What would you buy?

I am looking to very gently get back into vinyl so to speak, my budget is sub £100 and seconda hand / very old is preferred. Either something to upgrade over the next year or 2 or something to start with and trade up.

Any suggestions?

If you fancy something which looks more 'classical' there is this lovely AR The Turntable here (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AR-the-Turntable-1985-/111445011706?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiF i_Turntables&hash=item19f2a3ecfa) however I'd expect it to go above a hundred quid in this condition. There are plenty of mods for these which raise the already good performance significantly...

Its a £100 for the turntable, was looking at that AR, dare i ask would an old Dual be better than some of the stuff today as a start otherwise, i know they are not upgradable though. The reason for asking is i listened to a Pro-Ject Debut 3 and was completely unimpressed, sorry owners.

the AR type thing is something that appeals, in the old days i had a Revolver with a Linn arm and AT440 cart or something similar cant remember exactly, still not sure why i even slod it either.

It's a rarity these days, especially in this condition. Direct drive (in fact it shares its motor with the SL12xx series) plus it sports ADC's superb ALT1 arm and a Stanton cart with a bran new Jico stylus ;)

The Revolver and Linn combo is excellent. I loved mine.

My current Dual 1019 / AN IQ2 comfortably saw off my TD125 / SME / SPU set-up; the Dual decks really can do justice to a decent cart.

Lenco GL75 or GL69 if your lucky to find one for sub £100, might need a bit of tinkering and a new plinth but this can be done as funds permit.

231321374582 is an AR XU minus arm and modified to take a Rega arm for £102.

191301123997 is an AR EB 101 that needs a counterweight and a bit of work on the plinth. The motor pulley is loose but would just need the flanges nipped together a bit. £80 inc. delivery.

181506611831 is a Sansui SR 222 MM V. They look really smart and might benefit with a better arm. £118 inc. delivery.

If you're not in a hurry, I think I'd wait for a Dual 1019 to show.

I have been offered a Dual 505-2 that needs a new belt and cartridge for £20, would i be wasting my money?

Tried to get the AR on here last night but was out bid, could have stretched the extra £20 or so.

The dual's a good one rated well in its day £20 grab it belts are easily fitted and readily available.

Well for £20 you can hardly say you're being robbed.

Years (and years) ago the basic pecking order for decks was the Dual 505, Rega 3 and Linn LP12. A whole raft of other perfectly good alternatives tended not to get the attention they might deserve.

Have to admit, never really liked the look of the 505. But again, for £20…

Linn Axis is a decent deck for £200 or less

I had an AR The Legend (I think) with an AT arm and a Denon DL110 cart sounded fantastic but I think I prefer the Technics SL1200, the AR TT was a bit bouncy and you had to be wary of footfall near it.

footfall at least isnt any problem it will sit on a mezzo soprano stand, and the floor of the lounge is concrete under the carpet, my last house had wooden floors, that was a nightmare

Thanks for all your help guys, i am now almost there, i picked up the dual and i have ordered a new belt and a Rega Carbon Cartridge to go with it. Amazing what can be picked up on ebay, the total should be under £40.

I will however continue to look for something better in the meantime, i already have some Rogers DB101's do you think a Marantz PM66SE KI would glue everything together as a starting point?
