Your best vintage score?

For my part, I felt really lucky to find my Kenwood Model 500 amp listed on Glasgow gumtree. The Kenwood Supreme series are really rare in this country.

I am green with envy of this (http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=611904) chap in Belgium!

He just found the ultimate NOS Supremes in local hifi shop: Kenwood 700C pre and 700M power amps. Simply stunning.

What's your best vintage find? And please post a pic if you have one.

Probably the NOS Goodmans Triaxiom drivers I picked up the other day for £60. Others that spring to mind are mint AR4x speakers for £5 & Thorens TD150II for £25.

I've since put 4mm speaker terminals and an IEC mains inlet and outlet connector on it. Oh and a remote volume control :eyebrows:

I think for me it has to be a random eBay purchase of some JBL L110 Monitors.

Amazingly good for £100 or so. :)

Seemingly unlimited musical enthusiasm and joie de vivre, but they justified their "Monitor" name, too, with fine neutrality. The mids really were bloody good!

A Leak TL10 amp with GEC KT61 valves, mint and in full working order, for fifteen quid. That was twenty years ago now. Some Lowther Acoustas with 2 vintage PM6a drivers, and a PM7a driver, working order, thirty quid. And my Akai speakers which cost an £80 donation to charity and £80 in diesel to collect. Although not sure if that was a good score value wise since for some bizarre reason they don't fetch that much in the open market.

Best vintage score were and probably still are these two. The Technics SL-210 and the Marantz 2220B.

It's a great setup, but sadly not one I'd be keeping. I plan to upgrade my turntable to the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon sometime before the end of the year. The Marantz is a great receiver/amplifier, but I feel it is too warm at times. I am always hoping to run into a Pioneer SA-7100 one of these days, but if I don't; I mind end up keeping this amp when I get a brand new pair of GoldenEar Triton 2 (or 3's) speakers. I was going to use it until I upgraded it to a Leben amp.

I don't know about best but my life could never be the same without my cherished Quad '33'/'303' & Ferrograph 'F307' amps.. Could not imagine living long term with anything else.. It not a matter of Hi-Fi it's a matter of being in love.

The 'expert' found the same and when he put his metre across them, found there was no resistance in the er....coil. So obviously, they were junk. He was amazed to be offered £50 for something he knew was rubbish.

Got them home, plugged them into the Stereo 20 and of course, they worked perfectly. Didn't even blow the amp up:lol:

I actually didn't feel too guilty about this. The labels are big enough on the back. He should have been able to have a peek at the technical specs of the beast.

Keith Monks dual turntable record cleaner £5 gwo,AVO VCM 163 valve tester also a fiver ,got it from a skip site ,had been out in the rain for a week and the paintwork had come off but still worked. Pioneer SX1250 receiver for a tenner,had a hell of a job getting it back to the car about 300 yards away[it weighs in at 65lbs].Pioneer PL630 dd turntable also for a tenner,had to do some work with speed varying ,plenty of info online -really dirty pot.Ferrograph 307 for a few quid sold for 30-40 quid ,didn't like it and it didn't like Quad esl 57's.Ferrograph S1 speakers £5 sold for about £50 not as good as Quads no emotion dry/boring.£25 for Thorens TD 150 with Armstrong amp from bootsale.Turned down Burman guitar valve amp for £15 -seller said it was working but I offered £10 as i could see one El34 was gassed .The Pioneer gear were a few years ago,the others were 10+ yrs ago when ,as U-boat skippers would was a "happy time",before people checked everything on their mobiles or just plain did not want to give the old stuff house room,before they knew it had value.Also offered £3 for a Creek 4040 when seller wanted £5 and would not budge.Plenty of bargains but plenty of times I've made expensive mistakes/been ripped off ,which I'll post later with other bargains when I remember them

I have loads of older gear that i have picked up over the years
The one that stands out to me is the oracle delphi i bought from a second hand store in the mid nineties, it was head shell less, with a tonearm at the time i'd never heard of, and £350 was alot of money , anyway i bought it and was told to collect the head shell the next week
There was a tube soldered into the leads that appeared from under the counter once I'd paid..
I collected the head shell (with a cartridge attached a couple of days later)
I took a few years to identify what i had bought, and it was suprise after suprise
The tone arm was the famous fidelity research fr64 silver wired,
then its turns out the cartridge was a kieski blue, it took sending in a unknown cartridge to be rebuilt to discover that one
The ' tube' was an audiophile products transformer, which at the time there was nothing on the net about
It turned out to have been wound by kondo and mine was the very expensive wired with silver version
I still have all of this kit, the transformer is very rare, and so neutral sounding,
What was at the time quite an outlay, bought me some really good and very rare kit.

the tweeters were blown in the speakers, I guess from some dick caning the amp.
also, the foam grilles were long gone...my wife called me a c**t for blowing such a huge amount of dosh on I quote
"old shit"!!
the tt and amp are still going strong...non of your cap replacement in my neck of the woods!!!
could not be arsed with the speakers and sold em to a vintage nut friend for a tenner....after doing some research and realising the value i sobbed.
