I have just sold my Teufel Ultima 800 speakers. In order to audition them, the lady bought her NAD 7020 receiver with her. I assume that its just a 3020 with a radio added.

I am impressed. It wipes the floor with my old Arcam Alpha. I can see why they sold them in zillions and were considered a budget giant killer. It has terrific drive too. 20 watts per channel but sounds like a lot more. The Arcam has 40 but struggles with the Teufels which demand 100 minimum the manufacturers allege.

So many of these old amps seem to have what it takes. Only the strange need to upgrade seems to be a reason to replace them.

She has left it with me to fix the speaker outlets until she collects the speakers (with two strong men!!) Just a dry joint and soon fixed. I'm listening in the next room and it sounds like Dave Brubeck is playing in there. Thats what it takes.

I might look out for one for us.

She is 74 years old. Born in Luxemburg, speaks English, French, German, Italian and Dutch. Drives a warm Lancia. She knows about Teufel from her time in Germany. She likes opera which went down like a lead balloon with us when she was playing it but the Ultimas actually did very well, even at low volume. I'm used to belting out jazz or baroque on them which they thrive on.

However, if she is happy with them, I am happy with her money:)

Lovely receiver the 7020. If they went wrong, it was usually the mains transformer failing for some reason.

Hmm.....I don't know why I used that word. I am rather allergic to receivers. The one I had to suffer found all the assurance policies and dosh I had sort of mislaid. Its taken me 20 years to recover from her kind ministrations.:(

Mm preamp may be a tad "rich" and lose a bit of detail but it's more alive than the quad 33. Always my recommendation for a budget starter although their 2nd hand price has creaped up :)

No its not. I have directly compared the two and they both have their strengths. Overall the 33 is more accurate to what I hear in the 'real' world. More enjoyable is up to you.
