Hello Everybody,
now I know a certain turntable is popular around here so to add a bit of variety and because I love them and I am sure many of you do also .I am asking all members using a belt drive turntable to post a picture in this thread for us all to enjoy (well me anyway). to drum up interest and make it a wee bit exciting
I am offering two prizes to the nicest most interesting belt driven decks , one will be the outright winner with a smaller prize for the runner up.
the competition will run until the first of December so that the prizes can be sent out in time for Christmas . You can of course continue to add pictures after
this date (please do) but they wont be entered into the competition.
the Winners will be announced shortly after the closing date and the judges decision will be final.
I have asked Marco and the Mods to act as Judges and I will have no say in their decision also any pictures that I post will not be entered.
there are only two rules,
1, the turntable must be belt drive.
2.it must be your picture of your deck no google images please.
so get snapping people

Home made from MDF, suspension - if it can be called such - is speaker spike sitting in coins of the realm on rubber grommits and then sorbothane feet under the bottom frame. Arm is OL modded RB250 with Technics 205 cart. Motor is from an AR TT. The dust is standard issue in our house.
Its been modified from time to time, there was a stage where it was all immaculate but I like to hack stuff around to keep the hand in.

Thanks :) - I designed and built it. It is the mat I'm using but the clamp has been changed since that picture was taken - it looks like a thin black puck now with a carbon fibre insert and works slightly differently to the one in the picture.

It does height and depth better than any TT I have ever heard. The 301 had better deep bass but in every other respect this is better. I always intended to make a 'posh' version but have never wanted to stop listening to this one enough to bother.
Ha, I can relate to that, I've been working on a replacement to mine for at least 5 years :).

Thanks! Heybrook yes, Hadcock no. It's a Mission 774 with an Acutex 312III STR on the end.
Well Gary is just away and he kindly moved the Thorens indoors for me. Initially is sounded crap!!:doh: REALLY CRAP:scratch: strange as it sounded great in the man cave, but it settled down speed wise and once the firebottle warmed up it began to sound better. Deffo gonna need a better cart. some suggestions for a nice mm with good bass and musical too please. Anyhoo its there for the time being as I cant walk with it... a couple of pics of it and I will find pics of the others later.

Thanks Paul, they are all rather good, but guess 1 will have to go sometime....so I can build another....Gonna keep the thorens so it'll be likely to be the small rouge one , not that it is sound wise inferior, but I have the box etc. and it is almost new.

Thank you :). I think the soft clamp works by gripping the record spindle and this design barely touches it, so they are quite different under the skin :).

I can't really say I've done a direct comparison, as the Morch hasn't had a cart fitted since I moved it to the back. I think the Transfiguration cart is better with the V, though I can't say I found it wanting on the DP6. In terms of handling, the V is pure joy from engineering.

Sorry about the phone picture. This arrived with a cracked lid, no clamp, and no suspension leg tops. I made the clamp (half crown top), Delrin legs and feet and silicon dashpots (as the Mk6), and foam vinyl mat. The arm and cart are Decca London Supergold and Decca International arm at the moment, not the Mission 774 and OC9.
Oh, it's a Mk 1.

It would be a Clearaudio Innovation which, I must admit, charmed me on looks alone although it sounds ok too. The arm on the right is a Graham fitted with a Lyra Atlas and at the back is a good old Rega RB 300 with an old Roksan mm for dodgy discs. Luckily the phono stage has two inputs! I've had the Lyra for two years but only clocked up 320 hrs so the whole shebang isn't used too much.

With all these stunning looking turntables being exhibited I feel a bit bashful about exposing the PT - but in the spirit of support for fellow belters I'll post a wee pic. I've always been more bothered by how it sounds than how it looks (how else could I live with so much skirting board). But maybe I'll nag Mr K to help me with the much talk no action pimping since I'm in the Sussex visiting season.

Wow, some stunning TTs posted on this thread. Strictly I guess this is bending the rules a little as I don't have it anymore but I just dug out some photos of my old Project Debut with DIY tonearm. The headshell was the only thing ready made, everything else was made from scratch with just hand tools.

Well, maybe my turntable could win the prize for the most messy and untidy, but my motto is: don't worry how it looks when the sound is improved.
This brings directly to my personal ranking of audiophiles, that I think today has more motivation than ever: beyond the few guys who listen with their ears, there are many who listen with their eyes. Even more do it with their wallet and best of all with equipments' brand tags. :lol:
Polemics time is over now and I go on describing my turntable as it needs.
It is a Kuzma Stabi S, with Stogi S tonearm and Van den Hul DDT IIS cartridge.
It stands on an Audiotech table completed with two layers of marble: the thicker one is of travertine, the other is of Carrara marble. Between them, and under the turntable wood base, there are silicon spacers. Total weight, comprising the amp placed on lower shelf: over 100 kgs.
Optimizations:
The cartridge has the outer body removed, this improves by far its sound deleting the resonances it causes.
The belt is made with 2.0 diameter surgical silk. Not only the material the belt is made of but its diameter as well proved to have influence for the sound of the whole system.
The platter outer ring and the tonearm wand and weight are covered with teflon band, 0,2 mm thick, tightly wound: this lowers their resonances.
The orignal tonearm cabling is still there but its duties have been replaced by a new one I handmade. It is terminated with handmade solid copper clips and runs outside the wand. It is covered/isolated with teflon and it is made of four 0,15 mm solid core copper threads. It does not bend the way it should to allow the least mechanical resistance to the tonearm movement, but its electrical resistance is so low that greatly improves the sound character of the signal coming from the cart.
This problem is solved suspending the cable to a shelf standing over the turntable, during its travel to the phono preamp input.
The clamp is a 800 g Audiosilente, made of high density grafite.

The turntable is waiting to have a new DC motor with electronic speed control and a new frame arm that will allow the mounting of a second tonearm, a Grado Laboratory Standard Tonearm, that will be equipped with either a Fidelity Research MC 201 or a Grado MCX cart.
Accessories: Ortofon electronic stylus cleaner, Shure SFG 2 stylus pressure gauge and a Capecci Audio cartridge demagnetizer.

Is it too unfair if I post the image of some other turntable that in a way or another recently came in my hands?
The first is an Empire 598 MkII, owned by one of the most famous italian pop and traditional singers, that was abandoned for years in a humid cellar and its finishing was covered of rust. I removed it completely and gave it a nice satin finishing, leaving untouched the parts that could be saved, for a remembrance of the original look of the machine. Those parts received only an accurate polishing. This resolved in a nice contrast between the “golden” and the “silver” parts of the table.

The second one is a Verdier Le Platine, equipped with a Klimo Lancillotto tonearm, that has the particularity of a magnetically suspended articulation, beyond its very long wand, 15 inches if I am not wrong.
Its owner wanted to renew its finishing because of some scratches on it.
It proved very difficult to find an artisan able to do the job in the way it needs. Finally I found a coachbuilder who usually works on vintage cars, Ferrari, Lamborghini and so on, who managed to do a nice work, giving to the look of the turntable an excellent sheen.

Wilson Benesch Act turntable with Act 2 arm. Seriously underrated at the time of manufacture IMO. I now use this with a Ply cartridge, sounds pretty good for a unipivot.
I like that Empire. Compact and simple with a bit of bling just to set it off. I thought it must be from the 'Sixties from the look of it but apparently it is from the late 'Seventies.

Should be from the first half of Seventies. The silver finishing that came out from removing all that oxidation seems to be more adequate for the taste of today.
Here a pic of the turntable in the condition I received it. Visually it was even much worse than it appears in the picture.

Back in the day, this, along with Duals that were leaving their idler roots behind, was quite an engineering achievement in the drive adaptation anyway. The main bearing was improved over earlier models, a cast platter returned in these auto models (previous was the Lab 80) and careful choice of different suspension bushings for the motor kept things quiet. Sadly now, the two softer bushes are sagging a little and motor noise is coming through.

My niece is still using mine!! Works fine after 30 years of use she says. Acos Lustre arm if I remember correctly. Knowing her, she probably has the original stylus in the Shure and hasn't noticed that the little diamond thingie on the end has fallen off.
I keep getting tempted by the ones that come up on eBay. I'm told that two decks are enough. I don't understand that. If there are five systems, surely...........

The LP12 and the audiomods sounded excellent, I was surprised how good it was as I used to use it with an OL1 rb250 and it was better than that
I just stuck the arm and a Denon DL160 on to try out the deck before I sold it to make sure it was running OK, but ended up sitting listening to LPs all day as it sounded so musical

Hi Alan, I am not surprised that the AM out performed the OL1 they are different beasts, Jeff's use of the Rega armtube
enable's him to offer a top notch tonearm at a very reasonable cost, looks lovely on the Linn as well , why sell it?

The Audio Mods arm is very nice I also tried it on a REGA P3 and it really opens up the turntable, its sounded way better than it should :eek:
It also sounded superb on my Gyro deck :eyebrows:

This week I have sold the Linn LP12, the Gyro deck and the REga P3, just decided to have a clear out as I had 7 turntables and they were just stuck in boxes in the loft (Note all Belt drive )
Im keeping my Garrard 401, PioneerPLC590, Techy 1200 but may sell my Lenco 75

Lol - totally understandable! I’ve never really ‘got’ the notion of hoarding collections of turntables as ornaments :scratch: For me, they are simply devices for reproducing music, and so are next to useless when that core function isn’t being performed...
Anyway, IMO, you’re keeping the three best ones! ;)

My J.A.Michell 'Focus One' .. I have owned this for 30 years now, i bought it new back then. I still use it now till i finish restoring another Michell deck but even then he will probably use the 'Focus One' the most. Very highly underrated TT.

Here's my contribution to this thread. My rather bog standard Thorens TD160 B MkII fitted with a Linn LVV tonearm and an Ortofon OM40 cartridge. I am not into heavily modifying things but I do intend at some point to fit an acrylic turntable mat and a Denon DL103 cartridge. That of course will require a new phono stage as well probably by Graham Slee. I did experiment with a Project cork mat but it was awful when compared to the stock Thorens mat. The treble response was truly dreadful.

Not really, it serves no functional purpose other than being something flat and moderately heavy to sit on the inner tube underneath it. I'd thought about making labyrinthine cuts into it to lengthen the path for vibration from the motor to the contact points on the chassis, but never really given it much though beyond that. It's just a 'bit of stuff'.

Sorry Marco, just spotted this. Technically, the Spirit doesn't have a sophisticated stylus, being merely elliptical. Not heard the Royal GM, but the Spirit is really just a carefully made GM E, with better copper coils. It sold for around £900. If you look on the Ortofon.com website, the 95th Anniversary special looks like a pretty tasty version of your's ... a mere 2500 euros from their online shop :)

That Acrylic Matt on the 'Focus' is an old Slate Audio mat. The centre is proper high tolerance machined out with thin acrylic insert inlaid . No two bit all in one machining like you usually see .. I don't think i know of anyone that does this anymore!!

Well it depends.......forget their function if you can and look at stuff from an industrial design or art point of view. I have every intention, when the music room is up and running, to start building a collection of related stuff to have on shelves. Old Quad gear, apart from its function is art, industrial design at its most attractive. I won't go to AudioAl's lengths, but its a definite aim to start a 'collection'. Who knows, it might actually be used from time to time - although a cheap way of doing it would be to buy non workers of course, just for 'arts' sake.
Kinda what I was going to do in my shed room. Once I find a couple of stout gents I'm going to gut it and turn it into purely a stereo room:lol:

Oh dear. I had to smile. My belter is much better for its emergency repair carried out last night - regardless of how much Arthur is swearing at me down the phone for shoddy bodges.
The repair? - Pending "the big pimp" (if it ever happens) I needed to replace the DC input socket which is utterly immovable being a very tight interference fit in the plinth. So I have soldered a couple of wires to the arm-board and run them out through the arm wire slot to a new (better) socket (rather than drill more holes and have it looking like a Swiss cheese). No photos! However, suddenly I'm loving my belter again and not hankering after dodgy DD's
The background is, I have been complaining to Arthur of audible wow for a while now, and assuming it was the old girl wearing out (even though when I measured the wow a few months back, it was well within tolerances). Not only that, but subject to enormous psychological pressure from bloody techies on this and other forums, and having borrowed vector decks like LSD and Vector, as well as SL1200's I assumed I had finally become sensitised to "instability". In fact, the solution was much simpler, and much more real. The DC socket on the back is a fairly weedy 2.5mm mono jack (powered of a Woolworths wall wart). An arrangement for which I must accept the responsibility. This worn jack had become so loose, that the turntable would actually stop as the connection was lost. Prior to that, rather more subtly it must have been losing it, gaining it, losing it and driving the servo nuts. A steady reliable constant DC to the motor board has done wonders for imaging and stability. Who needs Solus?
Why the flaky 2.5mm socket and external power pack? Well, to be fair the socket was high quality but just old now. The arrangement was the solution to the problem which caused me to meet Arthur all those years ago. I bought a PT (with the sexy slider switch) after an audition against the LP12 from Orpington HiFi. with a Linn LV-V arm. The arm was poor, the cartridge a pile of shite, so I bought a VMS20. And got a hum problem which became worse towards the centre of the record. The problem? an unshielded transformer under the cartridges path in the plinth. Since I was local to Pink Triangle at the time, I was invited round to the factory (Arthurs mums kitchen floor). The solution - take the transformer out of the plinth (and in the process lose the sexy slider switch, which sadly kept falling apart - at that stage for a Thorens style knob - later the acrylic triangle). Hence the wall wart and DC socket solution, which has now failed on me, and needed the shoddy bodge.
Funny how these things seem to loop round. :cool:
So the power to the motor was intermittently being cut by a loose connection? The wow must have been of gigantic proportions!
'Shoddy bodge' as you put it, does seem to feature a lot in your audio experiences.

Sure its not 3.5mm -- most of the PT1s I have fiddled with have a 3.5mm jack in that hole round the back -- I use a small block of wood and a hammer to knock them out. Mind you, that is only once I have stripped the PT down to bare plinth!
Are you still using the original Wall Wart transformer? if you can find a decent 9V DC power supply with about 1A current capacity, the sound will improve still further. If you lived any closer I would offer to pop round and sort you out until Arthur delivers...
Back to the original topic, and I am racing to finish my latest pimped PT1 for the competition... should look a little different to the usual. If anyone wants to swap a smoked PT lid for a traditional pink one, please get in touch!

Got the mat from a guy called Blake from the US of A.. he sells them on the Bay Andre. you can have it with or without the raised discs and with or without the 45 cut out. I have the black screw caps but decided to leave them off, as I like the look.

Lol, it didn't fit - not even close! The hole in the top was the right size but the supports to hold the chassis were out by a mile, 19mm too short at the front, no cut out at the rear to let the centre support bar slot into and there were no holes drilled for the chassis screws. A bit of bodgery soon had it sorted though.
There is some stiff competition in the Thorens section but that 125 is sublime.

Thanks for the interest Paul, and from a man with such impeccable taste in turntables! I think you have may have set the bar of expectation a little high for me, but I finally finished the rebuild and it had its first play on Sunday afternoon.
It is based on a black PT1 which I originally intended to strip back to natural ash, but on closer inspection it turned out to be a different fine-grained and reddish wood. The matt black paint was in pretty good condition, so I left it as it was. The interior was going to be my standard 'mini-anniversary' format, with a carbon/balsa sandwich subchassis with mounted motor, and with some Funk Firm vector drive pulleys.
Outside, I didn't think the traditional fluorescent pink triangle would look good illuminated, and had some black acrylic lying around, so thought I would go for a stealthy black triangle. I shamelessly pinched another of Arthur's ideas (the power switch on the LSD) and put a transparent triangle behind it to get a triangular glow. I also had three white LEDs spare, so the glow was to be white, as was the glow under the platter...
Going with the black/white theme, I had been toying with the idea of different coloured top plates for a while, so I thought I would try a white one - now that I have a better mitre saw I can easily cut my own top plates and arm boards.
Underneath went a spare (experimental) 10mm clear acrylic baseboard, with so (rather too bright) embedded lighting, along with my adjustable feet (oak until I get round to painting them). The speed controller and PSU are all packed into one long enclosure, and luckily I had a switch with a white LED power indicator to use on it.
The arm had to be black of course, so my Helius Orion was pressed into service. I don't have an Ortofon 2M black, but a gold MC20 Super goes well with the gold plated fittings. Currently has the standard pink tinted dustcover, but I may get a clear or smoked one made for it...

That it a beautiful turntable, very stylish and beautifully executed , good call in keeping the black ash look they are getting rather rare and the lines on that plinth are very crisp
and sharp, The Helius arm looks lovely on there as well, a classic combination that must sound wonderful.

After replacing the electrolytic capacitors and the trim pots with new, the speed seems very stable and it does sound very good indeed...
The guts look nice and clean as well - lots of carbon fibre, and a bullseye for levelling the plinth with the adjustable feet. I cheat and get the MDF inner plinth CNC cut locally, but the rest is handmade.

@Paul, you are not wrong there; I think it all came right with the Anniversary which looks well put together, but a little too late for mainstream vinyl.

I managed to get it B-Grade direct from Michell (its not what you know but who you know.... :P ) but I need to get a new arm at some point, the RB300 is OK but mine needs a good service. Impressed with the 2M Blue though, cant really fault it at all!

Well the AR was the progenitor of the belt drive TT. Edgar Villchur was a bit of an audio genius.
Saw one f those for sale but think it was over the pond...yes, I like the look of it- very understated.
