View Full Version : ** A simple step-by-step guide showing how to include pictures in your ads **
[Note this has been copied from Alex’s thread in The Gallery section].
It seems that linking to photos is a constant source of problems for some of our members, so I thought I would put together a step-by-step guide to expand on the instructions already put together by Rob.
First of all - let's look at how you can link to any image or photo that is already on the web.
You need the link to the actual IMAGE and not the web page. (If you are using Google Images as a search, be sure to click through to the full image and not just the thumbnail in the search window, otherwise you will just link to the low resolution version.)
In Microsoft Internet Explorer, right-click the image you want to include in your post, and choose "Properties" and then highlight and copy the link for "Address (URL)" half way down the pop-up box that appears, and then close the Properties box. Highlight by clicking and dragging the mouse over the whole of the link until it is highlighted black, then right-click and select (left click) "Copy"
https://i.imgur.com/n21ynSP.jpg
With Google Chrome it is easier - just Right Click the image you want to link to, and then choose "Copy image URL" from the drop-down.
https://i.imgur.com/teL4X1P.jpg
The principal is the same with Mozilla Firefox - but this time the option is called "Copy Image Location"
https://i.imgur.com/a6rKrGG.jpg
Whichever browser you use, you should now have the URL of the image copied to your clipboard, and you are now ready to include in your AoS post.
The easy way is to use the "Image" button. Make sure the cursor is where you want the picture to appear in your post screen, and click the button - this will create the "tags" that tells the forum software you wish to display a picture.
https://i.imgur.com/6JRJ8on.jpg
A small window will appear - right-click the text and choose "Paste" to paste the link you copied earlier.
https://i.imgur.com/XPdaNa6.jpg
Click "OK" and the system will automatically place the code in your post, be sure to move away from the highlighted text or you will delete it.
https://i.imgur.com/ReTfRHK.jpg
So - in practice, all you do is press the Image button, and then paste the link where you want the picture - job done!
You can also just type the IMG "tags" directly on screen (as they appear above) if you're feeling confident...
When you complete your post, the Image will appear where you have placed the text - easy!
Uploading Your Own Images to Photobucket
If you want to put photos of your own in a post, you first need to get them onto the web. Although you can "attach" a photo directly to the forum, this only includes a thumbnail in the post and it looks a lot nicer just to include the whole picture. To enable you to link to a picture, you need to upload your own photos to a free image hosting site such as Photobucket. (Others are available, but I personally think Photobucket is the easiest.)
http://photobucket.com/
You will need to create an account if you don't already have one - this is straightforward, and you should just be able to follow the instructions on the site. Then, it is time to upload your own pictures. Try to keep these to a small size - I'd suggest no more than 1000 pixels wide - you can use Photobucket to resize the photos if needed once uploaded.
https://i.imgur.com/RMZdAc8.jpg
You might want to create a new album especially for the purpose - click the New Album button - which will give you this screen: By default it sets the view to "Public" - make sure you don't change this, otherwise the images won't appear on the forum.
https://i.imgur.com/zCgwVrT.jpg
Once you've created your new album, you now need to choose the photos to upload. Click the big green "Select photos and videos" button
https://i.imgur.com/RMZdAc8.jpg
You will then get a standard Folder viewer - navigate until you find the folder where your photos are stored, and then click the image you want to upload. If you hold down the "Ctrl" button, each image you click will be added to the upload list, so you can upload multiple photos in one go.
https://i.imgur.com/kz2DSiv.jpg
Once you are happy you have selected all the images you need, click the "Open" button and the photos will begin to upload.
https://i.imgur.com/yl5pa4y.jpg
Once your photos are stored in Photobucket, it is then simply a case of "linking" to them in your forum post, in the same way as we did at the beginning of this tutorial. In Photobucket it is even easier, as you can copy the whole "IMG" code, including the URL and the Tags: All you do is click the "IMG Code" you see under the photo in Photobucket - it will briefly show "Copied"
https://i.imgur.com/yM8MgFD.jpg
All you need to do now, is just paste the copied text into the forum where you want the image. (Just put the cursor where you want the picture, and then "Ctrl" and V or right click the mouse and choose "Paste") - you don't need to worry about the Image button, as Photobucket has already created the code for you when you copied it. Job Done.
https://i.imgur.com/ReTfRHK.jpg
I'm happy to try and help further if you are still having trouble - drop me a PM and I'll do my best.
In the meantime - happy pasting!
Alex.

Just a little rider to that.
If you only have a mobile phone with camera, but don't know how to use the photos, just attach them to an email to yourself and then save the image to 'pictures' on your computer. Then you can access them to post here via PhotoBucket or TinyPic (which I use) or any other image hosting site. Most are free.
I find TinyPic very easy to use, it's free and requires no membership. As do most hosting sites, It has a selection of picture sizes and a forum specific image choice. That's the one you click on.

Kin ell that looks complicated :D
If I need to post a photo I use Royal Mail
I think there have been a number of changes to photobucket since that was originally done. For one, the privacy settings are more flexible - you can set it so someone can't just link to your album from a linked photo and troll through all of your pictures. Also uploading photos is just drag-n-drop. Probably other differences, but I can't remember them, and I use both Mac and MS so I'd probably mix them up anyway.
I kinda fell out of love with p bucket and moved to imageshack. Best thing I did.
As for using a phone camera it is easy peasy to use Tapatalk app to post pics direct from the photo in the phone. That way you don't need another hosting program. It does it all pretty much instantly. In the reply section touch the plus in corner then on expanded screen touch the first little image of a camera and just select the PIC. A doddle .
I also use (and much prefer Imageshack). However, I don’t care what procedure folk use to post pics of their stuff for sale, as long as pics are indeed posted! ;)

I rarely use a computer except to RIP music. I have read these posts carefully but would like to understand how to post a picture on a i-Pad which is my prefered device. I've got a Photobucket account but still only manage to get the little thumbnails!

Anyone know what has happened with Tapatalk? I was uploading as was my want with no problems. Now, I get a pop-up saying I need to install the latest version of Tapatalk to upload a photo. There is no update on Goggle Play and I've tried deleting it and then re-instsalling it, but still no joy.
the latest version is 4.9.5 which i am using a!d have just done 2 pics without issue

The latest update mightn't be suitable with Gingerbread. If I change the background colour the small image is lost!
Gingerbread? I prefer shortbread, myself…

Get Tapatalk.
It's doddle to upload photos - if it works!
Really gutted can't get it to work for me now. Looking at comments on Goggle Play others have also lost the ability to upload photos after the update.

Not used I pad but use a tablet. Don't now use the bucket much but if you make sure you select the picture in full size and select the direct link when entered in the IMG box you should get a full size pic.
If you set the default size on pc then as long as you bring up the full image to the screen then get the direct code it should work
Despite rumours to the contrary, posting photos from Flickr is perfectly possible if they are on your account. If you're having difficulties this may help.
It is much more complicated that it used to be but basically go to the ‘share’ icon for the photo you want to post and choose ‘HTML embed’ from the share menu. Choose the size you want and then copy the code in it's entirety:
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/125938826@N08/20451926589/in/photostream" title="Moode alsamixer"><img src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/774/20451926589_32fff9c9cd_c.jpg" width="800" height="469" alt="Moode alsamixer"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
From the code pick out the ‘farm’ URL – from https up to and including .jpg as in this example
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/774/20451926589_32fff9c9cd_c.jpg
Then use the insert image facility in the AoS message box to post the URL – this will add your image to the message
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/774/20451926589_32fff9c9cd_c.jpg
Yes i did it once as a trial and it wirked...cant remember what i did mind:doh:
HI
I need to upload some images. Imageshack wants to charge me money and I photobucket seems to have forgotten who I am (and won't let me sign in afresh), can I do this from Flickr or something?

You will need to upload them to a photo hosting company, then use the IMG link to post into the ad. I was never able to work out uploading to the site.

Once you have the photo selected, use the 'resize' option drop down menu, Message Board size is OK for most things, 15" Screen is bigger. Left click green 'Upload Now' button. It will probably ask for a security option, just do as it says, then left click on 'Upload Now' again. Once uploaded, you should get four sharing options shown to the left, left click on the second one down to highlight it in black. Then right click on it and select the 'copy' option, Then assuming you already have the AOS page you want the picture on available, left click on a suitable blank area, then right click on it and link should be shown.
It sounds complicated, but is easy enough once you get used to it. You can practice by sending yourself PM's and trying to load photos onto them. Do as many as you need, you won't do any harm.
Thanks Geoff. However on a Mac I can’t right or left click, but I will try again using the PM option which I hadn’t thought of.

BTW the Eroica LX is really flying now, amazing cartridge for the money, seems ideally suited to the Akito.

Yes. The Eroica LX is a great MC for the money, really nice.

Gents I am trying to put some images on with a post but they are way to big when I preview the post
You only get a section of the image with the rest off the page
I cannot see how to shrink them to fit
I am just clicking the insert image button and copying the URL over and it shows in the preview but massive
Any thoughts
Thanks in advance

Depending on their shape they sometimes get rotated especially if your phone etc is of 16-9 configuration. Try making it squarer

If anyone's looking for a "quick and easy" image upload service, maybe take a look at IMGBB: https://imgbb.com/
No registration, no account needed, just upload your image and it gives you a URL. Which you can use here on the form via the [IMG] tag or clicking the image button in the toolbar and pasting it in.
Not sure how good it is and your mileage may vary, but it seemed to work when I tried it.
Steve
I really haven't a clue as to why I can't upload images from imgur anymore. As far as I can see nothing has changed. I browse for the photos, click on copy and then click on my post in the thread. No joy it seems. Help! I've got a phono stage to move on:doh:

Try tinypic, it always works for me. It's free and you don't have to sign up. Easy to use too.
http://tinypic.com/
Don't know imagur but is copy the correct command? Share may be. Then it has the img to be wrapped around it. Ive always used imageshack and never had an issue with them. Currently using flikr as well now as a cloud to save my photos as I want to keep them safe and get them into albums etc. I believe you can use it for hosting but don't know the ins and outs of it.
If stuck, pm or email me the pics and I can add them to your sales thread
Thanks for the replies chaps. I'll give another go on Monday and see where I am then ;)
You could also use tapatalk as they will host too for free and easy from a mobile device

Hi
I thought I'd try this here first because I'm having some difficulty figuring out how to post photos!
20190520_173751.jpg
Edited to say, that didn't work! I'm using a mac. I took the pictures with my phone, emailed them to myself and then downloaded them onto my mac in jpg format.
Can anybody advice me on the next step to get the photos onto a post please? Is there no click and drag facility?
Thank you.
Well that ain't it.
Thanks. I've edited my post accordingly.
If you took pics on phone, just download tapatalk app and use that to come on here. It is very good and easy to add pics to a post. Just dont let them be too big. I usually use a lower pixel size for it as my phone has a 19m pixel camera
If you wish to use a pc, you will need a host site like imagur or tinypic for free ones. Or a host of better paid ones like imageshack
Thank you.
I will try tapatalk.

Just checking!
Flickr still do a free service for small users as far as i know. you need to sign up for one of their accounts tho. once uploaded from your pc using the cloud button at top left side of flickr, you then can open pic there like this
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/u0fvu8.png
and using the right pointing arrow at bottom right, click on share. select bbcode along top like this
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/923/7T89Qa.png
and paste it in the box aos provides(which is the little tree to left of filmstrip at top of the quick reply box
. flickr allows for different sizes to be selected before you copy the code.
Flickr is mostly a pro site but do allow small users free space but it will have ads etc.
Tapatalk will be moving to a subscription based system too, although i think there will be ads if you dont pay the sub.
most are pretty much the same, and flickr is good although i have the pro version.... also imageshack is one of the best but again not free. dont get much for nowt these days EXCEPT our FREE sales section; all we insist on is pictures etc as laid down in the rules

move to imageshack or go whole hog and do flickr if your photo daft .. I use it to store all my family pics especially. I have backups of them elsewhere too, mostly
You wont get nasties with flickr... some dodgy free sites i cant recommend tho. Most folk should have at least access to one if they sell stuff etc or do otherwise with photos.
I have an imageshack account paid for and i only really use it to help folk out. not often I sell stuff tbh.
also if you have a good security system like malwarebytes premium you wont get anything. Ive used it for many years and my pc comes up clean every time..

The issue is that hosting photos on the site slows it down as well as costing the owner more money to run the forum.

Our posts crossed Al - see above. :)
The issue is that hosting photos on the site slows it down as well as costing the owner more money to run the forum.
Just to clarify the above, if everyone 'loaded to the site' with their images, as suggested by Alan (albeit in good faith), it would significantly increase the site's memory usage, which can slow down functionality, and would raise running costs accordingly (due to the increased bandwidth necessary to store the extra data), and so that wouldn't be a sustainable solution.
For the moment, Imgur and Flickr seem the way to go:)

Thanks for all the pic posting help and advice in this thread. I'm still struggling but I seem to be slowly getting there :D

I have opened Imgur and dragged pics to it and then using Firefox managed to get a pic to open on the forum but it is way too big. I clicked on preview and only a part of the pic fills the whole screen. The pic is 560 KB. How do I resize it to fit he forum page? I have spent hours trying

To resize an image on Imgur, hover the cursor over the right upper side of the image and a menu appears. hover the cursor over the downwards pointing chevron and 'edit image' will appear. To the upper right you'll see the dimensions, for forums the one to the left is probably best at around '500', just highlight and alter, the right one will adjust automatically. 'Apply' and 'Save', then you can put it on the forum.

Thanks guys, I retried Imgur after signing up and now seem to have it sorted, may thanks.
