celestion ditton re cap advice please.

hi,
i recently bought a pair of the celestion ditton 15xr speakers,i like them alot and have been reading up on how a recap often improves old 70's speakers.
wisely i bought another set of crossovers and had them recapped instead of the original ones. i had them fitted and was very disappointed with the sound,they sounded like they were cutting out when they reached a certain frequency,ie like you had switched the hi end filter on an amp.
the replacement caps are alcap 4.7uf 50v,do they need time to sort of bed in?

yep they will need approx 15-30 hours and they should be well and truly bedded in.

thanks for that advice,i should clarify that when i say they sound like they are cutting out what i mean is they sound flat.

Jamie. Bear in mind that original crossovers regardless of age are not necessarily in need of recapping or anything else. It may well be that your originals are fine and doing exactly what they were supposed to do. Some may disagree, but my philosophy with older speakers is, update wiring and terminals if necessary, but if the crossover seems to be doing its job and all sounds as it should, leave it alone.

good point mate,thats why i decided to buy a second set of x-overs and have them capped instead of the original ones.:)

The original Elcap 4.7uf capacitor on the 15xr is a Low Loss type (marked LL).

Did you replace with an Alcap Low Loss or just the standard Alcap?

If you used the standard Alcap this would account for what you are hearing.

cheers for the heads-up mate,they've taken a bit of a back seat since i got the mordaunt short pageants but will check( i had them fitted by someone).
