View Full Version : ASYNCH 5V supply

Just a quick sanity check. Is the 2.1mm 5V socket center pin +Ve ?

I knocked up a 12V battery with a 5V regulator (TS2940CZ CO 5V 1A) over the weekend to try it out, but got diddly squat out of it  The regulator is giving 4.97V, I would have though that would be ok.

The LED was dimmer when switched to the external supply.

I'm suspecting finger trouble ... hence my question about the center pin.

Stevie , I bought a 5v 1A PSU for use with the Asynch-1 . 2.1mm plug and centre pin +ve and it works perfectly . I have to say though that I prefer using the ASYNCH-1 powered from the USB . Stans implementation of the USB in the ASYNCH-1 appears to be excellent .
Be interesting to see how it fares with the battery power .

You have to flick the on/off switch "the other way round" when using an external PSU. But as Brian mentioned, it ain't really worth the hassle in this case.

Just waiting for a USB-A to 2.1 DC barrel plug lead to try powering the ASYNCH-1 from the 5v auxiliary power output on my Ankaka LiPo battery.

Hi Brian,

thanks for the reply.

I thought I would give it a whirl and see what battery is like regarding the sound quality. I had the battery knocking around, it use to be used to run one of Stan's DACs from way back. So it was just a case of buying a regulator chip and lashing it together.

Probably the battery needs a decent charge . But I thought I would check to make sure I hadn't cocked up the wiring.

I have to say, the more I listen, the more impressed I get with this ASYNCH.

Thanks Stan

Yeah, probably right about the hassle but I thought I'd give it a go ... :)

Aye it's an excellent little converter Stevie . Please keep us posted on your experience of powering the Asynch-1 via battery :)

I am coming to the conclusion that it has a substantially wider soundstage for some reason. IE, I get the music in a wider area than the last ones I used.

I run a v-link mk1 do you guys reckon it would improve on that? More importantly I am a self confessed computer daftee, is it easy enough to set up?

Tony,
having owned both Vlinks and heard Stans new USB box, I can say its better than them both, even the Vlink 192.

Will be a lot better than your Mk1.
No brainer buddy - and its daftee proof!

Tony, I had a similar problem with the vista driver and mine.....my pc was determined to ignore the driver file. had to go to the driver info in system and actually introduce the 2 of them  ...still once I did that it was plain sailing....worth persevering mate.

Nothing to do with this really. Just been trying to install a WiFi dongle and it's driving me nuts as the driver won't install. I have three new dongles all doing the same on W7. Tried (supposedly correct) driver downloads from various sites. No joy!

After you have installed the driver software, reboot the machine. Once the PC has rebooted, just sit quiet and wait a few minutes for Windows to find the new device and install the the drivers. Once it has done that, a balloon will appear in the right hand bottom corner of your screen to say that the drivers for the newly found device have been successfully installed.
If you just install the driver software and then reboot the PC to use the ASYNCH-1 right away, you probably won't find the ASYNCH-1 operating, because Windows is still busy registering it. You have to wait a minute or two initially before looking in the sound panel for the new device.

Totally understand the frustration. You can go nuts when a driver doesn't want to install. Tell me about it, I've upgraded the Win 7 laptop (originally being used for the ASYNCH) to Win 8 - that gone fine , but Win 8 to 8.1 is making me blow a gasket :steam:, however that's another story .... back on topic

I found for Win 7 & Win 8.1 (on the other laptop), when the driver was installing it would ask for the USB device (ASYNCH) to be connected and then it went off on its merry way installing the driver. As Stan's says - let Windows have time for it to register the driver, reboot and you should be able to see it in the sound panel as per his instructions.

BTW on the original 5V battery issue that I started this thread with : I found that both batteries were knackered i.e. they wouldn't charge, so endeth that experiment for now  I come back to that at a later date.

Many thanks for the help and advice. I just aint cut out for computer stuff.....

So quite analogue sound like a turntable then? :)

It sounds like a buffering/latency problem to me Tony.
Still using Itunes?

Me neither.
Tried 5v wall wart and even ordered a 2.1 mm dc cable for my high capacity Anker battery - nada.
Stan tells me there is no advantage using a 5V DC supply from a SQ point of view but I wanted to experiment to see if with an external power supply it would run my iPod as it does the iPad but pretty much given up on the idea now

I connected my aqvox linear psu to it via the usb and it works a treat. It has made it much better; something I did not expect. Have not tried a psu using the 3.5mm socket though.. Have to say also that it sounds better on Foobar than JRiver.

i have a usb power injector cable just need to get hold of a usb A to B adapter.
will give that a go.
but i cant understand why the psu does not work.

cheers guys

yes mate.
in the down position the led goes dim and the message "usb device not recognized" appears.

Same here trying to power from the 5v socket using the 5v USB auxiliary port on my Ankaka lipo battery. Stan's not sure what the problem is.

The Ankaka will power the ASYNCH-1 via a USB power injection cable and I have been running like this for about a week. I've now reverted to bus power ( eg. Just powering the ASYNCH-1 from the computer's USB port) and can't hear any difference from powering with the Ankaka and the injector cable, so am happy to abandon any plans to power via the 5v DC socket.

I felt the aqvox psu gave me a decent diiference, but as my pc aint up to much these days that may be the reason, I dont know. I am certainly considering pulling it from the classifieds and using it with this.

In the 'up' position, the power is still being drawn from the computer's USB port rather than the 5v socket - so no point in trying external power unless you put the switch in the 'down' position.

i wonder when toggle is in down position for external whether the unit is successfully disconnecting the bus supply voltage, maybe there is a conflict here?

once i get an a/b usb adapter i will give it a go, if i hear no difference it will be confined to my drawer and i will stick with bus power.

Will be great to know if there's any difference in the sound - even if it's small. Could be another bargain :champagne:

i had problems with the hiface2 not being recognized on boot-up. basically i would have a red cross over the speaker logo on the right hand side of the taskbar on w7.
i would then have to un-plug and re-plug the hiface2 for it to be recognized and the cross to disappear.
even when things worked properly the red cross would not disappear for at least 20 seconds.

this was the same when i first connected the Asynch1. the red cross disappeared after around 20 seconds.

since adding the external psu and injector cable, i see no red cross on boot-up, not even for a second.
i cannot say there is any improvement on sound quality.
but, i seem to think the external psu may have cured a problem with my 5v supply on usb . so i intend to keep using it.

ASYNCH is excellent as it is, so what's the overall improvement you found: better sound stage - depth and width, small nuances in the music being revealed?

Could be worth a punt :eyebrows: :hmm:
