Morning all...
I've just inherited a Quad 405-2 power amp, but when I replace the Quad 306 which I currently use, there's a big difference with the volume settings between the two. For example:
Quad 306 & Croft Micro 25 Basic, bi-wired into Quad 22L's - volume on the Croft rotates to 2/3 o’clock position for decent volume level
Quad 405-2 with Croft 25 Basic bi-wired into Quad 22L's - to obtain the same volume as the above, I have to rotate the volume on the Croft to 7/8 o'clock position
Does this big difference with the volume settings between the two sound correct?
Cheers

Hi
From the information I have the 306 was indeed more sensitive 0.375v for 50w output ( although rated to 70W ) vs 0.500v for 100w output for the 405.
I would check the cables used for each amp, firstly are they the same ? or different. If they are different cables, try using the cables used for the 306 then on the 405 to see if sensitivity changes.
Unsure if your 405-2 has the 4 Pin Din or RCA which could if using the 4 Pin din, be difficult to directly swap as the 306 used RCA.
If using the 4 Pin Din could be worthwhile checking pin 1 is left + and Pin 3 is Right + and Pin 2 is Gnd. Looking at the plug from the front Pin 1 is on the Left then following sequence around to Pin 4 that was not connected.

Many thanks Chris, appreciate the feedback :)
I can confirm that the 405-2 is a 4 pin din model with the push/spring loaded speaker connection, so its a different connection method altogether from when the 306 in my system. I've had to strip back some surplus QED Silver Anniversary cable to test the 405-2 and connect it to the Croft with a 4 pin din to RCA lead. Although I expected there to be some differences, the variation between the two volume settings just didn't seem right to me. To clarify the two set-ups:
The 306 connected is to the Croft with Mark Grant G1000HD interconnects. The 306 is connected to the Quad 22L with Mark Grant Van Damme Black bi-wire
The 405-2 was connected to the Croft with a basic 4-pin din to RCA interconnect. The 405-2 was connected to the Quad 22L with QED Silver Anniversary cable with the speakers bi-wire linked
Long term, I plan to have the 405-2 serviced, RCA sockets added and proper speaker binding posts fitted...
Cheers
