Asynch 1 and iPad 3? - Yes!

Here's a new one for you that even Stan didn't know.

The Asynch 1 works with the iPad 3 via a standard "camera kit" (multi pin - USB) - well mine does anyway.

I just hooked it up as per photo and tunes began to play :)

SQ is very good - significantly better than my previous iPad "streaming" via Bluetooth to Chord Gem DAC.

The HiFace 2 did not do this.


Does not work with my iPods.

That's a great discovery. I can see quite a few application where such a solution would come in handy. One of them is a more advanced replacement for the SB Touch.

Just a quick note to say that it seems to be best to power the iPad off then connect the camera kit/Asynch 1 and power on. When finished with the tunes power the iPad off before unplugging the Asynch 1. I have found that if you just pull the Asynch 1 with the iPad powered up and running when you next connect to your computer/iTunes it is not recognised and you have to do a hard reset. Otherwise all is working and sounding fine. The only slight downside I can foresee is that the iPad is not being charged while playing so I don't know how long it will run for on a 100% charge - guess I'll find out.

I have also run the Asynch 1 very briefly from my wife's Sony Vaio (VISTA). Installed the drivers from Stan's website - rebooted and the Asynch was recognised and automatically became the default sound output. Sounds super - can't directly compare between iPad and Vaio but from brief listening to different tunes (my wife has strange tastes) I would say they are the same. When the Asynch 1 is turned off/unplugged then the internal speakers are auto switched in so all seems to work as per spec.

I can't run the Asynch 1 from my MacBook as it's pure USB 3 so thought I'd compare the SQ between the MacBook going direct into the USB input on the Caiman 2 and the iPad + Asynch 1 going into the S/PDIF input.

I used the USB cable Stan sent me with the Asynch and a Belkin Pro with the MacBook.

The new OEM Apple camera kit arrived so have been using that and can confirm it works perfectly. You'll get the odd error message like this accessory uses to much power or is not compatible but so far battery drain does not seem excessive. Awaiting a USB - 2.1 mm plug DC cable so I can connect my 5v 10000 mAh Anker battery to the Asynch to see if that removes the "insufficient power" warning and to see if the iPod will drive it. Now that would be something.

Listened to both headphone and speakers
Hooked up the 2 units and selected exactly the same track and just switched back and forth between inputs over a few tracks/albums.

Sounds exactly the same to me. I am only using iTunes with Apple lossless files so can't speak for higher resolution files but for the system I use routinely there is no difference.
