View Full Version : Bass gone...help (please)
Sounds like I've lost the bass through one of my Celestion 66s. (I was playing the 12" of French Kiss by Lil Louis, so that'll teach me to play bass-heavy House Music on a Sunday)
I've switched speaker cables around, so it's clear that it's the speaker rather than a problem with the source or the amp.
What's my next step please? Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
John

Had the same in one of my PMC speakers. Checked the continuity on the coil ( if that's the right term?) and found an open circuit. It was as cheap to replace as have or try and repair.

Could be a cap or resistor that's finally failed on the crossover. Check all connections to and from the crossover to the driver.
Thanks Mike and Joe
Looks like screwdriver and multimeter day tomorrow!

First take the bass driver out and check it with an AA or AAA battery and connect across the terminals, + to + on the driver. The cone should move forward noticeably, if not, there's your problem, it's likely blown (although I have seen lead in wires come away). If it's OK, then start checking the caps on the x/over and the bass connections to the x/over. By the way, the correct 12" Celestion units crop up on eBay regularly, so it's not the end of the world!
I must say, I've never heard of anybody blowing one of these. They can take a lot of stick.

I'd try the woofer in the working cabinet, that should tell you if it's faulty.
Thanks all.
Sorted now and sounding great.
One of the internal wires from the x-over to the bass unit needed re-soldering...which I (amazingly) managed.
Cheers

At least it was something straightforward and not a blown driver. Good for another forty years now :)

Wiped brow and gasp of relief I'd imagine! :D
Broken connections are quite common in speakers. Years of wires being vibrated around by sound waves I expect.
