I/c extension

Could anybody on aos help me out please I am soon to be the proud owner of a dd jvc turntable and was wanting to know if anybody knows how I can hook the tt up to my amp bearing in mind my amp is 3 metres away from the tt and the I/c leads on the turntable are hard wired any help/suggestions would be much appreciated cheers:scratch:

If you can solder, yes.
The other option is to use a pre-amp (phono stage) and then you can add the extension between this and the amp.
I would be a bit worried about the small signal travelling 3m, depending on the cable you use.
I use a 5m cable between my pre-amp and my amplifier with no problem.

I will assume your amp has an inbuilt phono stage and the inputs are RCA. There are Female to Male RCA interconnects out there and that would do the job. However I share Cagey's concern that this is not optimal. First, the signal from the TT is so weak that it is susceptible to interference and has to be shielded. The added interconnect would also have to be shielded. Second, a weak signal over a long distance with a connection in between is do-able but could not really be called 'best practice'. An additional phono stage is a bit of an extreme solution, but a dedicated one would likely be better than an inbuilt one.

Depends on the cartridge. You need to understand what the optimum cartridge capacitative loading is. Most phono stages use a 150pF loading and rely on the interconnects to bring this up to around 250pF. There are a few cartridges that work well with up to 500pF but most like to see between 200 and 300pF total. By increasing your leads to 3m, you'll roughly end up with around 360 to 380pF which might be a little on the high side depending on cart used. An offboard phonostage as mentioned could be used (I'd recommend something like the Hagerman Bugle if on a budget). If your cart works well on 300 to 400pF, 3m ICs are all well and good otherwise you could end up rolling off the higher frequencies too much.

tbh, the sound degradation if you use one of these will be very small. And if you use a good cable for the extension then it may even improve the sound! ;)

btw - those JVC dd tt's can be very good! Which one are you getting?

I've used these in the past and I can't say I noticed any real degradation in the sound. At the price of these, surely the first thing to try?

Klotz MC5000 is a low capacitance cable (IIRC 55pf/m).
Therefore a 3m cable made of this could work.

Hi jerry I am hopefully getting the qly 3f my good friend got me it for an early Christmas present and has a/bd it against a rega rp6 and according to him there's not a lot in it and considering the price difference I am sweetly blown away counting the days now:)
