Same sort of set up as before, but this time using my Quad 306.
This is the line up;
Dual 505 TT with Shure M70B cart, not the best source by any means,
Firebottle Plus valve phono stage,
A box with a pot in it, it's a TOCOS COSMOS potentiometer, I've heard good things about it, then out to
Quad 306 power amp, finally
B&W 603 S2 floorstanders.

Listening to Gerry Rafferty City to City, the particular favourite track being 'Whatever's written in your heart'.

Was sitting thinking this isn't doing it for me, Gerry Rafferty's voice sounds out of balance, sort of, not 'nasal' but too mid bass heavy, difficult to describe.
Was prompted to go back to the set-up we tried a few days ago so I put the new OTL in place of the 306.

Well......... it absolutely and comprehensively out classed the 306, and I thought the 306 was a good amplifier.
So much more coherence to the soundstage, definitely letting the passion of the performance come through.

Just goes to show, you need to hear the particular combinations.

I do love my valves for what they can achieve, had you guessed :rolleyes:

Yes it is Ali.
For info it is based on the Tim Mellow circuit but.......

I'm using different valves types for all 3 stages, I've added some modifications to keep the dynamic balance on the driver stage, equalise the voltage across both driver valves, provide a CCS for the input stage, and fitted a delay on timer with additional monitoring for loudspeaker protection.

Also it's wired so that one or two output valves can be used, giving 10W or 25W respectively per channel. All good stuff.
