View Full Version : Aikido copper clone pre
This fabulous amp is too good for what I'm using it for at moment so will see if anyone has an interest in a swap for something Turntable - ish. Made by Tubehunter as far as I'm aware, it has high gain and 2 inputs. Chassis is copper, all hard wired and a clone of the "Aikido" DIY/PCB design using 4 off SYLVANIA 2C51 gold pin that in themselves are rather expensive. (also have more sets of valves to go with it) This will give most pre's a run for their money. I have shellac'd and waxed the cheeks since getting it as you'll see in some pics. I brought it back to this country from Luxemburg in its home made crate which I still have I think. A rewired rb 250/300 would be ideal. 280 plus postage straight sale

Do you have internal pictures? And how are the 2 inputs switched?
I have an RB250 rewired internally, fitted with a Linn style plug in the base (with stock Linn external cable) & and RB300 end stub and counterweight if that's of interest to trade?

Ah, I guess toggle switch on front changes inputs (just saw power switch on back :))?
Cheers Richard, but I am currently using a 250. fancied a full rewired 300 as it is a drop in replacement. And yes, the switch on front toggles the inputs.

Grant, do you *actually* realise what you’re letting go?
Duncan builds kit to the highest possible audio standards (using superb electronic parts), as he enjoys building stuff. When he sells it on, he charges ONLY for the cost of the parts used. It bears no reflection whatsoever on the sonic ability of the item concerned.
Therefore, what you have there is an active valve preamp that could easily compete with commercial items costing up to £3k! I kid you not, so think very hard before you part with this, as you’ll struggle big time trying to replace it, especially with the budget you usually have available to spend on gear.

Yes it sounds and looks great. I have 3 full systems plus extra stuff at moment and wanted to reduce a little. I got it from the community and won't sell it out with. I won't be upset if it remains with me tbh. Duncan,s builds are as good as they get. It also has nice set of valves in now.

A very good choice of valve in this Grant.
Maybe if you quoted what the gain and input impedance are, plus the type of volume control used, you may get more bites.

Good questions, but I aint the man to answer them :eyebrows: . I have tried it on 3 power amps and it worked fine with all. I am now sourcing it from another pre then into a power amp and still I have no problems. It sounds great to me and others. I guy brought his Eastern Electric pre over and tried a bake off....his £600 pre was easily seen off.
In fact it was so good on comparison I am going to do a complete amp change indoors and see how it performs. ..oh and her indoors likes the look of it. Shockerooney

Dunno tbh.. no adjusters bar the volume control that I know about.Not sure gain would be that much of a factor. I had 2 TT's going into a tis wide open making it effectively a switch box then in to the NAK CA5's phono stage . also in the ca5 are connected a cd player and a pc via a sabre dac. the volume of that is turned up to about 1/3 and then into the Clone. clone into Cambridge p500 and out via van damme to tannoy's (E11). volume at 9 or 10 oclock and it sounds fantastic. It is not really the average wire up but boy does it sound good. No hum to talk of either.:D

Due to its delicate nature I have decided not to post this. I thought I had the crate for it but cannot find it. I might also point out it cost me 230 to get it and the valves in it failed and I spent another 100+ replacing them.
So unless there is someone wanting to pick it up I'll leave it there.
