Hi, I'm building a vintage system, which, right now consists of Quad ESL 57, Quad II, Quad 44, Garrard 401, Thorens TD124, WT Arm and Hadcock 228 with Benz Glider. Cables are XLO and Kimber. I have a wide interest in music and have been collecting since the late 70's Cd player is a Pioneer pd75 which I guess now is vintage although I have owned it from new! I'm a fan of electrostatics and valves but not to the exclusion of any other technology.

This is the first forum of any kind I have ever used so I guess some learning will be needed :lol:

That's a nice system you've put together. I'd personally be looking for an alternative pre-amp. The 44 is not the most revealing unit. If you want vintage, I reckon a Rappaport Pre 3 (if you could find one) would sound superb in that setup. I have used one with Quad IIs and they work well together. Alternatively, a Forte Model 2.

Thanks for the comments. I thought the 44 would raise some eyebrows! Actually it is not as bad as you might think because it's not quite standard. All switches and all op amps have been replaced with modern high spec audio grade versions, all caps have been replaced and resistors replaced with modern high tolerance items. The power supply caps have also been replaced with Vishay of double the original value and I used the MM card with a nice transformer to match my Benz glider. the CD card has had a mild re design to make it compatible with CD's high out put. This was all done step at a time using two 44 so I could compare the results. I now have a surplus upgraded 44 though! L

I have used a Quad 44 pre with a pair of Quad II valve power amps feeding Quad '57 ESLs to good effect.

The best version of the Quad 44 was the last; grey livery with +/-3dB settings on the 'Tilt' control and extra options on the Bass lift and cut. On this version note the 'Cancel' LED had been removed. Most of the improvement came from a redesigned motherboard.

Thanks for the welcome. Indeed this is the version of the 44 I am using:) Next step is possibly a small sub and external phono stage.
