As I've mentioned I have a new bike... a lovely little Honda Rebel 250...this is now my 4th Honda and they really are built well and this one is an actual 'Made In Japan' model... they are superbly finished and the most reliable bike ever....:)

Now she is not the fastest bike on earth but to get me back into riding she is just perfect

I have already fettled her a little bit....I have got rid of any corrosion/pitting from her chrome and she now shines very nicely, I have also sorted out the rear brake arm which was just touching the right hand exhaust a little... just needed a washer on the pivot arm where it passes throught the frame bush to take-up a little play, and now the rear brake operates just as it should, a simple and FREE fix... !

She has had a thourgh clean and polish and now she looks a different beast to the one I purchased

I have also installed new NGK Iridium Spark Plugs and she goes even better with them... a cheap upgrade.. !!

So APART from your hifi items what is your most treasured possession?

Mine is the above Honda Rebel 250 Bike... I love her to bits.... she has much less value than my hifi system... but has the ability to thrill MUCH MORE than the hifi system... If you bikers know what I mean.... :eyebrows::eyebrows:

I have a weakness for early Hondas, such as the Benly models from the Sixties. It all came with seeing/hearing them on the way to school. Outperforming those unreliable British bikes, the ones that left little pools of oil everywhere.
The lovely metallic blues and reds were my favourites. I am of them tempted to buy one, but owning something that old could be a money pit.

You'd find a Benly a bit dull by modern standards. Even the Benly Sport wasn't very quick. A 305cc CB77 would be more worthwhile.

Kawasaki S3a 400. I bought one new in 1976, same colour, it was the fastest mid sized bike on the market and sounded brilliant. (yes it was quicker than the Yam RD400 and Ducati 750 and Guzzi 750 and 750 Triumph Bonneville and Suzuki GS750, which had the same top speed, but lacked the acceleration to keep up) :)

Nice, reliable bike which was also very comfortable to ride. I travelled many, many miles on this bike, I even took it over to the Isle Of Man to watch the TT one year. 4 speed box and 6 volt electrics could be a pain and I appreciate the styling far more these days than I did when I was 18... ;)

I'm not surprised Geoff they were built to last, those mudguards for example weighed a ton I swear. The previous owner had fitted fish-tailed pipes with minimal baffles so consequently it sounded as if it developed several hundred horsepower... :lol:

There's not much that you couldn't race on a tuned RD350!!! was it an LC? Welcome to the 2 stroke 'Power Cliff'...nutter machine :eek:

I was confined to a CB250 at the time...probably for the best in the long run ;)

My current beast is a Triumph Tiger 800XC, my neck, back and license have lead me to a less sporty vehicle (I used to own VFRs), very nice to cruise around on at legal speeds, and plenty of grunt for the occasional blart...and I've always wanted a Triumph...that works! ;)

Always liked the look of the LC in both 250 and 350 guises but couldn't afford one, so I went out and bought a used KH250 to see what all the fuss was about in 2 stroke land. I loved the sound of that thing but it was going to kill me, so I wont back to 4 strokers and bought myself a Super (wet) Dream... :)

They were a loony bike to start with and mine was rather quicker than standard, due to a few tasty mods! :eek:

I had a mate with a Suzuki GS750 that he reckoned was the business. I'd ridden his bike and knew the score, so I tossed him my keys and said go on, thrash it!
When he came back, all I could see through his visor (open face helmet) was a huge grin. He got off and just said "F**ckin' Hell". He couldn't believe how quick it was.

I eventually put the 'Low Rider' (posh for short arse) seat on the Triumph, as the 800XC is pretty damned tall, and my inside leg is 31"...a heavy bike, in rush hour traffic, on tippy toes is no fun at all!!! ;)

Haha! You are so correct! When i bought it, i took the the train to Helsingborg, bought the bike and drove it home! Some 650km!!!!
But it's as good a time as you can have legally with your clothes on!

When you get older, you just switch to a four stroke! :)

Nah, that's boring looking and ’styled by numbers’, compared with Geoff’s earlier, rather gorgeous, 1970s Kawasakis - real man’s bikes. It’s the same with today’s cars too - they all look the same (designed by computer), and so lack ‘soul’.

The Ducati is better, and far sexier, but then it’s Italian….. ;)

Lol… They have a certain panache though, and sense of occasion that, IMO, no modern motorbikes can replicate. Just as with audio, technology doesn’t always make things universally better! ;)

...and another thing, I could work on this. In fact, back permitting, I could strip it down to its component parts and rebuild it, I wouldn't know where to begin on a modern machine. I'd probably need a laptop for starters... :D

I had one of these for a while. A hell of a lot of fun. There were three power variants, a lower power Euro version, a 40bhp Jap market version and a full power model, which is the one I had. These are tiny, about the size of a 250 but have a 400cc 16v DOHC four carb engine and go very well. Handling is excellent and the engine is a peach, with smooth, usable power coming in early and revving cleanly up to 13,500 rpm. Mine used to pull 12,500 in top roughly equal to 125mph. I remember giving a bloke in a Ferrari F40 a big surprise on a quick road.

I had one of these some years ago. Interesting bike the SZR 660, quite quick, possibly the fastest production four stroke single sold in the UK. Strange thing was the tiny power band, 4000 to 7000 and not much below. It all came in a big rush. Handled great though.

I've been on hols for the last week... the only 2 things I miss from home is my hifi and my bike....

I was going out on the bike tonight but I've only just remembered it's Friday and that is definitely not the night to go out.. so will probably have to be Sunday now... I just can't wait... I'll have to be patient... :(

Oh damn it I didn't get a chance to ride the bike today...

Hopefully tomorrow I will be firing her up and taking her out for a blast... can't wait... !!!

My gate hinges are currently going through a re-welding process that will make it quicker to take off, and back on, when I go riding...so I MAY have to delay my ride for a couple of days... what a nightmare... I wan't to go riding NOW.... :eek:

I've also just purchased suitable oil to give her an oil change so I may as well do the oil change before I next go riding..... I guess....

I am just impatient to get out and ride her again... ooooh the suspense....!!!

Al that's exactly what I am thinking..... winter is now very near.... a VERY DARK experience for me to be honest... I have a form of 'Seasonal Affective Disorder' (SAD). So the approaching Winter months does not hold much of an excitement for me at all.. !!

Therefore I will try to ride as much as I can before that time... and I will try to ride throughout the winter when the roads allow...

Thanks for the 'heads-up' tho Al...

I am just pleased that someone is "looking out for me".... cheers so much... !! ;)

Al you really should try to get out on the BMW R1100Rt, I believe it is a superb machine...

The Street Glide.... well It just looks like sex on two wheels.... If I could have got a leg over it I would have loved to have ridden such a machine, but my legs are 'far too short'... nightmare !!

The only Harley type machine I have ever ridden was a Buell, I think it was a Buell 1125R..

The Buell was absolutely superb but the dealer just could not come up with a decent enough deal with my, mint, Moto Guzzi as a trade-in, ...so unfortunately the deal fell through..

However I now find myself wanting MUCH less than I did from a motorcycle in the past and my little Rebel 250 seems just about right to brush-up my riding skills and to get more confident in riding.....

I already love the little Rebel 250... I think it is typical Honda, in that it seems pretty much unbreakable,... it seems to have a 'very' tough engine and gearbox.. and it seems to be built to last ;)

I simply love Honda's.... I find them simply the toughest and most reliable bikes on the market

I have now owned 4 Honda Motorcycles and they have all been 100% reliable and as "tough-as-old-boots"....

Honda motorcycles are VERY highly recommended by me... :)

Whatever the cost I am sure you enjoyed every minute of the ride on the trusty Rebel.... !!!!

I think that equates to about £1.98 per mile... certainly a little bit on the high side but I am sure you would have had great fun getting there.. !!

I THINK my expenses will be around the following:

Insurance: £200 (and that's with NO 'no claims', as my NCB had lapsed!)
Road Tax: : £37
MOT: £30

I don't expect to do a huge mileage in the first year of my Honda Rebel 250 ownership so lets say just 1,000 miles.. that would make the following:

£267 per year....devided by 1,000 miles, equates to 27p per mile,.. and there is NOTHING to touch that sort of low cost ownership... !!

Long live Honda Motorcycles.......:D

Alan I am probably one of the few peeps that would consider that very sexy... as far as I am concerned any flying machine is a real adrenaline rush.... certainly when I was hang gliding it was a massive rush... very shaky hands, which is always a good sign of enjoyment

The ONLY other thing that I have found that can do that sort of rush is motorbikes... !!! hence my recent purchase..

The only reason I have not been out on my Rebel is that my gate is having a little modification doing to it so that it will be easier to take the gate off when I want to get the bike out... without this little mod to the hinges it is very tricky to extract the bike from my courtyard...

I think Colin is finishing the fabrication to the gate hinge tomorrow so that will make it much easier to get the bike out of my courtyard... :D

It's been a nightmare fabricating the change to my gate hinge so that I can get my bike out more easily but the upshot is that, at the moment, it is virtually impossible to get the bike out at all... !!

Don't get me wrong I am very grateful that Colin is fabricating me a new hinge so that I can get the bike out much easier in the future.... BUT::::

I am 'chomping-at-the-bit' to get out on my bike

It looks as though I will have to be patient... I think the fabrication will be completed on Monday or Tuesday... I simply can't wait... It's a nightmare when you have a new toy you cannot use... :(:(

Helmet had to be binned and the leathers were cut off me at the last trackday. I had 3 operations but the bike was fine.

That's a nice pic of you and your bike... is it an SV 650?
Thanks, I'm as ok as I'll ever be. At my age injuries don't heal like they used to! The bike's an SV700S, it has a bigger bore, a full race exhaust and makes an extra 10bhp. I bought it like that, only £1200, and I spent about £1000 on suspension and brakes. I've red lined it in 6th at Anglesey Circuit, about 140mph, I think, so getting it stopped and turned is quite important!
I find road riding frustrating, so prefer tracks, but age and cost limit me somewhat. I injured my back skateboarding about 35 years ago, and find sitting upright on a cruiser painful, a racing crouch is more comfortable! Awkward by injury.
I used to tour Europe with my wife on the back, but she has a bad leg now, although if I can find something she can get on, even a big scooter, I'll buy it, as we both miss that.
Anglesey Circuit is in a nice location, with the sea and Snowdonia in the background, just a very long way from Plymouth. When I lived in Manchester it was easy, I did about a dozen trackdays there on the old circuit. the new layout is very good, but more challenging, at least for me. Still pretty though.

Richard I know exactly what you mean that injuries don't heal the same as you get older... even though, 'touch wood', I havn't had any bike injuries.. I hope that doesn't tempt fate.. ;)

Your bike sounds as if it was a complete bargain.. I know the SV range is supposed to be very good indeed and I simply love V-twins... it's about the only thing I wish I could get in a small Honda.. while my little 250 parallel twin in the Rebel is a superb little engine I just wish it was a V-twin....

The seat height isn't too bad on the SV's either but it's just still too tall for my 'short-arse' little legs !! that's such a shame !
It's my second SV. I had a Fireblade in between but highsided it, so went back to an SV.
If you replace the rear suspension linkage "dogbones" with a longer pair, you can drop the seat height. 2 bolts. And as the seat base is plastic, it can be narrowed and the foam re-profiled. I altered the foam on mine, as the backs of SV seats dip and give me back ache
I am always amused by people who sell their new bike because the pegs/bars/seat don't quite fit. How do they imagine race teams cope? I always alter mine, it just seems the obvious thing to do. Mind you, being ABLE to do it helps, especially if you have a lathe! :)

I think the Fireblade is a tremendous machine, I have friends with them.. an amazing bike... and a Honda, which I love...

Unfortunately I do not have access to a lathe... damn it... !!

However Colin has almost finished the fabrication of my new bottom hinge for my gate and hopefully finishing it off tomorrow... then AT LAST I can extract the bike for a ride... I am 'chomping-at-the-bit' here... !!!! :D:D

While I have time tomorrow I will give the Rebel a quick oil change, just so then I know it has been done... ;)

With the new paramotor being a 4 stroke the economy is fantastic compared to my old 2 stroke :yay: I can get an hours cruising on under a litre and a half. Well chuffed.

I am desperate to get my bike out some time very soon..

Hopefully tomorrow, Thursday 2nd, I will be able to take my bike out.....

I have every confidence that the littel Honda Rebel 250 will be fine out on the road.... I just love Honda's and I believe they posses the most reliable engines out there.....

I will reveal all once I get the bike out on the road.... Can't wait.... :D:D

Well I can report that the gate hinge fabrication has now been completed and fitted to my courtyard gate and it now takes just seconds to lift the gate off it's hinges and to replace it

I can now get the bike out pretty easily... at last I can go riding... Sunday if the weather is dry...

I took the Rebel out for a quick spin tonight.... what a trill... I don't care that she is only 250cc.... what she does in spades is give you a real thrill.... she is just FUN to ride and even though she is not the quickest thing out there she is just FUN, FUN... FUN

I think the oil change was necessary as the old oil was quite black so the new semi-synthetic oil in her now should last a thousand miles or so... I will probably replace at 1,000 miles just so she is well protected

Hope you changed the oil filter too Bev. Glad you're enjoying the bike. Give it a month and you'll freeze on it! :)

Geoff.....believe me or believe me not but the Rebel does NOT have an oil filter... amazing but true.... apparently quite common on bikes... !!

I have some pretty good winter gear which I used on my previous bikes so I HOPE I won't freeze to badly over the next few months... :D

I've just checked. That seems to be the case, but it does have an oil screen that needs cleaning every other oil change apparently (like the C90 Cub).

Well I now belong to the Rebel 250 forum and there is no mention of any oil screen etc... just change the oil every 1,000 miles and apparently you are 'good to go'

Yes Geoff there is apparently no recommendation to change the foil screen during normal maintenance, so just change the foil at 1,000 piles and all should be good

If I know Honda engines there is very little attention needed to them to keep them in tip-top condition.. so an foil change every 1,000 piles is all that's needed...

I believe Honda engines are some of the best out there, and some of the toughest there are...

I have owned 4 Honda motorcycles and they all possess the toughest of engines and gearboxes

So the little 250cc in my Rebel I trust 100% ... it is based on an engine from the 80’s so it has proven to be as tough-as-old-boots and a real gem.. I don't expect any problems from it as long as I keep the oil changed regularly... :D

I will just have to wrap up over the next few months to keep out the cold... I have a jacket, made by Belstaff, that has an insert for cold weather and a pair of rather expensive Rukka trousers which have an insert for cold weather so I hope to keep pretty warm over the next few months....

Hi Bev, have a look around for some heated grips, I've got them on my Tiger and they make a hell of a difference for winter riding...and you won't need such clumpy gloves :)

Oh and some heavy duty chain wax...the winter roads are not chain friendly

I was wondering about some heated grips.. they certainly sound nice and toasty for the winter months... I will take a look into them... and I hate wearing huge winter gloves as they have no feel to them, not like my summer gloves...

As far as chain wax is concerned I am using Wurth 'High Perf Dry Chain Lube'

which I buy from my local Wurth shop.. I've used this for years and I really like it and it doesn't spray everywhere either

I now use it to lube other parts of the bike as well.. eg. gear change mech, rear brake pivot, clutch actuator etc etc

It is a very clean way to lube your bike and it seems to stay put for longer rather than normal oil being flung everywhere... :)

Tip. For anybody using bikes in the winter. Go to a Chandlers or anywhere that sells boat stuff and get some marine heavy grease to cover vulnerable metal bits. It sticks like mad and really protects against the winter road salt and general crap! Good on spokes etc. and wipes off in the spring.

This weather is winding me up at the moment as it's far to slippy out there to get the bike out... :doh:

I don't think anybody is tinkering with your posts Bev. I did notice the "peasy" mistake myself the other day, so I think it may have been there to start with. Can't say I recall any other spelling errors in your typing.

Bev it can't be done without leaving a visible trace so I am sorry but no one on the team has done it, because its not possible. Being honest, even if it was, we are busy managing the forum, trying to prevent issues so why would we create them by doing what you suggest ? Answer we wouldn't.

The only way a screenshot could be altered would be via something like Photoshop and there would be localised areas of disrupted pixilation which although not necessarily visible, could soon be detected if need be (unless you have something like military spec image tweaking software. I'm not saying such a thing exists mind you ;)).
Geoff I can assure you I don't possess anything like Photoshop as I have no need for it... I can assure you my screenshots will be 'untouched' if I find it necessary to send you one at any time...

Whenever a mod edits a members post on AoS the name of the mod plus the time and date of the intervention appears in the bottom, left corner of the post, as yours would if you edited it yourself. Mod activity is also recorded on a log in the Admin panel so admins can check that their mods are performing their duties correctly. On my forum I am one of two admins who can edit a members posts without leaving a trace on the open forum, not that we would ever do such a thing without explaining our actions of course and besides, our activities are also recorded on the mod log therefore we can check each others activities. You need to be absolutely certain of this before you begin throwing accusations about Bev...
