The above link shows a video of the IsoPlatMat removing a massive amount of vibration. Direct contact with the platter is will the remove the ringing in the platter. It definitely gives the needle more chance to reproduce what is in the groove, without external interference.

Hmmm! Interesting I can think of other uses for a motor out of a vibrator that's for sure :lol: Not sure what this proves though, other than the IsoPlat mat absorbs vibrations at one particular frequency. Also, these are pretty macro vibrations in comparison to the micro vibrations caused by the stylus/groove interaction. I would say a better methodology needs to be followed to convince me of the advantage of this product.
That looks pretty interesting. I had no idea that steel could damp sound. How much do these creations weigh? I do like the objective test, but have you also a with-and-without listening test of music? As Paul says micro-vibrations are important too.
It isn't just steel. It is a sandwich of a vibration deadening compound between two metal sheets. It is very clever and absolutely works.
It's the same principle I used when designing the RubiKon chassis, except I used aluminium plate.

Andrew showed me the rubycon, constrained layer damping, it does work. Excellent work Mark.
Thanks - yeah it does work. As you say, constrained layer damping (done properly, not as some manufacturers claim to do it). The SDS mat also does it properly and should be very effective at stopping platters from ringing. The aluminium armboard I now use is made in a similar manner - developed from the RubiKon which was itself developed from the sub-chassis I designed for my own deck.
(P.S. It's RubiKon as opposed to Rubycon - but then I didn't come up with the name, just the design ;))

Unlike a lot of the pseudo-science engineering you encounter in hi-fi, constrained layer damping is a well known, and thoroughly researched, technology that is extremely effective and widely used in industry (unlike ebony discs for example).

HI Kevin, the turntable had a rubber mat over this, the holes are there so the rubber drive belt can be pulled over the motor.
It looks like it works really well, but I assume that it's a fixed frequency vibration you are using?
Is it possible to do the same demonstration with a variable frequency input?

I just made that demonstration as I was exhibiting at a hifi show and wanted to show how the IsoPlatMat removed vibrations. I simply put a wiring block on the end of an electric motor which was glued to an old Technics deck and ran it full speed. I sell Sound Damped Steel to some hi end hifi manufacturers where it is built into the players and amps, it's used on generator power pack skids and enclosures on oil rigs to prevent noise being transferred onto the platform. Pump and compressor manufacturers use it to make the units quieter. It removes vibrations across the entire audible frequency range. Here's a couple of videos which may help.

Is it possible to have it in a stainless type finish? I am thinking of trying some under my amps, which sit on my speaker stands - if the cost is reasonable ;)

Hi Andrei, take a look at this web page http://www.sounddampedsteel.com/hifi.html there are links to independent reviews form HiFi World and other sources which have listening tests. The SDS constrained layer damping removes micro vibrations too.
