How do you test a crossover unit ?

Not sure if one of my speakers is faulty

Had some worrying god awful cracking noises coming from my Ram 400 :( very loud , I nearly ejected out of my chair :eek:

That doesn't sound like a crossover issue to me- more likely your amp. If you do want to test the crossover the first thing is to remove it from the speaker (make sure you take a clear note of where each cable connects to it).

What the chap above said. Sounds like your amps got DC on the output.

If there is a short in the voice coil I guess it could cause this fault. However, a 'sharp cracking' sound is often the symptom of the amp severely clipping or the drive unit hitting its end stops.
