Great 'actorr' in my opinion and very good director but, IMHO, he could come across as a bit of a *.........* when pontificating on things in general. On the whole I liked him and admired his thespian talents but, away from the stage, much less so.

True, but he directed a few really great films. A Bridge Too Far being one of my favourites. I read a while back he was in a nursing home and was a bit past it so not a surprise but still a great shame to see him go.

Yes, shame he's gone, he was always a noticeable presence in his movies, but I agree with the above.

Did some great films, especially war films ... In which we serve,gift horse, Dunkirk etc, and his portrayal of the ultra correct RSM Lauderdale in Guns at Batasi. Through to the likes of the difficult role of John Christie in 10 Rillington place. RIP Dickie

Sad news indeed. His portrayal of the characters 'Pinkie' in Brighton Rock and of Christie in 10 Rillington Place were brilliant: creepy but brilliant. He was a more than able film director as well: with Ghandi, Oh What a Lovely War and Jurassic Park amongst others to his credit.

Agreed off-stage he could come across as a bit of a "lovey", but he will be missed by film lovers.

What with loosing Lauren Bacall and Robin Williams last week and now Richard Attenborough, it's been a bad couple of weeks.

The last three nights when I've been picture editing the Express we've had Robin Williams announced 45 minutes before deadline, Lauren Bacall, 15 minutes before and Richard Attenborough, who always was the kindest and most considerate of people when ever I have met or worked with him over many years, he had the grace to give me a full hour and a quarter. Proving the point about his kindness and consideration :) Now lets hope it does stop at three.
