Abis tonearm

Very interesting, Andy! It has a kind of ‘Dynavector DV-507’ look to it, such as that belonging to Martin T (shown in the 4th image from the left on the AoS banner).

I do like it, and it’s not stupidly expensive either. Trouble is, where would one get to hear it…. I wonder if there are even any reviews?

It may look like a Dynavector DV-507 but it is not a bi-axial arm. Also, it may have been designed for the Ortofon SPU with integrated headshell but it is not obvious that such a combination would achieve the correct cartridge/arm alignment, since there is no adjustment for overhang if the Ortofon cartridge is used.

I'm not sure I would describe the SME V as a 'low mass arm' and would be interested to know what the effective mass of the SA-1 is for comparison.

I have just checked, for an arm with effective length of 228mm, the overhang is correct at 18mm (18.225mm) but the offset angle is completely wrong at 33o (it should be 24.2o).

That said, I do like the look of the arm.

I don't know either Barry. Times are a changing and the high street shop has moved into dealers lounges and demos are more akin to postal chess but require a your cc number and CVV code first.

I paid more than that buying my Ortofon RS-212D, totally blind… £2100 to be precise ;)

Sometimes you just have to take a punt on these things… Thankfully, it worked out well!

I paid £12 for my seventies RS-212. That included the Goldring G99 in plinth that it was mounted on. Boot sale purchase quite a while ago, but it was still a bargain back then. :)

Very odd - as you say, I've never heard the SMEV described as a low mass arm though it will be compared to this. Considering they make such a play of effective mass it seems doubly strange that they don't state what it is for this design!

Well I suppose 10.5g is low mass when compared with ~20g of the Abis SA-1 arm.
