Hello from Hertfordshire

Hi,

My name is Simon I live in the middle of Herfordshire. I've looked in on a few interesting AoS threads over the last few months and felt it was time to actually sign up.

My interest in HiFi was formed at an early age - my Dad used to be a HiFi salesman at KJ LeisureSound (initially in Watford before he moved to the london branch). I guess they're the company that became KJ WestOne. I have my dad to blame for an early interest in music, for inadvertently getting me into Kraftwerk, for a lovely old pair of Audiomaster MLS5 speakers (I think that's what they are - anyone have any info on them please?), and an expensive HiFi habit ;)

I listen to a lot of music, including techno, dubstep, ambient, house, jazz, dub. I'm not big on rock and pop, with a few exceptions like Hendrix. I'm reasonably open-minded and will give any type of music a try. Well that's what I like to think, rather than admit that I'm probably a bit set in my ways and keeping ordering stuff off of Boomkat and Juno ;-) I love the music, HiFi is a great way to get close to it at home for me.

Er, I am a bit of a lurker trying to break the habit, so this is probably one of my longest posts on a forum.

I am very interested in getting my hands on one of Stan Beresford's Caiman DACs, as my brother has a 7510 which sounds great.

I'm mostly very pleased with the sound of my system, though my poor old speakers are rather rolled off at the top end. Can't afford to replace them for a while, as the DAC is new (as in new second-hand) and that cleaned me out.

I like photos too! :) I've just taken a couple of shots and will put them on the gallery shortly.

Those Anthony Gallo speakers are a thing of beauty!

You must be very pleased with that setup. I would probably cry if I heard it and then never be able to listen to mine again ;-)

Who was your Dad, I should know him (PM me if you like) as I was at Watford and then Wigmore St from 1974 until 1982 and knew most of the other staff in the other shops... (good grief, had I "got cracking" back then I could have a 30+ year old offspring...............:scratch:).

Audiomaster made three MLS models amongst others - a small MLS1 (balanced like the LS3/5A), a wider MLS2 with 8" Audax bass unit I think and a BC1 Spendor-esque sized MLS4 (2 cubic foot approx box) with Audax 8" bass and their popular tweeter IIRC. Complex crossovers (which put the designer Robin Marshall off for life) but a good, smooth sound in the "BBC" mold.

The key for us impoverished folks is to use cheap old gear and match it well to get a great, giant killing sound quality for peanuts.

I teased another forum-member when he had the Gallo's for their "pretend-fi" looks and tiny bass cabs :D. He rated them though too :)

Dave are we going to fall out again ? ;):lol::lol::lol::steam: If you have heard them then fair enough, you are entitled to say you don't like them or you think they are over priced (obviously not the case as Gallo lost money on these, and the new version, now priced correctly cost twice as much) if not then silence is the best policy. I offer no comments on things I have not heard.

I said I teased him about them (he may be along in a minute to comment - eh BM???). I'm sure they're great. A shame the "new" version is around twice the price I understand. Don't take me so seriously Neil, I don't :)

I've also twigged who the OP is the son of (he was around 14 years older than me, HiFi dave - i.e. your generation :lol:) so I don't feel quite so bad. I think I still have a r-to-r tape he did as a dem tape - Handel's Organ Concerto (no sniggering at the back there).

By all accounts Neil's system sounds superb, Gallos included, as was reported by Steve (Aquapiranha) when he visited, who certainly knows a good sound when he hears it...

From his writings on the forum it's obvious to me that Neil possesses a very good pair of ears. I have never heard the Gallos, but if Neil uses and rates them, that's a good enough indicator of quality for me :)

My Dad is Mike Pascoe - I'm pretty sure you'll know him if you were at KJs between 74-82. I remember going to Wigmore street with him on a sunday when I was a kid to switch the alarms off. I also remember that the toilet by the stock room said "To let" on the door where somebody had scrubbed the "i" out. Shame my knowledge about the great kit that was in there is non-existent ...

Thanks very much for the info - this MLS has what appear to be two drivers; my Dad tells me one of them is actually a passive radiator; I haven't pulled it apart myself ;) I'd definitely agree that it's a smooth sound.

And yes the name Robin Marshall rings a bell - I vaguely remember my Dad going to his wedding - somewhere near Windsor?

oh fugg.............

I was right - I met him once again many years after IIRC. The alarms did go off very regularly and it was always the support keyholders who had to go to turn them off.... Some years ago, when I returned to KJ for a few months before decamping to Northampton, the Wigmore St premises retained its frontage, but the entire building behind was being either demolished and/or re-built as I recall - a common thing in that part of the West End..

I miss those times, thirty years ago and the old saying about knowing then what I know now definitely applies.

One little story that Neil may have sympathy with ;) - on Christmas Eve, we didn't always close too early, but brought food and drinks in. On this occasion, a client was desperate to have his Thorens 160/Hadcock/Entre set up to take home for the holidays and so I stayed down in the capacious basement workshop setting it up. I finally finished it and had it re-packed by five pm as I recall. The client was thrilled, yet by then, all the mince pies and drinkies had gone :(

Simon, please give my best to your Dad. Does he still have a decent sound system? Perhaps your Dad, via yourself, can try to persuade Marco that Crown D-60's aren't all that bad, despite being tightly VI limited for the 'pro market :)


P.S. Neil, if it's any consolation to you, the Gallo is one speaker I really would like to get a listen to, as it's so different and genuinely "unconventional" in its approach to reproducing music in the home. I seriously wouldn't ever slag it off without good reason and I was jokingly "peeved" with BM for going on about TD on LP all the time, hence my teasing him at the time. This is ages ago now and I don't even know if he still has them, to be honest.

I will certainly pass on your regards thanks. If I remember correctly, he currently has a Meridian CD and DAC, with a passive pre in to a Meridian power amp driving a pair of Rogers LS35/a.

But _no_ vinyl! :doh: He really regrets selling his deck and all of his vinyl quite a few years ago. I know I would!

I would also really like to hear the Gallo speakers for myself. They'd certainly be on my shortlist to audition. I really have to focus on actually saving for the speakers for a while now, but I can dream ... :)
