OS X Yosmite - is it safe to download?

Guys (I’m addressing the Apple Mac users and the computer literate/knowledgeable here),

I’m getting update messages on my Mac Pro suggesting that I should upgrade for free to the above new operating system. Has anyone else done this, and if so were there any teething troubles/problems, and also what are the advantages?

I’d heard that Yosmite still had a few bugs, so I didn’t want to go ahead with the upgrade and then upset the functionality of my computer. Your advice, as ever, would be appreciated :)

I'm backing up to the time machine & simultaneously downloading Yosemite from the app store on my Mac mini... I'll let you know but it likely won't be completed until this evening :(

I wouldn't do it just yet.

It used to be an automatic thing for me to update. However, things are a bit more complex these days and half the time, I find that their idea of an update actually spoils my experience of using the Mac, we get used to the way things work. If there are specific things you have seen in the new OS fair enough but if the Mac suits you as it is, why change. It will be a long time before any programs you want to use will only work with Yosemite.

The last automatic update I did was with iTunes and I hated it so much that I went back to the old version. Apple don't make that easy though and you have to know your way about the library to fix it.

In any case, I would wait until six months or so are up and all the bugs have appeared. The days when Apple could be guaranteed to put out perfect progs are sadly long gone.

Hi Marco,

As a seasoned mac user I have had my fingers burnt more than once by downloading the latest OS X software from Apple.

My advice would be to leave it for a few weeks and then download once all the bugs have been removed!

All up & running... Looks pretty sweet. No issues with Photoshop or MS office '11.

One major thing: system seems to be a good bit quicker now which is nice.

I hit the freezing progress bar - about 1/3rd way. Took several power downs and Safe Mode start ups. I gather from Apple Forum that a startup on login app , BT Cloud was the issue. Disable from start on login is supposed to help.

Edit: BT Cloud was a distraction i.e. not the startup program causing the hanging progress bar. Further chats on the Apple forum for Yosemite Installs suggested that Anti Virus software can be a problem. So I disabled BT/MacAffee NetprotectPlus and now I have a consistent starting laptop.

If you use BT Broadband and Netprotect Plus that can be a problem.

I agree; I think this version of Mac OS X is optimized for use with retina displays. Just installed it out of curiosity on my non-retina 13 inch Macbook Pro which is used exclusively for music playback (controlled most of the time via the “Remote” app), but I certainly will not install “Yosemite” on my 17 inch Macbook Pro and the 27 inch iMac. Both use non-retina displays. On “traditional” monitors optimized screen fonts work better than a classic font like Helvetica, which is designed for high resolution output on printing machines.

The blood red iTunes icon looks strange, as well as the somehow “flat” appearance of the user interface. The deck looks a little bit garish, the Finder icon is plain ugly. However, under the hood everything seems to be working flawlessly and speedy so far.

Installed on both my iMac and MacBook Pro without problem. All my photo programmes run well and I like the changes to iWork.

Been running Yosemite for a couple of months on a 27 iMac, never had a problem with any of the beta versions

No issues with the new font but that seems to be down to the individuals display ? The "flat" look does seem a bit dated to me & the translucent windows feel very Windows Vista... In a bad way !

Overall I prefer the look/feel of Mavericks but Yosemite is a good 20% quicker so I'm happy to compromise.

Installed Yosemite on my 2011 iMac and 2012 MacBook Air yesterday.

A word or warning.

If you use Trim enabler for third part SSD then it will lock up your Mac and you will not be able to boot!! :eek:

This happened to me on the iMac as I use a Samsung SSD with a thunderbolt connection for the OS and apps with data on the internal HD - works like a charm and is very fast. But after upgrading to Yosemite I could not boot the Mac. No issues with the Mac Air as it does not need a third party app to enable Trim.

Anyway, in the end it was no big deal I did a clean install of Yosemite from a bootable USB drive and then just reinstalled from my TimeMachine backup - only took about 45 mins. I then installed the latest Trim Enabler (3.2.5) and all is fine.

As always make sure you have a working and tested backup before a major update.

That's a real shame ... Before the change I was thinking of upgrading RAM from 4gb to 8gb on my MacMini, but so far on Mavericks I have been very happy with the speed of the system and will stick with the 4gb for now ... The way it handles memory more efficiently is rather impressive IMO.

I am on 10.6.8 and do indeed, find it perfectly adequate for my needs. The very thought of using the cloud gives me the willies. I want my stuff to hand so I can control it, I will never believe that the cloud can be made secure enough to risk personal details etc.

Gordon, if you ever do need to upgrade to Mavericks or Yosemite on your Mac Pro, the rather excellent SFOTT (Sixty Four On Thirty Two) works brilliantly. I recently upgraded my very old Mac Pro 1,1 with an SSD and new graphics card, and it runs Mavs a charm. Easy to do too, if you've a basic computer knowledge.

As to Marcos OP, I too am waiting for feedback. Seems to be mainly good so far, but if I can give any advice it would be this - do a full backup first. Either time machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper - matters not, just that it's done!!!

I back up my whole pc Inc operating system onto an external drive. Would take a lifetime to put it on a cloud and I'm with Gordon as no way to be sure a cloud is secure. Win 8 can still do it it is just well hidden.

Interesting, I shall investigate. I have Time machine on most of the time. The thought of losing half a lifetime's rubbish in one fell swoop is too much to contemplate.
