Welcome to the club Clive! What made you go from bronze to black. I hate to say this but Ortfon SPU's are pretty bloody good as well. :doh:

Not buyin' it Clive - pardon the pun :lol: That's a serious arm you have there and my 'realistic want' cart. The truth is you've opened the proverbial can as that combo is crying out for an external psu and the Mike New ETP. I promise you that it's only then, once you've heard what you've got that you'll be in no doubt it's DONE, DUSTED, OVER, FINITO! (and I mean that sincerely)
Oh! and BTW - I know you dont want to mess with electricity as you put it regarding fitting an external psu. I did mine and like the MN bearing it was no big deal and I'm no modding, soldering guru. If you put a shout out for someone near London to fit either psu or ETP, I'm sure you'll receive more than a couple of good AOSers, happy to oblige for no more than an afternoon of tunes and a couple of beers ;) I'll eat my ETP platter and psu if you are not thoroughly blown away at the end of it.
Finally, My experience with the Shibata is it is fussy about vta, azimuth etc so do take extra time and care (probs slight negative rake), as once it's right you'll be grinning like this :D

Thanx. Henley Designs made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Sales Director who I've known for many years gives me rock bottom trade price.
I've also been a huge Ortofon fan for over forty years.

I understand, but as I've mentioned in another thread, not only are my soldering skills pants, I have absolutely nowhere to put said external power supply. As for the Mike New platter, no way, it's ugly IMHO. I like the look of the stock platter, sad I know.

Sigh, you could have collected a totally damped platter from me for nix!
Also I have to join the chanting in the Power Supply chorus. My power supply (Longdog Audiophile from MCRU) is sitting over a meter away from my TT - no probs.

Have absolutely nowhere to put it. Sadly not an option. Having said that, I'm not experiencing any noise from internal supply. I have done numerous tests with the volume control set high and can detect no issues when deck turned on/off.
Arm, MNB & Cartridge have made a difference, and now I need to draw a line.

Unless I’ve missed it, could you outline what you perceive are the sonic improvements that have resulted from you upgrading from the stock Technics bearing to the MN one? Cheers :)

I'm still running the bearing in and I will turn the Techie off when I go to bed which should have given it about 34 hrs to bed down. (No pun intended)
Having made three large improvements at about the same time has probably clouded individual improvements but overall the dynamics, soundstage and transparency have all made huge leaps. I enjoyed the previous incarnation for just over a year and as you suggested I would, have taken the vinyl source to a completely new level.
Was it worth the investment? Yes.
I have also invested in other areas of my system, all of which have been worthwhile upgrades.:cool:
It's now time to settle down and enjoy my music.

Yes, but it doesn’t matter what I think. In your system, what matters is what YOU think! ;)
Anyway, I would agree with the MN bearing improving the areas you describe. I also found that, after fitting it, the ‘noise-floor’ was significantly reduced, in comparison with that present with the stock Technics one, such that it better enabled one to ‘hear into’ recordings, due to overall information retrieval being notably improved.

My Technics SL1210M5G as it stands consistes of Achromat, Isonoe's with boots, Mike New Bearing, Origin Live Encounter Mk3A Arm, Ortofon Cadenza Black cartridge. (With the Cadenza Bronze as a spare). I am extremely happy with it. Would I like a off-board power supply, Yes but as I have stated many times, I have nowhere to put it. My wife has told me that she will not tolerate expansion beyond my rack onto the furniture in our lounge. I won't go to after market platters, I simply don't like them. There comes a time when you simply have to draw a line and when it comes to my vinyl source, the line is reached.

I'm guessing £7k but not really interested to be honest, dunno why the big deal about asking how much your arm/cart costs as a quick google reveals the retail price anyway, the point I was making is that the arm/cart combo would improve any deck, no?

Yes of course I stack items as can be seen from the photo. I do however take care to stack items in a way that they have the least impact on each other. Cyrus use non-ferrous case-work and are happy to be stacked. The Rega Phonostage is stacked on a non-ferrous case.
The Sky box is plastic, electrically noisy and in the main, unshielded (which is why I keep it the furthest away).
One of the advantages of separating the power supply, is to prevent noise from entering the system, so putting a power supply in a position that may compromise that will not be to the best advantage and would possibly negate some of the reason for the exercise in the first place.

Andrei, now that looks an interesting product and is a constructive suggestion. I will look into it, pity I don't read Japanese (or speak it for that matter). Before anybody gets clever, I realise that it could be Chinese.

Would this have to be earthed to work??
My parents had no end of issues with a sky box a while ago, so much interference on the stereo it was unbelievable!
I ended up cutting a piece of stainless and placing it on top of the sky box, this helped a little. I then drilled a hole in it and riveted a cable on that went to earth.

BUT 99.5% of that noise you are talking about is mechanical, not electrical. The PSU mod is about getting the transformer physically removed from the plinth. Everything else is a happy bonus.

I certainly get and understand the mechanical aspect, but IMO the electrical side is just as important. It is of no use to solve one issue and then go and create another.

Thanks for clarifying that , Also I had problems with a AT120e cartridge causing a hum , with the arm on the rest very slight hum , as I moved the arm nearer the record the hum got louder , Now I have a external power supply the hum has gone
