Nas - Zyxel 310 - Buffering issues

I bought the above nas a few days ago with the intention of using the HD it comes with for videos to stream to various things but mostly to use my external HD to stream my music to the squeezebox classic.

The video is absolutely fine and streams with no issues but the music seems to keep rebuffering every 2 or 3 songs. Previously ive had an old windows xp computer running LMS on it and never once had an issue. Would it be that the NAS hasnt got enough power to stream continuously? If so i find it strange as video streams perfectly. It shouldnt be a positioning issue as the NAS is now in the same room as the squeezebox whereas the computer was in a different room.

Am i on the right road thinking the NAS has less computing power so isnt quick enough to keep up? Or is it likely to be something else? i.e. its not great at streaming from an external usb drive?

Put the music onto the internal HDD and your buffering problem will go away.
The NSA310 is not designed to monitor and stream stuff from an external HDD, and it takes more processing than you realise.

I have no issues with my NSA310 serving 24/192 music files - it does this without buffering, but all of my music files are on the internal HDD.

cheers for that. Dunno if ill bother as the hard drive it came with is 320gb and the external is 1tb. I know i can swap out the hd but might just stick it back on ebay if thats the case and go back to what i was using.

It's relatively easy to upgrade the HDD in the NSA310, and the reason I run one at home is that it use a lot less electrickery than a conventional computer.
It spins down when not being accessed (in default it takes 15 minutes), when it uses even less electrickery.

When you access it it wakes up quickly.
It also supports Squeezecenter and I run 2 Squeezebox Touch streamers.

actually, just realized ive got 50 quid in amazon vouchers sitting here doing nothing so i may get a 2tb hd and put that in instead.

although i guess copying 11000 flac files over will be a pain in the backside.

Nope!
It's easy.
You need to be able to enter NAS administration from a web browser (there's a setting or two you need to make sure are correct), and you can plug your USB HDD into the USB socket on the front panel of the NSA310 and copy everything over to the NAS at the press of the copy button.
It will take a little time, but you can just leave things running until they're done.
