As the title states, I'm new to digital file play back and TBH I only intend to link the laptop upto my caiman II to play the odd flac album.

Any suggestions.

+1 for Foobar 2000. I've been using it for a few years now, in which time I've ripped about 1000 CDs to FLAC files. The navigation and playback is excellent. The only other one I've used is MediaMonkey which again is perfectly fine too.

I can recommend Foobar as well. The interface is not entirely user friendly, but for playback it works like a charm. It's either that or you can convert your files to Apple's ALAC or AIFF format and utilize iTunes like I do. I've never been able to justify a difference between the two players in terms of sound quality and I prefer the aesthetics and user interface of iTunes much more. Regardless, whichever player you end up with is a good one in my opinion.

Cheers,
Chris

MediaMonkey (http://www.mediamonkey.com/) has a free version, neat interface and good for tagging files, i have no complaints aboout the sound quality either and plugins allow remote control of playback. Website will tell you the difference between free and paid for versions.

I've used JRiver, Monkeys Audio (their format of choice is .APE! - ain't that great!), winamp, and Foobar2000. I only use Foobar now because it has a small footprint and the upgrades are free.

Vox if you've got a mac?

Nope, no Mac, just a laptop with a budget banjo USB lead. I'm not going to start going down the route of audiophillia bullshiticus when it comes to fancy leads and PSU's for the laptop :D. The hard disk is probably ancient and very slow and the ram probably 300ns too slow, but funnily it plays the FLACS to a decent level. ;)
