View Full Version : Anyone want to build me a Power Amp?

The Vinyl Adventure

the more i look into DIY hifi the more i realise i cant do it... i have tried to learn but i have grown inpatient, my brain is too full of cameras and pre built hifi!

also the more i read posts on this site and others similar i also realise that very good hifi can be obtained for quite a small amout of cash. especially when it comes to these vaious "chip amps"

so..

the way i see it why not make use of one of you clever chaps out there.... anyone interested in making me a good value and good sounding power amp and also making a few quid?

i only need the completed circuits as i have a mate who will machine me case/cases.

..

if anyone is interested in helping me out then let me know and we can talk in more detail about what im after

Hamish, I am similar to you-frustrated by my own inability having already blown up one amp which was repaired by a fellow AOS member.
Have a read through this thread:

There are a few manufacturers mentioned there who produce modules, so all you are doing is connecting A to B. I like the look of the Coldamp site as they have good instructions on line.
You could put it all together and then get people on this site to look at photos before you powered it up.
I may have a go later in the year but another project is a priority at the moment. :eyebrows:

Not in the UK but some of those low powered Tripath based amps can be had for cheap, probably not amazing sound quality but not bad for the price.

I can't say if the one containing T2050 chips would be great , they used to use those in low power guitar amps

IMO I don't think its worth the price if you only get the pcb modules for 40 quid, just my opinion.

It may sound better or not as good as say

BTW I've never tried any of those so can't say if they are reliable or not, just looked pretty cheap

Cheers stan, that's the sort of response I was looking for! It is going to be partnered with my 7520 as a pre amp!

Cheers for the points Leo, I shall refer to them if stan can't find anything for me!

Stans going to be the best bet if he has anything, keep your fingers crossed eh;)
Actually browsing around for myself now to see what route to go, if I had more time I'd build you something, I've given most amps away I've tried over the years

Hi Hamish

I have a pair of assembled Crimson power amp modules that only need a descent power supply, they offer 40 watts into 8 ohm each, they are fully built and tested working to spec, but as I said will need a good power supply. I suggest a 30-0-30VAC 330-500VA with split rails, ie: 2x bridge rectifiers supplying 4x 15,000uF 63V resevoir caps, I am lookin for £50 for the pair to include carriage if in the UK, PM me if interested. Oh should have said they are around 20 years old and were highly regarded in their day, Crimson are still going strong with Brian Powell at the helm and their range of amps today cost £1000's.

Yeah fingers well crossed! ... Stan seriously, cheers that's really good of you! ..... Toes crossed too (I have freakishly long toes, I can actually cross them)

Paul sounds interesting, although I would need someone to do the work you mention... I will get back to you if I'm in the unfortunate situation that stan can't find something for me!

I thought Hamish said that DIY was beyond him?

I have a good stereo Gainclone (point to point - no pcb) LM3886 based chipamp that I would let go at a very good price. If you draw a blank PM me.

Errr I thought that I stated this clearly in my post, it was an offer of a pair of fully built and tested power amp modules, what is your problem Puffin ??

Cheers puffin I will let you know either way on that! I have looked into this gainclone thing and I do understand it's better than the tripath option - and based on how much I ike my bantam tripath that can't be a bad thing

Can you guess what it is yet? Oh go on do tell.

Well phase 1 is to get the Wolfson dac chip fitted in my Beresford dac-that should be complete in a couple of days. Phase 2 is to get my Squeezebox upgraded. Various options being considered at the moment.
All cheap improvements so I can save for a decent amp later in the year.

You can't get more simple than a Gainclone for a diy amp, its what got me started off , unless your not bothered about getting into diy and just want a plug and go option

Whoa there. To a non diyer, talk of Transformers, Bridge Rectifiers and 15,000uf is a bit baffling IMO.

No offence meant.

Forums sometimes eh, people take thongs Soi bad sometimes
I would like to have a go at a gainclone, I did just about manage to build that cmoy kit so I'm sure I would manage it, and I think I will try based on what yous have said... But at this stage I'm 100% more interested in what stan the man has to offer!

Mike
29-07-2009, 20:40
Looks like that bit is sorted out... excellent! :)

Anyway, here's my offer Hamish. Or anyone else for that matter.

If there are any kits that take your fancy, but you don't feel 'up to it', so to speak. Send it to me and I'll build it free of charge!... There is no 'con' to this offer, I just love doing it.

However. Full blown 'DIY' is a very personal thing, it does exactly what it says on the tin!... Sorry, but I'm not prepared to do the design work, nor am I'm saying I could! ;)

Buuuut.... Kit's, yes. I'll put them together just for the sheer fun of it. For nothing. At all! :)

Cheers...

Hi Hamish

I have put the odd kit together and am not that far away - happy to help out if you like. All my kit is home built - except the mac mini and Caiman anyway.

Cheers

Hi all ye all powerful Admin Team, :)
Can a mere humble pleb member like me  make a suggestion that we (you  ) start a NEW sticky so that members' offers to help fellow members with builds or repairs, FoC, at cost or otherwise :smoking: ,is made into a 'Sticky' such that the information is readily available for future reference as required.
