Introducing AudiOH!

Hi,
I stumbled on this forum (from link somewhere else I think) just yesterday, and spent all evening reading Marco's thread on the SL1200/1210 (and the review he eventually posted!) Yes! All 58 pages of it!

Anyway, I was so impressed by the info and quality of the forum I thought I would tag along. I'll put an explanation of my user name in the "Tell us about..." thread.

Hint:
I am definitely not as clued up on the technical aspects of Hifi as many of you are but, even this late in life:(, I am trying to learn what I can:confused:

My musical tastes are eclectic but mainly jazz and classical. I love female vocalists and choral music and am trying to broaden my musical experience. I subscribe to the B&W music club which is a great way to hear new / different artists. That's how I discovered Gwyneth Herbert, fantastic voice and lyrics.

My equipment: Technics SL1210 Mk5G with Goldring 2500 cart, awaiting mods.(Spoke to Dave Cawley yesterday) Arcam alpha 9 integrated, Arcam alpha 8 cd, ancient pioneer Tape deck, and equally ancient pair of speakers on a pair of dodgy stands. Senny HD580 phones and a NAD tuner running of a good quality FM ariel.

Have recently been building up my vinyl collection. The charity shops seem to have stopped selling vinyl records now, pity I have picked up some real bargains from charity shops in the past. Need to get the Technics modded as I have quite a few 78's and hope to acquire some more. Still trying to work out how I can persuade the wife that I simply must have a Graham Slee Revelation phono amp!:scratch:

Hoping to get a GS novo kit in the near future (I was one of the beta testers for the Novo.)

My problem is I have too many expensive hobbies! (Hifi, photography, diving)

Welcome from me too. We seem to have a lot in common: -
not in the first flush of youth - I'm 69
came to hi-fi relatively late and realising how little I know (not that the same applies to you !! :) )
interest in photography and diving but I finished diving a few years ago.
a wife who doesn't exactly share my believe that my set up could (constantly :) ) be improved by swapping one black box for another,
renewing my interest in vinyl. (Techy SL1200 to be received shortly).
As the previous posters said, get stuck in and enjoy, and as some of us apparently have trouble reading :lolsign: , if you could post some pictures of your set up in the Gallery area, they would greatly appreciate it.

Must confess my photography has slowed down a bit since my wife dropped my 24-70 L series lens, OUCH! I'm afraid to ask Canon how much it will cost to repair it!

My diving is on hold too, damn it. I'm on medical suspension after surfacing with pulmonary oedema on my last dive a few weeks ago. Got see the cardiologist next week to make sure my ticker is still working!:steam:

Will try and post some pictures soon.

HeHe! Marco doesn't just "review" his beloved audio items, he's about as forceful as Ivor T used to be in the LP12's heyday :D

By the way, you don't need to spend huge sums on a phono stage, the Croft one is superb for not many hundreds (many of us use versions of this circuit in our Croft preamps) and I bet the Camridge 640P (under a ton) would still be well thought of if put in a box and sold for £500 at least. That's the point, so much audio is sold at a price the manufacturers think the punter can afford, rather than for the true value with fair profit.

That's my rant over for the day.
