im on a Retail park so it's bus into Town then Bus to the park. I get a week bus pass for £13.50 so it aint worth getting taxis' I can walk it tho in around hour & quarter. clock on at 5:30am..But when im waiting for the bus & it does not come im guarenteed to be late.
a mix up rain and snow with pretty gusty winds here. not lying or likely too as there is a lot of lying water
I don't mind walking home but not walking into work. Too much effort too early in the day. About the same distance as you, takes an hour and a quarter but it's up hill and down dale all the way. Would save me a bomb, though

cold windy and very wet again today. i am staying in.
For the last few days we have had fine sunny weather. Still cold in the wind but pleasant nonetheless. However there have been the occasional light but brief showers - so the grass has never had a chance to really dry out.
Yesterday, informed that rain was on its way again, I decided to get the mower out and cut the grass. Glad I did as it rained briefly in the late afternoon, so I could look out the window with a self satisfied look on my face.
Anyway rejoice - Spring is on its way judging by all the crocus flowers popping up here. :)
Well March is going out the way it came in... last 2 days have been very cold with flickers of snow and now we have a storm going on...very wet n windy..........I hope April rings better weather.

Was icy this morning but turned into the best day of year. I went out without a jacket and was warm enough. Mental or what...it was baltic last night and all the cars were covered in deep frost.

Lol, as it's half-term (so Del's off work), we were walking around beaches and hills in beautifully sunny Anglesey yesterday. The temperature got up to 20°C at one point! Had some superb freshly caught Anglesey lobster, sitting outside overlooking the Irish Sea, at one of our favourite pubs in the remote village of Rhoscolyn:

Grant, one thing I noticed when I was up visiting you, was how much colder it is in Scotland, even compared with where I am. It's something that hit me quite significantly, as I hadn't experienced it for a while.

Defo, mate, as I've also been down to the Cornish coast. It was just as warm yesterday in Anglesey, too! It really is stunningly lovely round there, and quite remote. Well away from all the idiots and the rat race! Just my sort of thing :cool:
We're quite lucky to live where we are, as we can do the 'town or city thing' when we want, and are also within easy reach of some lovely beaches and countryside. It's also nowhere near as crowded up here as it is down south, on the coast. Yesterday, we were nearly the only ones on that lovely stretch of beach - no fooking screaming kids or chavs in sight!! :)

Er, sort of on thread - ish. I read today that you lot are likely to get temperatures of 33 degrees tomorrow. It's been that here for two days and tomorrow we are promised 41 degrees. Last time we had that sort of temperature we lost some chickens. They just keeled over and died. It looks as though we might have a barnful tomorrow, the chicken, ducks, rabbits and cats all together out of the sun. Should be fun. Thankfully, the house stays resolutely cool no matter what it's like outside.
I'm looking forward to the first cold of winter!

Can't stand that sort of heat - especially in London with all that humidity!! :nono:
25, for me, is plenty. Any more than that, I find rather uncomfortable, especially as neither our houses nor many of our shops/public places in the UK are geared up for such heat [carpeted floors, lack of air conditioning, poor ventilation in general and very stuffy].
Purely and simply, anything over 35 degrees really isn't healthy.
Thank goodness we have natural stone floors/tiles and rugs in our lounge (and bedroom), instead of carpets, and with the property being a listed building, the leaded windows are smaller than what you'll find in modern homes, so less opportunity for the sun to blaze in. It's lovely, when you've been outside in the heat, coming into a nice cool house - and in the winter, we have a big log fire to keep us warm! :)

I started early this morning and mowed a bit and then picked the first crop of blackcurrents. I've drunk gallons of water (hate the stuff) and am dripping. The cats are slinking in one by one. Much too hot for them out there. It's already over 30 degrees and it's only 10.30 here:eek:
Thankfully, the houses here are built properly too. It's like walking into a cold room from outside.

29 degrees here and rising. It will be a fair bit hotter later and when the breeze dies down this afternoon, as it usually does, it will be really uncomfortable.
I currently have my traditional end of June cold, where muppets in the office have the air con on too cold, but won't listen to sense.
Unless it feels like a fridge, they are not happy.
It's going to be hot here today as well, and cold or not, I will be cooling off in the pool later.

I know you say that the pool cools you, Kevin, but you'll still have to protect yourself (particularly your head and shoulders) from the sun, which means 'oiling up' (hate that greasy feeling with a passion) and sitting there baking, unless you've got a retractable roof fitted over your pool! ;)
Me? I'll stick with sitting under the shade of our pergola, suncream-free, with me mits clamped around an ice-cold beer.... :)

Salty certainly. Rather more hints of garlic, basic, sage, fennel, tarragon and chives though. We do like to mix our herbs on the salad.

In all seriousness, if I were in your position, I'd be inclined to use the pool at night, when the water is just a nice temperature, after having been warmed up all day by the sun. No way would I be in it during the searing heat of the day.

That's interesting, because here it's sometimes almost as warm at night as it is during the day, especially as we live in an old house with hugely thick walls, which 'cook' all day in the sun, making the house roasting warm at night, especially as our bedroom is upstairs (and heat rises)... it can get like a fooking sauna! :eek:
Consequently, during the summer, we sleep 'au naturel', with no blankets or covers on the bed - and the windows fully open! I really don't function at all well in the heat - it can make me quite ill.
I'd defo have air-con in any house I lived in permanently abroad, also marble floors installed throughout, and wooden shutters fitted onto the windows, to keep the sun out when it is really hot :)

Bedrooms upstairs? Are you mad? :eyebrows: Three out of the four bedrooms are downstairs. The roof space is now well insulated above the other bedrooms and they remain cool. It is like an oven in the roof space though.
We have tiled floors throughout the house, except the bedrooms which have parquet flooring. Tiles are cold in winter, but under floor heating takes care of this.

Unfortunately, that's the layout of the house, dude! Glad you've got shutters - those make a huge difference. We have them in our family home in Tuscany, constantly shut during the day (and marble floors fitted throughout, which are super cool) - you couldn't survive otherwise...

Quite cool here this morning. Strongish breeze which helps. 24 degrees in the car.
Meteo says more 40+ over the next few days though. We will find stuff to do indoors.
Tell me about it, mate... Last night at 6pm, it was 35 outside on our patio! Needless to say, we ate inside... The good thing is there is very little humidity here and a nice wee breeze :)
Today's also meant to be another scorcher. Got a nice big electric fan 'trained' on my seating area and plenty of ice-cold beers in the fridge, so should be able to cope! ;)

Yeah, my wife's the same, although she's certainly feeling the heat here at the moment.
In a bedroom, I prefer it cooler, rather than warmer, so 18-20 degrees is ample. I'm the opposite: very warm-blooded, so feel the heat like mad, and hate sitting (or walking around) sweating all day, as it makes you feel so dirty.
Consequently, I've been known to have 3-4 showers a day, when the heat is really bad (as I can't stand feeling sticky and sweaty)!

The first real love of my life (have to say that in case Ronnie sees this:eyebrows:) was an Italian girl from Milan. We went on a holiday south to Giglio. The temperature was like this and I just couldn't cope. She thought I was the strong silent type. Only got one right.
The fact that I just couldn't operate in temperatures that she found comfortable was one of the excuses for gradually distancing herself. That and the fact I was twice her age:lol:
I'd take Austria too.. or Finland....or maybe Siberia.
Me too... You have to remember that essentially we're all just big slabs of raw meat - and what happens to raw meat that's left out in the sun? ;)
There's also a reason why folk live longer in cold countries, than warm ones. Think about it [it's directly related to the above].

Not sure about that long-lived thing I thought in Europe at least that the Greeks, Italians and Spanish have the longest life-spans on average.
Yes, that's mainly to do with a healthy diet, which of course is also very important. However, all else being equal, raw meat lasts longer in a freezer than it does lying in the sun - and that essentially was my point! ;)
The unhealthiest thing in this country is folk who seemingly can't survive in the winter without having their central heating systems on full blast... No wonder they're forever getting colds! Some houses I go into, I have to walk out, as the rooms are so stuffy I can hardly breathe - and mostly it's down to decisions made by the women of the house!
The worst culprits, however, are restaurants, where in the height of summer there is no air-con, no windows open and precious little ventilation. IMO, for a commercial premises, that's an absolute disgrace, providing customers with such an uncomfortable environment in which to eat.
As soon as I sit down, however, I open up the window beside me and let some fooking air in, often to the chagrin of other diners who seemingly can't cope with getting a 'wee draught' on their chops! :doh: :rolleyes:

Deliveries for next winter start soon so I have to clear up the mess I've made over the last half year. When I'm making stuff and woodturning I just dump the offcuts on the woodpile. Must get organised now I'm winding down.

warming up now here and if it were not for the lovely breeze we would be a sizzling steak....yum.!! not had a steak in years. yesterday morning it was so cold i nearly put the fire on but in late pm it got warm when clouds cleared. managed to get the grass cut before it got too bad which damn near ended me. aint doing much today though as pretty sore.

I think I could cope better with that than the opposite... However, as with anything else in life, there's a balance to be had. It's about being comfortable - and how anyone can be comfortable in the kind of 'dry' air-sapping heat modern central heating systems produce, when turned on full blast, is beyond me.

It is dead meat, though, not living tissue. Because it is dead it will always decay it is just that cold retards the process. I don't think there is a correlation myself. But I don't like lying in the sun either, I can't take it for more than a few minutes before I am back in the shade. How folk can lie on sun loungers for hours with no shade at all over them I can't imagine. There were people doing that in the Caribbean when I was there in February and the heat of the sun was absolutely crippling. This current UK heat wave is nothing at all by comparison.

I like steak! ... it dont like me these days alas. digestion is not great and red meat and fat are a no no in any quantity. I do occasionally crack and have a fry up or a nice rollnsausage mind!
It is dead meat, though, not living tissue. Because it is dead it will always decay it is just that cold retards the process. I don't think there is a correlation myself.
I agree with the former of course, however, I do feel that there is a correlation, as cooler environments are inherently healthier than exceptionally hot ones - and eventually that's bound to have an impact on the well being of the respective inhabitants of both environments.
But I don't like lying in the sun either, I can't take it for more than a few minutes before I am back in the shade. How folk can lie on sun loungers for hours with no shade at all over them I can't imagine. There were people doing that in the Caribbean when I was there in February and the heat of the sun was absolutely crippling. This current UK heat wave is nothing at all by comparison.
Utter madness, but those are the ones who'll either end up getting skin cancer, or regret it in other ways later in life, as sun worshipping also ages you terribly (as indeed does smoking). You just have to look at the horrible 'wrinkly leather' appearance of people's skin who expose themselves to the sun (or sun beds) regularly, to see ample evidence of that.
Worse, although far healthier than using sun beds, are women who insist on plastering themselves with 'fake tan', in a way that just makes them look orange and streaky! WTF is that all about?? Attractive it is not! :doh: :mental:

Ditto. Severe tanning is just gross, IMO. A 'healthy glow' is nice, but attempts by white people to look like Red Indians is a total no-no! One should remember it wasn't so long ago that having a tan meant that one was common. It was very much the domain of the working classes - especially with women! ;)

thats why ive no wrinkles...not much sun if i can avoid it. i wear a panama in sunny days if i have to go out and never take my top off....that also saves on court fines:eyebrows:

I'm wearing shorts at the moment, though it only seems to be about 25C here. And no, I'm not going to post any pics of me wearing them: the world is not yet ready for that!
Not worn shorts since I was eleven years old. (That was back in the day when short trousers were compulsory at primary school, even in the winter).
When it's warm, I'll wear shorts, but I think there's a certain age when one should stop, as it just doesn't look good - especially on those in the varicose veins brigade! :eek: :spew:
Thing is, when you get older, you have to realise that what suited you (and what you could get away with wearing) 20 or 30 years ago, will very unlikely apply now. In that respect, you don't half see some right 'sights' walking about the place....! :doh:

Well, here I am, 68 years old, no doubt knobbly kneed and a bit scrawny, wearing cut down jeans or shorts. Who gives a monkey's what it looks like? Nothing worse than trousers wrapping themselves around soggy legs and making them sweat even more.
At my age I'm not too concerned about pulling the ladies (Ronnie might object a little) and in any case, it's my overwhelmingly powerful personality, ravishingly handsome physog and outstanding charm combined with not a little self deception that does the job not the sight of my stick like legs.

Lol - fair enough! Our approach is somewhat different then. I'll stop wearing shorts when I no longer have the legs for it... Fortunately, I still have reasonably muscular legs (from previous years of regular cycling), and with olive skin [the Italian bit], carry a natural tan.
You're not one of those guys too, who are balding in the middle of their head, and for some reason best known to them, continue to grow their hair at the sides, creating that ridiculous 'friar tuck' look, or someone who operates the 'sweep over' effect - or worse, have long, straggly hair half way down their back, but a big baldy pate in the middle of their dome?
Now *those* are looks you want to avoid like the plague - at ANY age! :lol:

Still a steady 35C here, as it has been most of the day. I see the little cursor on the thermometer is at the 37 position. It must have hit that whilst I was out before lunch. The hottest LWC recorded temperature today was apparently at Kew, where it was 36.7. Guess where I was then. Driving through Kew, in heavy traffic. Yuk!
As for shorts, I have a rule, 'don't wear 'em & don't drink 'em'!

I trust this is acceptable?? Ronnie cuts my hair. As I have to be seen out in public with her, I leave it to her discretion. I very seldom look in a mirror anyway. We have enough cracked glass around the place.
As my legs seldom see the sun they tend to be white or slightly pink - not a pretty sight I'm sure. I rather be comfortable in any situation though.

Beards are time saving. I can't stand the thought of having to scrape my chin every day, stupid waste of time. As my hair now grows downwards - obviously - I only need a haircut every few months.
Yes, 'cos you've kept your hair short. My own hair has been thinning for a while, but I keep it super-short, so it's not obvious, especially in this weather, as for me, there's nothing worse than having long, lanky and greasy, sweaty hair, swinging about your face! :rolleyes:
But when you're going bald, and let it grow long at the sides and back, all you're doing is HIGHLIGHTING the baldness in the MIDDLE. Maybe those folk don't give a fuck, which is fair enough, but I just couldn't go about like that. It's the same with old guys and ponytails [often accompanied with black leather jackets]! :doh: :mental:

Beards are ok, as long as they're kept tidy - and most importantly - food and snot free! Beards can be really manky things, and a haven for all sorts of germs and bacteria. If you've got a major one, it needs to be washed regularly. The other thing is when it goes grey, which just ages you more.
Whilst I sometimes sport a few days growth, I'd never let it grow into a proper beard. On that note, what is it with teenagers these days? I don't know about in France, but here you've got 16 year-olds going about with big, bushy 'old man's beards' - and that's just the women! :D
I mean, there's plenty of time for looking old when you ARE old. I just don't get it. It just looks bloody ridiculous.

Well it's partly a symptom of a society that worships appearance. It really isn't important what anyone looks like. We all have a template of what is acceptable and everyone is compared to that and most, no doubt found wanting. The template depends on many things of course, how we were bought up, who we mix with etc etc.
Cleanliness and attitude seem reasonable to take account of.
