Is the Micro Seiki DQX-500 any good? Likewise the Micro Seiki MA 707 Tonearm. I've always liked the look of these turntables, but would appreciate some experiences and/or opinions before I am tempted to part with any cash. Actually, I am in secret competition against Neal, to see who can acquire the greatest number of old record players in various states of (dis)repair!

Back in the 80's we took a couple of DQX's in p/x. They look great but sound average. IMO

The DQX-500 looks rather plain in comparison with the DQX1000 - that is definitely 'of its time'.

Thanks for the comments - I'll resist the temptation.

If the price was right, I'd buy one right now. They don't sound special but the looks are worth paying something for, a bit like the Oracle. I have a couple including one with the shrink-wrap still on. They sound OK but the looks are stunning.

DDX is better than DQX- no quartz lock and it sounds fine if you put a good solid SME arm on it.
I had a SME IV and Lyra Argo on a DDX1000 a few years ago and it sounded great - good as an Orb or P9 if different.

I've also had the baby 500 and thats a decent TT let down by the arm.
The 707 is pretty poor with a flimsy plastic shell and bendy armtube. Looks nice though.
The TT would certainly be worth re-arming.

I skipped the DQX-1000 and went for the DDX-1000 instead. The ability to fit three arms is helpful, but I prefer to fit one at a time. That still leaves me with a drawer full of arms . Maybe it is time to get rid of some of them.

The MA-707 arm is so so. The MA-505MKI is the pick of the crop. I even rate it above the astronomically expensive MA-237.

A fascinating classic deck, must be worth a snipe at £156??

Not that I'm after The Grand Wazoo's job, but thought I'd raise this thread from the dead as there's a DDX-1000 just gone on ebay... looks like a project, but someone might be interested. They are certainly lookers. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RARE-Micro-seiki-DDX-1000-DECK-PROJECT-/270612971728?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Consumer_VintageAudio_RL&hash=item3f01ca40d0#ht_500wt_896

They don't play tunes though as I remember. The bass quality was *totally* dependant on the support they're on.

I spotted that but he doesn't say what's wrong with it. The thing might not have a motor...

The Planar 2 of the period was more musically satisfying by comparison, yes..

But as you keep telling me, decades have passed since then and set up and supports have significantly improved since then.

Indeed – and this is the danger of forming conclusive opinions of anything solely from past memories. Periodically, these things must be revisited in a different context in order to get a proper handle of what's *really* happening! :)

Btw, the Decca has arrived. I doubt I'll get a chance to listen to it though until next week.

I don't think it has the control unit. He doesn't show it, or mentions it in the listing. So I reckon he doesn't realize its needed to operate the deck.

That would make it quite a 'project'...

My friend had a DDX-1000 many years ago, it was on that beast that I mounted his Dynavector DV-505 arm, from which my love of the arm originated. He also had Grace and SME 3009-II arms mounted. Fabulous deck and as I remember it sounded pretty good for its time too.
