This show I digitised at home with my main Art Audio system. For the future I have a 750d ready to go on an ex-BBC Garrard 401 I have a custom valve phono stage being made with switchable RIAA EQ, as this will be applied in VinylStudio as a lot of recordings back in the day used different curves, or none st all. The main cart will be the Denon 103 and a Shure M75 with a 78 stylus will be used for those.

Rich, glad you liked it ;)

Hi Paul. Will play when I'm back.

Incidentally, re my recent post about the band Brim, the smell was unbearable.

Glad to see Mannish Boy from Hard Again. A killer track and worth the price of the album alone.

Note the Robert Johnson album in the photo. I've been listening to the Clapton / Me and Mr Johnson quite a lot recently, you could do worse than spin a few tracks from that.

Hi Mark, if you go to pipelineradio.net there is a listen to Tunein button, if you do that you have to wait for it to come round on the streamer, or there is a podcast selector on the home page. Alternatively, go to http://tommackenzie.podomatic.com (http://tommackenzie.podomatic.com) and that is the Pipeline Radio Podomatic feed and you can get it streamed or download it there.

I don't use a squeezebox so I'm not sure but the tune in link for the "live" stream of the station is

http://tunein.com/radio/Pipeline-Radio-International-s210281/

the podcast player is

http://pipelineradio.net/JavaPlayers/SSPlay.htm and select the show you want to play

And the playable/downloadable Podomatic player is at

http://tommackenzie.podomatic.com/entry/2014-08-16T02_00_00-07_00

Chris, If one of these works with the Squeezebox, please let me know

'Fraid not Marco, got the arm and the cart and they work well but the SP10 has "issues". This edition things are still on the Art Audio. The most likely scenario at the moment is that I will go for a 1210/Jelco/103, into a Denon SUT this will go into a Sony broadcast mixer which has an MM input. I am looking at a Denon broadcast CD and have a Denon pro cassette deck then the mixer into a Focusrite Sapphire Pro24 and intonthe Mac.

PaulStewart
30-08-2014, 02:25
Yes, including the first record played at 78 on the Art Audio composer at 78rpm. Tom brought the new phase 2 power supply over to me and I had a 78 of a tex mex track from the 80s. Sadly some klutz had played it with a 78 stylus, despite it being stereo micro groove so it comes over a bit distorted, but it's a great track and a bit of a laugh.

Hi Doc,

Noticed a bit of a rock flavour to the latest show which I again enjoyed. I think some Gov't Mule may be a good call on the request front, Thorazine Shuffle and Brand New Angel are particular suggestions of mine.

Also any of Warren Hayes solo material - Soulshine for example.

If you go to the Podomatic on iTunes you can subscribe and download so you can keep the shows as long as you like. For licensing reasons, Cellar Club on demand will have to be streaming over a commercial service with a PRS agreement, maybe Sound Cloud, still working on it but, close to a solution I think :)

He was the epitome of the dreadfully poor sharecropper that taught himself to play music on any old excuse for a guitar. He was very popular for a time in the 60's when I was growing up. His guitar work sounds very simple but it ain't. And pure child-like voice. A very decent mam that lived in a shack all his life and worked til he bled....don't make em like that now Paul!
Thanks for playing them.

I wish I had the triple CD on vinyl, I had "Today" years ago but it went missing :steam: After the complete studio rebuild, I'm pleased with the sound. The ex BBC Denon Broadcast CD sounds really good to my ears and the vinyl is now from an M75ED, Origin Live Silver, Technics SL150 system, I will change the OL for a more robust broadcast style arm and probably a more broadcast orientated cartridge, like the Denon 103. This will make all the front ends Denon broadcast kit and I would hope give consistent sound qaulity. For those interested, the Stephen Dale Petit, Lightnin' Hopkins and Otis Spann tracks are from vinyl :)

Hi Marco,

Techy yes, 103 not yet. Our Sony MX-290 broadcast mixer does not have MC only MM inputs. NHK's preferred solution for the 103 into these, the JVC or the Soundcraft mixers they use is the T10, the Sony version though I'm pretty sure the Ortofon is the same just rebadged as Sony. So what you will hear is the other NHK favourite, the Shure M75 ED this has a NOS stylus and it's in an OL Silver arm. The Jelco will follow shortly, though I might import a Piezo broadcast arm, there are a couple available in Australia at the 'mo.

The tracks to listen out for are George Thorogood, Bad to the bone, Otis Spann Worried Man Blues, The Howlin Wolf off of American Folk Blues, John Lee Hooker Tupelo and Mungo Jerry, I just want to make love to you. All great tracks, the Mungo Jerry is from a disc I got new in 1970. None of the vinyl has been declicked, Just cleaned on my RCM.

PaulStewart

I Will put a track list up later, If I get a chance. The fundemental thing is that everything is now analog up to the Mac even the CD, which is an ex BBC Denon broadcast unit plays analog to the mixer via balanced outputs. The whole lot goes into a state of the art Focusrite Saffire A to D converter, into a recording program called Reaper. This is sampled at 96/24 and the output is rendered at the same quality, but as MP3 for the podcast.

Interesting stuff, mate. I think the introduction of the Techy has helped. Vinyl replay now sounds more ‘secure’ and stable. Did you manage to fit an MN bearing? The Shure M75 also seems to have ‘fleshed out’ the sound and added body and texture, as I found it a little brittle and lightweight before.

Have you also reduced the output levels slightly? Some tracks used to over-modulate before, especially the compressed digital stuff. Everything sounds smoother and more controlled now :)

Looking forward to hearing what the 103/Jelco (or Piezo) does!

Yep, Bad to the Bone was the opener, The problem with the Vinyl before was that everything was going to Vinyl Studio on the Mac at home via the excressant analog input of the Mac Mini. Now it's good quality analog to the A to D then Firewire into the Mac. Also, the Aiffs, Wavs and MP3s were copied and pasted into the recording, so the levels were a bit flaky now most of it goes through the analog stage and is more controlled. Also, when I do the final render and mixdown, the whole lot goes through a stereo "buss" compressor, which though it's in software is set to emulate a Fairchild broadcast compressor.... well it seems to work

Well, I can clearly hear the difference, Paul, and that’s simply by listening to it through the speakers on my Mac Pro… There’s most definitely a significant improvement in SQ (less ’shouty’ and tinny), and now I know why: you’ve reduced the amount of digital processes in the sound reproduction chain! ;)

Also, as I mentioned earlier (before you told me it was vinyl, played on the Techy), that the first track sounded superb… I guess the old lugs are still up to the job! :eyebrows:

Marco.

I've just found time to put it on Paul. Great opener. G T is a great performer. Even on the tablet it sounds better!

The levels are much better and consistently even.

Mike Bloomfied, from a really obscure recording I picked up, BTW a former BBC floor manager, who worked in music studios for the beeb has offered to sell me his entire blues and rock collection. I was a little reluctant, the conversation went...... Him "Would you like to buy my recor" Me "Yes" ;)

Hi Rich,

Well, there's bad news and there's some really stunningly good news! A number of us have pulled out of the original station, not least of all, because there seemed to be a very large question mark over the legality of its operations. and whether it was the right place to be. However, the Cellar Club is still very definitely happening and it gives me a huge amount of pleasure to announce that More Music Radio will be launching on Sunday via the Mixcloud server, where we can be assured that PRS and PPL are being paid, so no musicians will be ripped off in the making of some really great radio shows.

Not only will your favourite Blues show be on the MixCloud server, there will be more including a gig guide, features and reviews at moremusicradio.uk (http://moremusicradio.uk) Other shows are Michael Linney with Hedonist Jazz, (Michael already has 25,000 listeners on Mixcloud but has decided to come with us and bring them all to the party), Carl Kingston with his eclectic mix of music and Jim Lawson, the Ancient One, is bringing one of the best prog rock programmes I have heard. There's a MOBO show and others in development, so I'm hoping everybody on AOS will come and check us out. This is the most excited I have been about a new musical project for years and as I am in charge, I can keep the quality to the standards I expect, which is great. Just follow the link and you'll find the shows and please, I hope everybody lets us have feedback on them.

Regards to all,

PaulStewart

Real sad news about Ian McLagan of Small Faces And The Faces fame. One of the finest and most inflluential players of the 60s rock generation. He guested on many great albums since then too, including the Stones Some Girls. Mac was also one of the nicest blokes to have a drink with I ever met. Also this week, we lost Bobby Keys another Stones collaborator and a great saxophonist. Tributes in Sundays Cellar club.
