Just looking at how much the variations available bring the price of an RA Powerblock up to silly money!

Basic ? Powerblock £500
Upgrade sockets. £205
Ultra Purifier. £240
Clarity Mains. £89
Mains Zapperator. £99
Full Silver Wiring. £1200
Deep Cryogenic
Treatment. £51

Total £2384. For a mains block!

I don't know about others, but I'm thinking that sort of dosh would be better spent elsewhere?

Yes. I'd recommend a lobotomy for a few pence less.

Over £30,000 for a 3.6 metre pair of speaker cables.

I bi-wire - so that'll be over £60k, please.

I used to quite enjoy perusing the RA catalogue but it's gone totally :mental:

That's over the £100 threshold for free delivery though, so not too bad.

You are quite right - I'd not thought of that.

In a free country we can also criticise absurd pricing and the people who are prepeared to pay it too....

What gets me is that even without all the fripperies added in the 'basic' mains block is still £500

I bought a mains block from Russ Andrews a few years back and that 'only' cost £100 - I wonder if this is essentially the same thing at five times the price?

The price of things that I can knock out in two minutes is crazy. But....the more you pay the more its worth of course. Some one has to make a penny or two.

Whilst a basic 'PowerBlock' is indeed £500, RA do a whole range of cheaper mains extensions - the PowerBar starts at £89, and is a very different design.

Personally I wouldn't buy any of them but only fair to mention this for sake of accuracy.

Whether you spend that or over 2K you will also need to factor in your choice of mains cable, none of which are included I believe.

I suppose it is easy to knock the things either don't appeal to you, or have price tags that seem unrealistic given your perceived value of the said item. I bought some Yello power cables years ago, they were about £30 per metre with standard IEC and plug. Since that time the RA range has increased and we are told that the products have advanced (either due to construction, materials or topology)

I could not justify the cost of the products sold and would, and have looked for cheaper alternatives. Whether they work as well or work at all is an unknown. However there must be satisfied RA customers as he is still in business. It's all subjective and what is a must-have and justifiable purchase to one is a ludicrously expensive piece of frippery to others.

As Duncan Bannatyne is fond of saying, "That's ludicrous..." :stalks:

Mine came with a Kimber mains cable and the luxury of a plug attached. I'm quite happy with it. In a back to back it was audibly better than a number of standard 'B&Q' style blocks although the difference was slight. What additional performance benefits can be had by slinging another three grand at the thing I can only guess at.

Deep cryogenic treatment for Russ Andrews would appear to be the best option. If I was still at the Chemistry Dept. in Oxford I could have arranged for enough liquid nitrogen to deal with him.

Oh, I don't know. To be fair a chest freezer would do the job.

It's only a catalogue so why turn it into slagging off RA? To suggest putting somebody into a freezer is distasteful to say the least.

It was a take on the earlier post, not a personal insult to anyone. All meant in good humour, so please don't read anything into it ;)

This forum seems to be in the middle of a humour bypass at the mo. I get told off for mocking tea drinkers and now this.

Only po faced seriousness allowed apparently. Life is funny, people are funny, RA's prices are funny. Can we lighten up a bit?

There are some things to get really serious about in the world, stuff like this is lightweight.

Well I'm sitting here "po faced" and I was going to say something serious, but I just can't be arsed! ;)

Please correct me if I'm wrong here, but back at the tale end of the 1970s into early 1980s RATA use to sell early type Kimber ICs via dealerships... I was a Satursday boy then, this must have meant a percentage to the middleman selling RATA products (notice I'm using the old name for RA). I bought into the early Torlyte platforms which, I believe which came about from Pink Triangle's use of Aerolam ali in the construction of its TTs. Some tried aerloam as equipment platforms and it seemed to work so Russ brought out his Torlyte platforms in competition to aerolam and these were sold at a reasonable figure, I bought mine at that time at about £30.oo a piece. Today these Torlyte platforms are about £186.oo with NO middleman in between to take his/her slice of the overall cost. Some of the pricing does seem strataspheric which only the really money loaded amongst us could possible afford but, hey, its a free world. I, personally, would put my money towards a good, well designed, mains regenerator, equal in cost to one of Russ's single interconnects with the woody bits at either end (?), this surely would be more beneficial than all these zappers etc., you tell me?

I'm tempted to try out the £25.00 plug fuse, 60 day home trial etc., to see if there is any difference from the likes of others such as MCRU. Posting it back would not cost alot but postage from RA and then returning this particular fuse would bump up the overall price.

The days when I had my parents' wind up gramophone and pile of shellacs where the days and a real chic puller to boot... didn't care then that a gramo party on the beach was not healthy for my shellacs though.

I like the idea of the deep cryogenic treatment. Presumably when technology as moved on in a few hundred years you can dig out your RA Powerblock and use it on your hovering hi-fi system or whatever.

Sadly this is simply untrue.

If it was true, my listening room would currently be wall to wall hookers with a coffee table in the centre for a mountain of Charlie that Alberto Tomba couldn't ski down......

Come on folks, its basic marketing. Have something really expensive in your catalogue, someone might buy it, but its only really there to make the mid range stuff seem cheaper by comparison. If you dont have a 'top line' product your bread and butter products dont seem as good value.
