The whole thing looks a bit daft. No deal for Singapore, but Angola, North Korea, Russia, Italy etc ok?? This baby will just disappear in the post. Nobody spends 10% of this on a car without a test drive so who is going to make that trip just to check it out. Unless you have an audiophile friend in Florida (yeah right) it can only realistically be sold to someone local. And the non-refundable deposit of $3,000 : What the hell is that?! A couple of hundred bucks for using up time with a failed sale is all that is required surely. Oh and whaddaya know! some references. For Pete's sake. All this ad is missing is a claim that is has been blessed by the pope.

I really don't like the way it looks at all - it's got a far too 'cobbled together as you go along' style that chucking some gold plate at does nothing to hide. Having said that, it is a genuine bit of engineering and has been around a long time.

Uk hifi is cheap. I presume this is from usa. They do lots of silly priced stuff. Would go well with my 1,000,000 euro speakers from Kharma in Breda, Holland.

As has been politely pointed-out, the Walker is a famous high-end deck. Why people should be proud of knowing nothing about it is a bit puzzling..
It has a sophisticated air bearing platter and a good air bearing arm. I've heard one, and it does sound very fine indeed. Not to my taste, it does look like a kit of parts piled together, but some people have the money, like the sound, and are prepared to rise above the common-place.
What exactly is so wrong in that? No-one has to buy it, those that do are at least showing some commitment and the money goes into the audio business.
Whether they are any more stupid/greedy/ naive than the rest of us...who can say. Somehow, I rather doubt it. I drive a Toyota, but that doesn't make me want to dismiss people willing and able to buy supercars.
And if some of you do get the chance to hear such high-end decks (especially a Rockport Sirius) you might get your preconceptions challenged. And that has to be good, doesn't it?

I'm going to have to agree with you (regardless of whether I'm a Technics fanboy or not (which I am)). The Walker is a serious bit of kit. "Air-everything."

struth

Not doubting the fact that is is a fab piece of kit, but the price is silly money, and nowhere near going to produce a cost effective upgrade, unless they have found a way to re cut vinyl.

"Cost effective" is a personal perspective though. If it's even a smidge better than the next level down there's someone who will buy it on that basis. Of course, there's also the "pride of ownership" types, but they probably wouldn't worry about things like speaker placement, so it'd sound like ass.

Incidentally, I think if you buy one of those new (which if you can afford the "used" price from that seller, I don't see the point of buying used), Mr. Walker himself and a minion come and set the thing up for you.

Will be a load of hassle by whoever has it: fretting about whether it is set up properly, etc.,etc. Just because it is expensive does not make it good. It's just completely OTT imo. And it's belt drive!

Just so I understand - is the purpose of this thread just to bitch about stuff we can't afford?

If you think you know about turntables you should have encountered this one a long, long time ago. In it's way it genuinely is an all out attempt to address all the engineering challenges that confront record playback.

It seems many here make comments while not really having heard what a High End turntable is capable off, can I afford the Walker no sadly I cant it is way out of my price point. But am I happy it exists and makes the very few who can afford it happy yes yes is the answer. The walker has been the passion of its creator Lloyd Walker since the early nineties and has been perfecting it ever since, for me it is the greatest turntable one can currently buy it Just makes music. Come on guys this is a air bearing, air suspension turntable with an air bearing arm. All this costs serious money to produce and even though the market for such a beast is tiny the fact is that it exists and is a labor of love not some noisy idler drive turntable that just simply sounds crude. I speak from experience and even though I could never justify one and to be honest not sure if I really want one with all those hoses and noisy pumps etc but for sure it is the greatest turntable still in production and that says a lot. I know someone who owns one and have listened to his in a very expensive system, I went away smiling thinking it is so good that such a product does exist not thinking my much much cheaper 20 year old Basis Ovation turntable is superior who would I be trying to fool?. Do I enjoy my current turntable yes I do very much so, it does what I want it is neat no hassle has a great suspension works every day but there are better decks out there and we should be thankful that brave individuals like Mr Walker are still interested in perfecting this dying art.

Some folks will buy a Motorsport BMW for the performance and handling, and some will buy it because their tail-feathers aren't bright enough by themselves. Then some people will always assume the driver of an M-car is in the latter category.

And some people will dismiss belt drive the same way DD or idler is/was dismissed by the belt-drive fans. People who bang on about the drives tend to disregard the implementation. Their loss.

I'd love to just have the opportunity to see a Proscenium, let alone hear one fired in anger. I don't NEED one, any more than I need a Bugatti Veyron, neither of which I could afford anyway.

Well so does the natty little Technics SL6 I have here. And so did the Saisho music centre my parents had. But you won't want to swap them for your decks. Price is totally relative and totally irrelevant. My Techie and cart together cost £800. Some people I know think that is an insane amount of money to spend in order to spin a piece of vinyl. If I have £10 million in the bank what is £100K on a TT? Let's face it if I like it and I want it then I am going to buy it. And yes there are starving children in the world blah blah but as a multi-millionaire I am probably doing my bit for them as well.

For me it's not really how it sounds nor am I envious of the cost at all or the fact that I will never afford one. Like I said if you can afford it and it's your thang then knock yourself out. For me it has gold coloured bits.....I hate gold coloured things....especially gold...bleargh!

I've been to a few....erm Hi End Evenings and after a fashion I may as well be listening to QVC or Ideal World for the amount of utter gash spouted.

It was the SP02 which used a 48 pole motor as opposed to 12 on the SP10

Speaking of which, this looks very interesting http://www.flokason.ch/fs_directdrive.html

About three grand in English money. Not cheap but I suppose could be a starting point of a self-build super deck.

Barry it's most likly an Ortofon with slots for all Oertofon/EMT/ESL configurations where the connector can be rotated to suit as it seems to accomodate both the SPU and an EMT TSD12.

Not Jealous as I have lots of quality vintage hifi dating from the 20's on. What I do like to see is this quality ancient equipment saved and used which this guy certainly does and most of what he has would easilly better 95%+ of hifi available today.

Decor is quirky (as is often the case with an eastern take on european period style) but I have no idea what the inside of a brothel looks like so I'll have to take the others word for it :eyebrows: I'm more interested in the equipment and the increasing ammount of additional period brochures and specs that are appearing on the site.

PS Just noticed the owner does seem to have a penchant for reclining nudes

It's the EMT TSD12 I mentioned previously. First produced in 1961 http://www.cricket-record.jp/product/626 which evolved in 1965 into the TSD15.

Both were afaik EMT specified versions of the SPU without the plastic body (nude) in EMT specified headshell that were obviously based on the Ortofon AB shell. These were supplied with the EMT Ortofon RMA 297 tonearm before EMT manufactured their own tonearms and cartridges.

I've also seen early Ortofon OFS25 & OFS65 cartridges with both Ortofon and EMT marked on them.
