Methinks this could run and run!

My personal bete noir is the US use of nouns as verbs: to author a book; to medal (i.e. win a medal); to critique something; to gift .......!

My absolute hate is anyone answering a question or starting a sentence with........
'Yeah, no ...........etc.

FFS do people mean yes or no? Is this one of the latest ways to dumb down the language? I can't stand it :steam:

I had to restrain myself from using capitals on this one,

 Alan

Just 'wake up and smell the coffee' Alan! ;)
I don't like that one. Yes, I know it's popular here, but I can't help that. :)

'The light at the end of the tunnel', well it's about bloody time somebody turned it off.

'Window of opportunity'. They (whoever they are) can go and jump right out of it!! What's wrong with just plain old 'opportunity'?

Solution, when used as part of a sodding "mission statement", in fact all forms of business speak, including the phrase "business speak".

Not a quote but I hate how everything now is greeted with hoops and hollering ,like we did as kids playing cowboys and Indians, the term "bugs "for anything and everything ,bacteria or germs or insects or even faults in the system are termed this way.Going further the shake of the hand near the face [award acceptance speech, you know what I mean] in mock tearful reaction. Not exactly along the lines of the original post ,but have the same sort of gist to be accepted.I hate Americanisms in OUR language

'Key' when used in a context other than opening a door.

This is 'kinda' (sorry :D) relevant: Have you ever been in a conversation where you suddenly become aware that every phrase you utter ends in 'right'. It's so bloody embarrassing especially as it makes one sound like a complete moron. Of course, once enlightened it is almost impossible to stop without dunking your head in a bucket of water... :mental:

That'll be me then :)

Two of my latest pet hates - first is the expression 'Drill down' - I think there is a rule that says it must be used at least once per show on 'Dragon's Den'.

Second is 'Show Stopper' - used to describe a problem that must be overcome before a project can continue. The urge to kill people who use it is frighteningly powerful.

Drilling down into this issue revealed a bit of a show-stopper.... RUN AWAY...RUN AWAY!!! :door:

Working for an American company you get that stuff all the time. I mean you sort of expect it from the yanks - they were born like that. It is when the English employees adopt it that it starts to sound ridiculous.

'And the winner is................................................ .............................' followed by a 5 minute pause that is supposed to heighten the tension and suspense but is just f**king tedious

Two times and three times. What happened to twice or thrice!!!!

Not sure if this is correct but it seems to have been in much more use since The Fugees version of Killing Me Softly. I suppose it's quite ironic that it is killing me....

Here's a couple that get trotted out far too often...

'Singing from the same song/hymn sheet'...what's wrong with the word 'aligned'

'Ball park figure' - Once when asked to provide the said 'Ball park figure', I responded with '415 foot!'...'What'? came the reply...'that's the distance from the home plate to the green giant (back wall) at the Wrigley Field baseball stadium' was my response. 'If you want an estimate then ask me for one' FFS ;)

Two from me: -
I'm loving it (or 'the colour' or 'the programme' - fill in your own words).
The script for the TV show 'Pointless' - I don't watch it 'onest, it's my wife  - which is the same every show, only the names of the contestants is changed, other that that not one word is changed from show to show. "And now it gets even more exciting" makes me want to scream!!
Dave.

Sarcasm is my only real form of humour. However there are a lot of people who simply don't get it. Shame.

I once worked with a Yankie lawyer who used to send stuff to the court with a covering letter saying that the enclosed was for "issuance". I told him that it was not a word and all he had to do was forget the ance and add an e to issu. Nothing changed:)

At the end of the day, when all's said and done, in the final analysis, people feel compelled to use intensifiers. Words, phrases, repetitions, volume etc to make their content (or themselves) noticed.

Quantum leap or jump. Said to imply a huge or large change, whereas anyone who knows anything about quantum physics will tell you that a quantum change is a discreet change from one state to another; there is nothing between the two (e.g. in tossing a coin there are only two states in which it can fall: heads up or tails up). The size of this change can be small or or it can be large.

I also detest all forms of hyperbole in audio reviews (or indeed in posts made by members). I get very suspicious of phrases such as "it blew my existing ****** away (or into the weeds)", or "I simply could not believe what an enormous improvement it made", or "the difference was as clear as day from night".
