View Full Version : Help with issues using an Albarry MCA11 head-amp

I recently bought a MCA11 (second hand) from The Audio Works to use with my Croft Micro 25R. I'd considered various step ups, but decided the flexibility and reputation for being more resistant to hum made the Albarry the way to go, especially at £300 rather than full price. However, so far this has been a frustrating experience.

Issue one is that the Albarry has excessive gain in my system, which didn't surprise me much as the Croft was already causing issues in that dept. - so I initially didn't worry, and sent the amp off to Glenn for the "R" upgrade, and he addressed the gain issues perfectly, at least via my mm cart and digital. Vinyl replay via this set up sounds absolutely wonderful and there is only the merest trace of tube rush with the volume at full. However, plug in the Albarry & a Denon 103R or a Cadenza Bronze, and anything beyond 9am on the vol is off limits. I've ordered some attenuators - but from the Albarry specs, I see it's giving 30db gain, and this seems rather high compared to most sut's etc.?

Secondly, wherever I position it there is a lot of hum coming throu, but it sounds oddly mechanical (I thought maybe caused by using powerline for internet, but nope, thats all unplugged & no change). I've tried every possible combination of ground wires and nothing gets rid of it.

Third, and the most alarming - if I turn the Albarry unit on or off, the EL34's in my Snappers flash for a couple of seconds, along with an audible thunk throu the speakers. No item of equipment has ever had this effect before, and as the unit is battery driven, I would assume it would be designed not to be "always on"? Again, no amount of repositioning etc makes any difference.

So I emailed Albarry, and got an out of office reply until sept 22. As I didn't fancy waiting that long, I tried to return the unit to AudioWorks. They set it up with a Rega tt and amp......and somewhat unsurprisingly, it failed to repeat the fault, what with the Rega amp having no valves it was a largely pointless exercise imho. There was still a hiss above half volume, but "thats perfectly normal" apparently. At this point I asked for a refund, and was told in no uncertain terms that as it worked on their system, it was my tough luck it didn't in mine and no refund would be offered. He did say he'd send it to Albarry, but as we've already established the good gentleman is away, that seemed pointless too, so I took my little red box and left.

If you discount the issues, it sounds great & I would love to get it settled in and working, so if anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them, especially as I seem to be stuck with it & theres no chance of speaking to the maker until late sept. Even if its as simple as "It doesn't match your system"....at least then I could sell it on with a clear conscience :)

Hi Matt,

Sorry to hear of your troubles, and I’m also rather surprised and disappointed with the reaction you got from The AudioWorks. Did you speak with Larry?

My view would be that regardless of the fact that the unit works in their system, the whole point is that it works in the customer’s system, i.e. yours. If it were my business, I certainly wouldn’t be happy in the knowledge that one of my customers had bought something from me that they weren’t entirely delighted with.

Anyway, my advice would be to contact either hifi dave and/or trio leo, both of whom post here and have lots of experience with Albarry products. Dave sells both the head amp in question and Croft equipment, so he should be able to test the issue you’re referring to and offer some advice on the matter.

Hope this helps! :)

Marco.

Dave certainly crossed my mind, but it just seemed a tad cheeky as I didn't buy either item from him!

And to be fair to the Audioworks, they did offer to send it off for inspection, but the fact there won't be any resolution possible for a month put me off that course of action. I'm hoping the attenuators will help, I wonder if I'm simply "overloading" the mm stage in the croft? As I say, the actual music which emerges sounds great! If that doesn't work, well at least I have the clearaudio mm & the croft to use until I can speak to Albarry :) And frankly that sounds so good I sort of wonder why I'm worrying about anything else!

Well thanks to the advice offered I've repositioned the croft to the side of the Albarry rather than above and thats reduced the hum issue dramatically, and I think to a level where the addition of some attenuators will sort it completely. The wife's reaction to the new arrangement I'll deal with about 5pm lol!

On top of that, the flashing issues are also sorted, again following Al's advice, and seemed down to operator error......muting the pre amp before switching does the trick.

Should have just asked here first.....nice work & many thanks :)

Hi Matt,
I think your Albarry was picking up hum from the transformers In the Croft pre. I found that using screened power cables to all of my equipment has also reduced/ eliminated thumps and pops through the system when turning items I and off so you may want to try this aswell?

Hi Matt,

30dB does seem an awful lot of gain to put in front of a typical MM input.
Rather than attenuate the output I would have the gain of the Albarry reduced a lot, that way you would be reducing the hiss, improving the susceptibility to hum pickup and improving the overload margin.
If I were around the corner I would offer to do it for you, it is almost certainly just changing two resistors. Perhaps there is someone technical on here that lives locally that could do it for you?

Powercords are normally all wireworld electra's, but to reposition things I've had to resort to old freebie cables. I had tried going two shelves up, but shifting sideways is a far greater improvement. Hopefully getting the WW's back in will help, but that requires a little head scratching to get 'em to fit :)

Yes, getting the gain lowered does seem like the best bet, but for that I'm happy to wait until september & get Albarry to do it, for now I'll just have to think before switching sources :) The fact that I can stop worrying about my valves is plenty for now!
