Tour of Britain

Managed to get a few snaps as the Tour passed close to home today. The speed of the main Peloton was astonishing. They were clocking close on 35mph up a slight incline. They'd just ridden up a 2 mile hill which was 15% in places and not one of them looked to have broken into a sweat. Some were even riding one handed whilst glancing down at whatever electronic devices they were holding in one hand as if it were a ride in the park.

Sky chase cars brought up the rear in style driving Jags! Loads of police motorcycles (we counted 22) too for co-ordinated advance traffic marshalling which was very effective.

...it got about 0.5 secs TV coverage on the Tour de France, where it was due to support Froome on the time trial, but as he'd crashed out again by that point it was used to accompany Geraint Thomas, who didn't feature, so nor did the car! :doh:

I've not seen it so far on La Vuelta, but given Froome's still in one piece it may get a showing on the final time trial stage, it's no use for anything else as it can only carry 2 spare bikes on the roof rack

The special ops team had it on display at work, a splendid looking thing...if a little impractical as a true support vehicle, but it does sound nice ;)

FYI The Dogma road bikes were also perfected using the JLR wind tunnel at Gaydon, it's nice to see a bit of successful British engineering again...

Who gives a damn who the shareholders are, the designers/engineers are British, and so are the vast majority of the 30k employees in the UK...;)

Isn't just, gives a sci-fi feel to the stage if there ever was gonna be a stage in the service tunnel,
it'd be great to see how each of them can find their threshold and sustain it without feeding of the crowds,
or telemetry to tell how their main rivals are doing, it really will be the race of truth.

p.s. I really like the Jaguar Sky livery. :)

I do a bit of cycling (metal pin in my foot has put an end to football/running), and I treated myself to a new road/cx bike last week, a Cannondale CAADX (pic below, too good for me!)...last night I went out with my mate for a quick 20 miles, with me slipstreaming him.

Got back absolutely knackered, and checked the cycle app...an average of 15mph! FFS La Vuelta covered the 50km in the first hour of yesterdays stage, on an incline, with another 150k to go over the mountains...those boys are machines!

rock solid go anywhere bike,not the lightest or most responsive i ever owned but my days of 'heads down, balls out' are over,
leisurely gentle rides is the order of the day now.

p.s. which is which with the Sportsback and F-Type in the photo's?.

Hi Andy, I'm coming from the opposite direction, I bought a £250 hybrid about 3 years ago just to see if I'd get into cycling, now all the lads I cycle with at the weekend (about 10 miles to the pint/pub) have upgraded to road/CX bikes, so I had to join the arms race just to keep up...;)

Apart from being about the weight of one of my previous bike's wheels, the CAADX's handling is great, and the 'Sammy Slick' tyres are an excellent compromise for roads, green lanes, canal paths etc. I don't like being restricted to smooth tarmac, and a full on race bike would kill my neck and back, so the slightly more upright position of a CX really helps...just googled the Surly and it looks like a very similar tool, very nice indeed!

R.E. The Jags the ones in the original photos, and the one that is used as the standard Sky team support vehicle is the XF Sportbreak S (a very nice car), the F-Type RSV is a one off promo vehicle done by the special operations team at JLR. It's only really practical for time trials (if that) as it can only carry a couple of spare bikes, and perhaps a water bottle at best...but really, really quickly!!! :lol:

Will, meant to comment on my last post how nice your bike is,Cannondale make light but strong frames, ilike them. :)
yes mine's is a CX bike too but steel tubing, would've like disc brake mounts on the frame,
i feel rim brakes when going off road/cycle path where mucky conditions make them graunchy.

The modified F type so she can take my bike somewhere. I'd rather just cycle there !
I started on the bike as my knee was wrecked doing Aikido. Used to be a sprinter, 100 and (old) 220s
You'll get there.
I'm currently on my mid 80s Holdsworth. Need to work out what my Giant TCR 0 needs to be road worthy again - most or all of the drive chain after 10,000 miles odd
