View Full Version : Which floor stander speakers
Thinking of going for some floor stander speakers, but which? Got around £500 to play with. Sources are Sony PSX 70 TT, Pioneer A-A6 CD player, through a Pioneer D-D6 amp. Thoughts and suggestions welcomed.

There are some revolting looking speakers there Rexton :stalks:
I bought some second hand B&W DM603 S2 floorstanders a while back and have been impressed with them ever since.
Quite a bit under your budget as well>

24 carat gold huh. Isn't that rather soft? I have visions of them slowly sagging and running off the stands. Just a touch is going to mark them badly. For £5,000,000 I suspect I might want something that lasts a while.
Nothing positive to odd this thread I'm afraid. My only floor standers would have been way over your budget - I didn't have to pay for them fortunately.
Any good at DIY?? Frugels should be manageable.

I'll stick with me Tannoys.
Q ACOUSTICS 2050 I
currently about 450 quid and jolly good for the price.
I had my pair for a few weeks and was underimpressed at first.
for a "cheap" speaker they take a good amount of fiddling about positionr a couple of weeks running in they start to sing.
not too happy on a low power amp but anything over 50ish watts will get em singing.
I run mine single wired as the biwire option kills the focus
Personally, with a budget of £500 I'd buy stand mounted speakers. I think your better off with smaller better quality speakers than large lower quality ones.

That would be my thinking too … In fact I always moved on the floorstanders I tried in my system very quickly, they just didn't do it for me. Not quite sure why, but the imaging from the standmounts was certainly preferable for me.
The one floorstander I might have kept for longer was the Audio Physic Virgo II which was a beautifully built and superb sounding speaker but my room positioning couldn't really accommodate the side-firing drivers. If I was looking to buy floorstanders I would certainly look at Audio Physic again.

Agreed. At this price point floorstanders have a lot more box colouration and "boom", leading to poorer imaging too, than standmounts.
