Hello All,
I have a linn LP12 a suppernait 3 and some bi-wired linn keilidh's,it all sounds crap.
I listen to assorts,trying to keep to vinyl if possible,as am am old and bitter and twisted and set in my ways.I do have a cd player its a Linn Mimik,as you can see my system is a bit like me,old and not pretty sounding.But I have recently got back into listening to my music again,you know life, divorce and all that, get in the way.
I would love someone to advise me on an obvious upgrade,without being too brutal.I was thinking about a new Amp,but after taking my turntable into a London shop,I was advised that a £2,500 naim amp was the obvious choice.Yeh! right.Surely you don't need to spend anywhere near that amount,I was thinking more like £500,but maybe I am kidding myself.I must say after reading some of the forums on here,it makes me think I should get rid of everything a start again.Can anyone advise,please.Thanks

What are your tastes in music and in what way is your current system failing to satisfy?

Hi Peter, welcome to AoS. I used a pair of Keilidh's for a number of years, with several different amps and never felt that they sounded crap. What is it about your system that you're dissatisfied with?

Yes, you'll find bags of useful info and advice here.

I'd say flog it all. Buy a Technics SL-1200 turntable a Creek Destiny 2 amp and a pair of Tannoy DC6T speakers. It'll sound great!

That's the easy way out. There are loads of options, you need to point us towards what type of sound you like and tell us your total budget,

I listen to soul,rock,funk,dance a bit of classical,everything really.I am also stuck in a 70s time wharp.

Ah,budget.I don't want to blow grands,thats for sure,which is why I thought,little by little.An upgrade hear or there.I thought an amp would be a starting point,but to be honest,i don't have a clue,hence I am asking the meisters of sound,i.e.You lot!.

We need a full run down of your hi fi items , Whats been done to your TT , what cartridge are you using , what cables are you using ? Have you tested each speaker with a meter ?
What dont you like about the sound you are getting now ?

Hi Peter

When we moved in 2003 my system sounded horrid. Assumed it was the room. I bought some Saras on Ebay to replace the Isobariks - heresy !
It wasn't the room

Fortunately we had mains problems and after having those fixed I had some dedicated, unswitched mains sockets for each piece of kit put in.
Earth was renewed - was barely in the ground with hardly any connection from cable to rod in the ground
Sound improvement was immense
Then I started on Kimber mains cables, not believing at first then upgrading again and again, ultimately to some Ultimates from MCRU and dropping in a PS Audio P10 on the way :)

I like the Linn Keilidh speakers. Had a ''1993'' model in 2007 and liked them very much!

We had nice results using the Keilidh's with a Chinese tube integrated. It had 4 big KT-88 valves and ran VERY HOT! That is all I remember.

Another one was the Roksan Kandy MK3 Integrated.
